How Much Should You Spend on a Wedding?

This post begs the question of how much to spend on a wedding. It is a good question and one that is not always easily answered. Do you have a big affair with a lot of people or do you try to do something small and intimate.

The truth is that even the small affair can be costly, but then again there are ways to make it more affordable. What do you think?

Wherever I am, my blog turns towards Eretz Yisrael

  1. Someone made the comment a month or two ago that they would like to be rich enough that they can host modest simchas without people thinking that it is due to poverty.

  2. Loaded topic. I think the main problem is that of peer pressure, where people feel that if they make a less fancy wedding, oh, what will the neighbours think... It's an issue of education. I mean rabbis have to put out public statements saying that they ENCOURAGE people to have modest weddings. And of course lead by personal example.
Also, some "out of the box" thinking is needed. A wedding doesn't have to be in a hall!!! My relatives who're definitelly not rich merried off a few kids IN OPEN FIELDS!!! They only had to pay for the catering. Of course it's easier in Eretz Yisroel and in the summer, but that's just one example. And by the way those weddings were the happiest I've ever seen!

  4. ive been told that it ends up costing more to make a smaller wedding because you dont make enough in gifts to pay for it. a lot of the costs are similar regardless of the size...
    i know.. crazy logic.. but..

  6. I honestly think it's a very individual matter. People have different incomes, different expectations, different priorities. So, I think, whatever makes the individual couple happy is the right choice for them.
