Eli Yishai has had the privilege of being marked by the Obama administration as an obstacle to peace. The Obama administration sent the message that they view Yishai, as Minister of the Interior, as being responsible for approval of the new construction of the non-controversial Ramat Shlomo project in Jerusalem (non-controversial, until Obama decided that more Jews in Jerusalem is a bad thing).
Surprisingly (at first glance), in very recent remarks, the Obama administration said that the obstacles to peace aren't Avigdor Lieberman, nor Eli Yishai, just the Likud party.
Pundits (besides Feiglin) mistakenly thought Obama meant Netanyahu. But they didn't understand that Obama is getting heavily involved in understanding the nitty-gritty of Israeli internal politics - and is intensely trying to meddle there.
Obama meant what was said. The Likud party, not Bibi.
As such, Bibi has been fighting his head off since them in trying to block the already delayed internal Likud elections - elections that will just confirm that Bibi is not taking the party where the party wants to go, and where the nation wants to go - just too close to where Obama wants us to go.
Already there are concerns that it will go so far as ballot boxes being corrupted to ensure a Bibi victory.
But this is a multi-front battle. And pressuring Bibi is only one tactic in Obama's arsenal. And unfortunately, but as expected, Bibi seems to be slowly caving in under the treats and pressures of the Obama administration.
As I mentioned, the Obama administration, after vitriolically attacking Eli Yishai, suddenly said that Yishai won't be an obstacle to peace. They believe that Eli Yishai is someone they can subvert to their side, for the right price.
And then yesterday, Eli Yishai received a personal invitation to visit the White House and meet with Obama - even Bibi hasn't gotten that, Bibi's had to go through the back doors and back rooms to get inside for meetings.
Eli Yishai has only one move to make here, if he is brave enough.
As disrespectful as it is, Eli Yishai needs to decline the invitation.
Eli Yishai needs to make it clear that Jerusalem will not be divided on his watch, and there is no point in even going to a meeting where the sole point is to discuss that very issue. Eli Yishai must not give even any semblance of legitimacy to the idea of even discussing this evil idea.
If Eli Yishai thinks he can go to the White House and leave personally untainted and Jerusalem undamaged, he is wrong.
Eli Yishai - do the right thing - decline the invitation (politely). If nothing else, perhaps Bibi will get the message that it is also OK to sometimes say "No".

GET A LIFE. SERIOUSLY.
ReplyDeleteIN A BLOG THAT HAS JOKED ABOUT SUCH LOVELY TOPICS AS A PROTESTOR/PALESTINIAN SYMPATHIZER WHO WAS RUN OVER BY A BULLDOZER-- AND PANCAKES-- AMONG OTHER CHOICE THINGS I'VE READ HERE (MUST I CONSULT YOUR ARCHIVES?), DO YOU SERIOUSLY EXPECT THIS TO BE A BIG DEAL?
NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT THE BUSH WHITE HOUSE WAS FILLED WITH SUCH LOVELY REPUBLICAN SEMITOPHILES (YES, SARCASM) YET YOU NEVER SAID A WORD FOR 8 YRS.
WE GET IT. YOU DON'T LIKE THE OBAMA TEAM. SLOW NEWS DAY? MAYBE TALK ABOUT PROTESTORS IN SILWAN INSTEAD OF TRYING TO CREATE A STORY WHERE THERE IS NONE.
I'd like to second what anono said. Go complain about a Rachel Corrie joke for once - or use your slanted, and biased take on the world to find something negative about a Republican - before you get all bent out of shape about a mild, little, insignificant invitation to a nobody minister.
ReplyDeleteOr better yet, go write another poem about how Obama gave away Jerusalem and conveniently forget for months to acknowledge that Jerusalem remains as it always was.
You just seconded yourself!
ReplyDeleteSLOW NEWS DAY DOVBEAR? Obama meddling in internal Israeli politics, and invites the Minister of the INTERIOR to the White House?!
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty unusual as far as I can see.
...a mild, little, insignificant invitation to a nobody minister...
ReplyDeleteI don't think that an invitation to the White House could be considered a "a mild, little, insignificant" thing. Just the opposite, in fact. And Yishai is not a nobody minister. As the head of Shas, he holds a lot of power.
Yishai should decline the invitation for the exact reasons that JoeSettler pointed out (but didn't connect to this point): a minister in a government should make it clear that he will not accept a red-carpet invitation after the prime minister of his government was treated in such a humiliating manner.
YONIR: HOW ABOUT THE HUMILIATING MANNER IN WHICH ISRAEL TREATED VP BIDEN WITH THE NEW SETTLEMENT IN EAST JERUSALEM?
ReplyDeleteJameel, I think you're expecting too much of Shas, a party that has shown over the last 17 years it can be bought for the right price.
ReplyDeleteI'm not holding my breath waiting for Eli Yishai to decline the invitation to the American "Hill Of Evil Counsel."
What new settlement? You mean the 20,000 person Chareidi neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo in what was no-mans land between 1948-1967?
ReplyDeleteGood point Yoni.
anon, you yelling just makes you sound bitter and stupid. And as a democrat who really doesn't like republicans, Obama's policies really disturb me. I didn't vote for him because his whole "hopenchange" was ridiculous because I don't always believe change is good. And I felt it was a naive and childish way of looking at the role of the president.
ReplyDeleteBut with regards to Israel, Obama has shown that he is a meddler. He thinks he knows what is best for a city in which he barely has a connection to. By putting himself in the midst of internal israeli affairs, it shows that its not that he wants peace in the area as much as to antagonize the Israeli people in order to placate the arab countries. Its an idiotic method of obtaining peace--make your allies crazy, and your enemies happy,

ReplyDeleteDB, you forgot to turn your CAPS LOCK key off again.
ReplyDelete(Yes, yes, I know -- you're a manager, so you have to.)
Rabbosai, could you all just shut up? Your various ideological positions do not improve upon repetition.
ReplyDeleteI like Obama. But, being a mean son of a bitch, I also appreciate saint pancake jokes.
[I'm not kidding: I seriously appreciate humour about the dumb-ass middle-class meddlesome cow getting flattened because her ISM buddies needed a martyr for their campaign of lies.]
But that aside, Bibi gets taken down a few notches, and Obama will loose interest when domestic election politics becomes a pressing concern. So, in the meantime, just stop yelling at each other like a bunch of angry schoolkids.
It's better that a president burn his fingers on the middle-east problem early in his first term. Gets it over with. Just like childhood illnesses.
Oh, and another note. The remarks about the holy blessed pancake were purely gratuitous. Meant, in fact, to offend whosoever chooses to be offended. My only regret is that her odious parents (particularly her loathesome mother) weren't flattend also.
ReplyDeleteBut it may yet happen. I certainly hope it does.
And, to conclude, I have no doubt whatsoever that she was a better pancake than person. I apporove of personal improvement. Hence I fervently and sincerely wish the same benefit upon her parents.
ReplyDeleteIt's very Christian of me, I know.
Oh.
Well.
Back of the hill--I LOL'ed at your last comment. And I feel absolutely terrible that I did.
ReplyDelete(approve of personal improvement! giggle!)
