Jack: We'll see what we can dredge up for you. Arabian or African?
Sarah: Yes, it's slightly queasy. And the smell aint that great either!
Ari; Of course! You'll get a very special discount if you mention me :)
TRW: probably... I wonder if the guy sitting down in the last 2 pictures is the mashgiach.
Bec: My pleasure! If you can't come to the Muqata for "the unexpected" -- then what's the point?! :)
Jenifer: Maybe there's a different shul which has the rest of the camel? (Like the museum in Rome of "body parts that fell off of statues")?
Both; Flemish sweet bread? I don't think the heads are for sale for eating...being left outside the way they are -- they are probably for stuffing and placing over the mantle on a fireplace.
Any chance you could bring me one of those camel heads next time you visit the UK? I don't actually want one, I just want to see if you can get it through airport security and customs...
Wow - that brought ewwy memories of when I lived in Nazareth Elite and my father and I would walk around the shuk in Nazareth. All that raw meat in the hot sun, with flies swarming around. I glad I never saw the cow's head, or else I think I would have become a life long vegan.
That cow-head reminds me of a wonderful Flemish recipe.
ReplyDeleteThere are, in farming communities from all over the world, recipes for dealing with both the gelatine content of such things, as well as the brains.
Some of the recipes are utterly delicious.
Prairie oysters, on the other hand......
And then there's pizzle. Which I believe only the Spanish eat. But I could be mistaken, as I have never looked much into that matter.
Yummy
ReplyDeleteDo you think they keep the cow's and the camels' heads separate for kashrus purposes?
ReplyDeletethank goodness you posted this. i was just remarking today that i needed to find a good place to purchase a cow's head....
ReplyDeletei cooked a tongue in honor of last week's parsha (see rashi or http://agmk.blogspot.com/2006/11/leshon-shabbat-u-lshon-hag-shabbat.html).
ReplyDeletei actually could not get a fresh one in the first store and i had to go to another to find one. next time i will just go strait to the shuk in hevron.
should i say that jameel of the muqata sent me?
even though i'm partial to a good barbecue that's just a bit off-putting!
ReplyDeleteI need a horse's head for the Godfather party.

bit whiffy in the shuk, eh?

Ew, Jack!!
ReplyDeleteThe heads are indeed for eating, they usually just spray the meat with insecticide to get rid of the flies and maggots.
