Sunday's NYT magagine has something good about modern Orthodoxy, written by a graduate of one of the better MO day schools. As part of the larger discussion, he tells how his school handled the study of evolution (a rabbi gave a creationist introduction) and recounts some of the lectures he and his classmates were given about sex.
I expect those of you think MO is nothing but shortcuts and prikas ol will be unpleasently surprised.
I think that you missed the point of the article. It was by no means a ringing endorsement of MO. Noah says that his life choice (to marry a non-Jew) has made him persona non grata in the community, and then explained the background of why this would be particularly true in a MO community by giving some background about his education.
ReplyDeleteI also think you missed the point about the introduction that the rabbi gave--it was explicitly non-creationist, pro-evolution, although the rabbi expressed personal, emotional discomfort with the idea of evolution.

As I read it, the intro was creationist, or ID anyway, in that it said that God directed it.

I know. I don't think I said it endorsed MO, only that MO haters will be surprised to learn that MO schools aren't quite as wishy washy as they may imagine.
