Swine Flu (oops, I meant, the H1N1 virus) is under attack in New York City. Targeting different groups, the NYC Health Department and the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg (predominantly Satmar Ultra orthodox community) present the following "wash your hands" poster -- in Yiddish -- to encourage cleaner, disinfected hands to prevent disease transmission, and better hygiene.
Its interesting that on this NYC Health poster, step 9 is "Say Asher Yatzer" -- the blessing made after going to the bathroom.
Update: #7 is "neigel vasser" as well (what a frum poster! If this won't get Mike Bloomerg re-elected, I don't know what will)

This is great!
ReplyDeletevery smart! because they know the typical behavior is ritual washing without soap, and that people would not substitute the hygienic for the ritual, and so they instruct how to do both.

In the target community for this poster it's not the "Swine Flu". It's "the flu that originated in Mexico" - much to the consternation of the Mexican government.
ReplyDeleteBut they seem to be machmir. After all, a cup isn't necessary for washing one's hands after using the bathroom, so the hygienic could very well replace the ritual.
ReplyDeleteMichael: some people wash "neigel vasser" before saying asher yatzar.
ReplyDeleteYes, but that is chumra, no? Not every washing needs a kli, or three times for that matter. Just sleeping and marital relations and, I think, entering a cemetery.
