Ani Iparon Redux; "I am a pencil"**

Thanks RafiG for the following anecdote (and hat-tip to DE for pointing it to me)

Standing for the Tzfira

I just heard (second-hand) this great Yom Ha'Zikaron anecdote about standing for the siren...

Introduction: the Hebrew word for siren is tzfira

This American seminary girl was returning to Israel from her Pesach trip home to the USA (visiting her family). She happened to return to Israel on the night of Yom Ha'Zikaron, though she knew nothing about that.

Anyway, so she is in the taxi on the way to Jerusalem from the airport. The taxi driver stops the taxi and says, "tzfira". The clock strikes 8 and the siren begins to wail. They stand outside of the taxi, and the sem girl starts shuckling and says the Bracha of "Al Sfiras Ha'Omer" and counts that days Omer.

After that she recounts how beautiful it is that in Israel, they sound a siren to announce the Sefira and everyone counts at the same time.
For information on the Ani Iparon -- "I'm a pencil" sem girl statement, see AirTime's post here.

  1. I don't know, her logic is good. After all there is a siren for lighting Shabbat candles.

  3. elchonon- sorry, the only korbanot brought during the omer are- the omer of barley! Jews brought the omer to the beit hamikdash to worship Hashem not baal and molech. But I guess pple who only believe in Chumra-ism and don't recognize a clear nes min hashamayim when it slaps them in the face are worshiping baal and molech, so it's not surprising that you would make that assumption. (Try saying this in the mirror a few times before you daven: "I worship Hashem, not the chumras of baal and molech")

Or did you assume that the Jordanians would have gladly allowed the Jewish people to establish the largest center of Torah in history just from the goodness of their hearts, just because we would say pretty please? Or that the Palestinians would have gladly cleared that nice plaza in front of the Kotel without Hashem's allowing us to conquer the old city in 67?

Yes, keep living in that charedi la la land where the size of your hat is more important than recognizing Hashem's actual greatness in the world.

First of all - where does this post say anything about yom haatzmaut pushing off sefira?

its a time of mourning and you guys all dance to music.

Did I write anything about dancing to music?

can I halachikaly get a haircut on yom atzamut ?

    Go ask your rav...

why arent you makriv karban yom atzamut (obviusly to baal and molech)

The korban hayom is the mangal we had during the day (once at bein haarbayim, and the other one at mincha gedola).

  8. elchonon -

I am told that those who shave on yom ha'atzmaut do so because they hold YH is not just Hallel, but is a full yom tov, and on yom tov there is no aveilus, which would allow one to shave and get haircuts.

  10. I wasent ranting just trying to be funny.. sheesh..

Abbi, I dont know what chareidi lala land you refer to.. but rafi and jameel can vouch that i'm as settler as they come.. I am a tziyoni in the non memlachti sense.. I do live in kiryat arba - chevron.

My prejudice against celebrating yom atzamut stem from the state that was created and by whom and what it represents.

Largest center of torah in history ? you mean the country that wants to persecute anyone doing kiruv work with those under 18?

I could go on but that isnt my point.

They say, a father will love his child through good and bad and is willing to overlook the bad..

Except this isnt his child.. its the milkman's spawn! the bastard offspring!
