Why do Palestinian men beat their wives?

by Lurker

Why, because of Israel, of course. (Duh.)

And by contrast, we can now understand why women are treated with such decency and respect throughout the rest of the Arab and Muslim world...

[Hat-tip: Jameel]

Update from Robert:

Gee, I must be an ignoramus. I thought those men watching their imams spouting off about Quran 4:34 had more of an influence. No doubt the PA-financed, rabid Leftist study examined this issue and found it irrelevant.

"Men have authority over women because Allah has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because Allah has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them. Then if they obey you, take no further action against them. Surely Allah is high, supreme." (Dawood's translation)

And here's a website that analyzes the verse and cites 6 different translations.

  2. My favorite of the six translations is the one that replaces "beat them" with "beat them (lightly)".

That one must be from the ArtScroll Koran. I imagine that it also has a note in the commentary, explaining that "The reason why God commands us to beat women is that women are on a higher spiritual level than men."

  3. Duh, Lurker, if Arab women are on such a high spiritual level, if the men didn't beat them, they would float away!

  4. Hey Lurker, you had better be careful. People might be calling Judaica stores right now for their copy of the Artscroll Koran because of irresponsible cooments like yours ;)

  5. This is the year 2010, not 210 right? And this is what passes for science?!!! You know what they say--if it smells like s--t and looks like s--t then it must be s--t, except of course to some so called researchers and their payers.

  6. That first comment is disgustingly misogynistic. I'm no longer reading your blog until you erase that comment.

-brings to mind the birchot hashachar morning tefilah "shelo asani isha"
--'because women are 'so much higher in spirituality and thus closer to Hashem, and don't need all these mitzvot shehazman graman, and blah, blah, etc.' (--le'havdil, of course).
