You connect the dots.
1. Terror attack in Yeshiva Merkaz Harav -- who killed the terrorist? IDF officer on leave, David Shapira.
2. Bulldozer attack in Jaffa St, Jerusalem -- who killed the terrorist? IDF soldier on leave, "M" (he has requested that his name not be published). M is also the brother in law of David Shapira (listed above). Coincidence? Keep reading!
3. 21 days after the first bulldozer attack, there is a SECOND bulldozer attack in Jerusalem near the King David hotel. Who shoots the terrorist first? Civilian Grandfather Yakki Asa-el (also an IDF soldier in the reserves)
My good blogger friend, DoubleTapper just finished a conversation with the first bulldozer attack hero, "M" who was assigned to protect out settlement the past 2 weeks.
Guess who "M"s teacher was in high school?

Today's Hero, Yakki Asa-el.
What do they all have in common?
What do they all have in common?
- Law Abiding Citizens, licensed to carry weapons
- Active IDF soldiers or in the IDF reserves
- Nationalistic, Religiously-observant Jews
- Determination - belief in our purpose of living in Eretz Yisrael.
The media and others may try to defame nationalistic, religious Jews all they want.
Yet at the end of the day, these Jews have been the ones to end the terror attacks without hesitation.
Wherever I am, my blog turns towards Eretz Yisrael טובה הארץ מאד מאד
Yes. :)
ReplyDeleteI posted this well before you....
ReplyDelete(I don't understand what's good and/or Jewish about nationalism, but that's not the topic here.)
ReplyDeleteThe coincidence is amazing. It's a bit smaller than one would first think because the pool of possible "heros" doesn't include everybody in this small city. Also, may I mention "Jewish geography"? :-)
Huge fan of the right to bear arms especially concealed ones and I always use Israel of proof that it works.

You have to admit that it's not really great security policy to hope that there is coincidentally a determined national religeous Jew with a handgun in the area.
ReplyDeleteM- who, me? ;)
ReplyDeleteQuestion: I'm in Israel now. Why didn't I hear about the last two attacks you were referring to? Am I so caught up with personal issues to miss something so basic as that???
no such thing as coincidence.
ReplyDeleteSarah, of course there is such a thing as coincidence. (its actually a achlokes rishonim, and I am siding against you and with those who say coincidences happen.
ReplyDeleteJameel, The media and others may try to defame nationalistic, religious Jews all they want
I'm not aware of any media program to defame religious Jews. Let's not needlesly trutn ourselves into victims.
I do have a question, though. In the video of the first DB attack, the man you're calling M reached over or around armed policemen to shoot the terrorist. What do they police say about that? Why didn't they shoot themselves? Why did a civillian go around them? I know NYC != Jerusalem, but if the NYPD was trying to subdue a terrorist and a civillian went around them and shot him the civillian would be arrested. I am not saying that should have happened in J, but I'd like to know why it didn't. Can you shed light?
Thanks.
I found out about the incident this morning (evening your time). I blogged about it and linked your story in my post.
ReplyDeleteI am absolutely in favor of responsible civilians being armed. It seems they are the only ones who can be relied upon to protect and serve. . .
Hi DB! Thanks for dropping by...
ReplyDeleteI'm not aware of any media program to defame religious Jews. Let's not needlesly trutn ourselves into victims.
I can bring dozens of examples -- the media in Israel is self-admittedly biased. Will see what I can come up with.
Yet much more important is your next comment. I will post about it now.
Is that THE Dov Ber? Why doesn't he have a Blogger ID?
ReplyDeleteJameel, waiting for your next post, which seems to never have made it. But what DB doesn't seem to know is that not only did M "reach over or around," but he actually TOOK AWAY a security guards gun to shoot the terrorist.
Apparently, our own police & soldiers are so afraid of being jailed for "shooting too early" that they were afraid to shoot. Thank G-d that in all 3 incidents there were such unafraid MITNACHLIM who knew better! And I love that video, "Yaasher Koach, Yaki"!
I'd say "licensed to carry weapons" is key. That they are active soldiers means they know how to use them properly and handle themselves in that type of situation. That helps. They are also the type of people who would probably understand this essay.
ReplyDeleteI would openly carry, and would like to think I could conduct myself as well as these heroes. In the UK, however, we do not get the opportunity.
yitz...post is almost ready...been a bit busy today....
ReplyDeleteinteresting that Mr. Asa-el gets SO MUCH less press than M and Shapira. I didn't hear his name until reading it hear! I guess runner up is always a bummer (ayen erech Oren Smadja)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, Yakki is a bissel ach me-ametz of mine (adoptive brother). His father and mine went to high school and Bnei Akiva together in Hungary, and when I made Aliya in high school , my father introduced me to the Asa-els who made me feel very much at home and so I did:-). Over HS and Army, I must have spent dozens of Shabbatot at their apt in Katamon.
And heads up: see if the former Jpost Executive Editor talks about this in MiddleIsrael this week (hint: compare their last names..)
not to get an ayin hara, where did yakki learn?
ReplyDeleteseems we have some very frum erliche yidden, who understand pikuach nefes, hamatzel nefesh acat byisrael, lo taamod al dam reacha, and best the melamed bno umnut.

ReplyDeleteThese facts were all reported in a very pro-RZ article in Haaretz today

ReplyDeleteI'd be quite surprised if he didnt go to high school at Netiv Meir (back in the good old days) and hesder in Gush=Har Etzion.
In those day, until about 1997, 90% of the elite of the srugies went to Netiv Meir, so many grads are impressive. see a very abbreviated list at
http://he.wikipedia.decenturl.com/netiv-meir-hebrew-wiki
BH, many other schools have grads of NM leading them today, with the same values that you mention and hundreds more, so I'm optimistic
