Israel's Solar Eclipse

A 82% solar eclipse enveloped Israel in sudden darkness Wednesday. The eclipse began at 11:37 AM, peaked at 12:58, and lasted until 2:13 PM.

As Israel digested the results of Tuesday's election, the sky went dark, the sun was slowly blocked out, temperatures dropped and animals howled, barked and crowed across the Land of Israel. (from Arutz-Sheva)

At work, a bunch of us astronomy geeks went outside complete with a special sun-viewer to watch the eclipse. Besides the actual view of the sun and eclipse, it was very cool watching it get dark outside. See Gemara Sukka 29B...its metaphysically good for the Jewish people, (GH: That's not physics, it's metaphysics)

Wherever I am, my blog turns towards Eretz Yisrael

  1. That second paragraph is insanely melodramatic. (The sun stopped/ the earth was destroyed/ we faced total destruction, etc) But that's a beautiful picture.

  2. Can you go further into how it is metaphysically good for us?

  3. I remember being in my car during an eclipse once, except at the time I didn't know there was going to be one.

It got very dark all of the sudden and cars were pulling over to the side of the road and drivers were getting out to look up at the sky.

It was eerie, like the end of the world.

But then, it got brighter again.

  4. interesting.
but somewhere else in the world there was a full eclipse! they showed it on the news the other day.
i guess it's good that such an event is metaphysically good for the jews, especially at a time like this.
