Ahmadinejad the Jew?

Heard this tidbit tonight while enjoying a simchat beit ha'shoeva -- a small get-together with friends in their sukka, and then found my inbox inundated with email from people about the same story (thanks everyone for the info!)

The UK Daily Telegraph broke the story today:
A photograph of the Iranian president holding up his identity card during elections in March 2008 clearly shows his family has Jewish roots.

A close-up of the document reveals he was previously known as Sabourjian – a Jewish name meaning cloth weaver.

The short note scrawled on the card suggests his family changed its name to Ahmadinejad when they converted to embrace Islam after his birth.

The Sabourjians traditionally hail from Aradan, Mr Ahmadinejad's birthplace, and the name derives from "weaver of the Sabour", the name for the Jewish Tallit shawl in Persia. The name is even on the list of reserved names for Iranian Jews compiled by Iran's Ministry of the Interior.

Experts last night suggested Mr Ahmadinejad's track record for hate-filled attacks on Jews could be an overcompensation to hide his past.
There are many "overcompensation" type stories in the past; one that comes to mind is about the Arabs of Tzurif near Gush Etzion, who killed the "Lamed Heh" 35 Haganah soldiers to provided reinforcements to the besieged Gush Etzion communities in 1948. After killing the soldiers, the Tzurif Arabs mutilated the bodies of the soldiers so badly, it was impossible to identify them.

Some say that the hatred towards Jews harbored by Tzurif was an overcompensation for their Jewish roots, and they have to prove themselves as not being loyal. I have heard that on the old homes in Tzurif you can even see mezuza indentations.

So...is Ahmadinejad a Jew? Other than being an historical oddity, I don't find it of much relevance. He's a madman, leading a country threatening to destroy Israel.

  1. The UK Daily Telegraph broke the story today:

Actually, the Daily Telegraph did not break the story, nor was it broken today:

The story of Ahmadinejad's Jewish origins -- including the specifics involving his being from the Jewish Saburjian family from Aradan -- was first revealed some months ago, by Iranian blogger Dr. Mehdi Khazali.

In retribution for this, Khazali was arrested by the Iranian authorities. I don't know what happened to him in the end.

You can read all about this in this article from the Jerusalem Post, dated July 3.

The Telegraph's fraudulent attempt to pretend that they just now broke this story themselves is sheer chutzpa. This is yet another example of the mainstream media taking credit for a news story broken by a blogger -- a phenomenon that seems to be getting more and more common.

If you read the Telegraph article carefully, you'll notice that there is a brief mention of Khazali way down near the end. This is their attempt to cover themselves. But the article does not explain that the entire story was, in fact, shamelessly lifted from Khazali's blog.

  2. Lurker! You beat me to this. I read this a while ago. Ahmadiniejad even responded to the accusations a while ago too.

Jameel, shame on you for trusting the MSM.

    Chg Sameach.

  3. There are so many Muslims who hate us, they can't ALL have Jewish parents.

  4. I'm torn. On one hand, I want to adhere to principle, take the high road, and say that the fact that Immadinnerjacket was once Jewish is of no political consequence. It's something for the psychologists to mull over, but otherwise a footnote in the life of this mad man. On the other hand, I'm tempted to play into the idea of a mass Jewish conspiracy and try to convince the Iranian hardliners that he's actually a Jewish sleeper agent, and should be dealt with post haste.

  5. That he might have been born a Jew is interesting in hindsight but ultimately irrelevant. Ahmedinejad is a vicious anti-Semite who wants to complete the work the Nazis began.

That's all we need to know about Iran's madman.

  6. There was actually something about this in A7 in January.

If true, it just proves Yeshaya 49:17
