Updates from Israel...

0. 4:05 PM Qassam rocket lands in Ashkelon's national park. The missile alert system "Tzeva Adom" wa not activated in Ashkelon...only in Sederot. No injuries reported.

1. 2:04 PM. Schools in Kiryat Shmona have been instructed by the IDF to open their bomb shelters. Kibbutz Avivim residents even were unofficially instructed to enter theirs based on intelligence reports of possible upcoming rocket attacks.

2. The Gay Parade is approaching in Jerusalem. Watch out for traffic jams, police violence, demonstrator violence, police motorcycles that smash everything in their way, police water canons that have destroyed homes (even homes that had nothing to do with the demonstrations)

3. The other evening was a mega cool "Occultation" (eclipse/alignment) of Venus by the moon, which was very visible here in Israel. I called my kids to make sure they looked up at the sky to see it, since it was definitely bracha-worthy. The best pics I found are these: (the bright, star-like object is Venus)

4. Fatah asks for more weapons. US and Israel think its a grand idea. Hamas anticipates "inheriting them soon".
A senior Hamas terrorist told WorldNetDaily that Hamas is encouraged by the funding and arming of Fatah in Judea and Samaria – as the Islamist group is certain it will inherit those weapons and funds just as it did when it took over Gaza. "Like the American weapons in Gaza we told you would come to Hamas, also the weapons and aid the Americans are giving to Abu Mazen (Abbas) as part of their conspiracy against us in the West Bank will find its way to the Palestinian resistance and Hamas," Hamas’s Abu Abdullah said. He would not say whether Hamas was planning to take over Judea and Samaria from Fatah in the near future, but said he “hopes” that the US continues to provide large quantities of weaponry to Fatah so Hamas can inherit them. Hamas is currently “swimming” in American weapons seized last week from Fatah facilities, according to Abdullah. A7

Enough for now.

Kashrut Alerts (in Israel)

How interesting... The Israeli Chief Rabbinate Kashrut division has issued the following Kashrut update.

1. Champaign Mushroom Pieces under the name "Kafri uBayti", barcode 7290003285129, imported to Israel by "Euro Standard" has an OU and Chief Rabbinate Hashgacha. This product does NOT have Chief Rabbinate hashgacha, and should be removed from all shelves and returned to the importer.

2. The "Neve Midbar" restaurant at the Dead Sea has a Kashrut Certificate (Teudat Kashrut) from the Badatz "NEzer HaHidur" organization, but no local rabbinate certification. In a check we performed, there were meats which were not Chalak, and meats with no certification at all. Be advised!

3. Iberian Airlines serves kosher meals from the "Mespool" company in Poland, which carries the Kashrut certification of the Badatz Johannesberg and "Nussbaum-Atlas Kosher". In a check with Rav Moshe Kurztag, head of the Johannesberg Beit Din, that this company in Poland is not under their certification since 2005. Be advised!

4. Imported Haagen Daaz ice cream products do not have the Chief Rabbinate Hashgacha because of "Cholov Akum". Mashgichim: Do not let these products onto premises you are responsible for.

5. Mentos fruit sucking candies, imported by "Parfetti Van Mila, Holand", importer license 4002-0722 claims to be "Kosher Lemehadrin" under the supervision of Rabbi Moshe Alon of France. Our investigation revealed that he did not give the hashgacha, nor is he authorized by the Chief Rabbinate to give Kashrut certification...

6. "Ginger" brand spices in Israel, claim to be under the supervision of the Rabbinical Municipal Council of Gan Rave, yet they are not.

7. After receving many complaints that the Isrotel hotel chain forces guests to leave on Shabbat, at 16:00. Be advised and check with the local Mashgiach that the Hotel respects the Shabbat; ie, mechanical locks, shabbat elevators, no electric eyes in bathrooms, etc.

8. Coffeeks instant coffee, barcode 7290003098996, claims to be Koshe under the hasgacha of R' Avraham Hochwald. It does not have his hasgacha. Be warned!

Also included is a list of restaurants in Israel that claim to be Kosher, but do not have certification...see the Hebrew document for all the details.

Disturbing Shomron News

This morning, my beeper (that's "pager" in American) received the following message from our local IDF command operations center:
This morning at 07:30, there will be 4 armed Palestinian Policemen in the villages of the censored and censored regions in order to secure the [Palestinian] Bagrut [high school matriculation] exams. The above [armed PA policemen] will leave at 14:30.
This means:

1. Armed Palestinian Policemen are in and around the villages in the Shomron.
2. Palestinian school children who take exams require armed policemen.

Is that because:

a. Armed policemen needed to prevent cheating
b. Armed policemen needed to ensure only Fatah kids can cheat, and not the Hamas ones
c. It's an excuse to allow PA policemen to walk around armed.
d. The Israeli government thinks it's a good idea for PA policemen in the West Bank to walk around armed, to give Fatah the upper hand over Hamas.
e. Keeps the concession stand/Coke machine from being over-run by rioters
f. Palestinians are worried that Settler kids will try and disrupt their matriculation exams
g. Palestinians are worried that Settler kids will try and storm the Palestinian concession stand/Coke machine

Add your own...but use a No. 2 Lead Pencil.

In any event - Point 1 is worrying.

Bye Mom. I'm on my way to Heaven...

Controversial new anti-drug commercial targets teenagers...

In a video clip we're all too familiar with, a teenager dressed as a Palestinian Suicide Bomber says goodbye to his parents as if he's about to blow himself up. The caveat; he's from an regular family in Ra'anana...and he's not going to blow himself up, but go to heaven by taking drugs.

Judge for yourselves.

Translation to English:
"My name is Omer Kendel, 16-year-old from Ra'anana, I bid goodbye to my parents Vered and Shmuel and my sister Karen and go to a party in Tel Aviv. There's only one way to be truly free: To get drunk, take drugs, get hammered. Don't cry, mother, I'm going to heaven."
Channel 2 TV refused to air the commercial, but other Israeli channels will.

What's your Hashkafa?

Following is a newspaper article (don't know from HaModia or Yated Neeman)...summary follows...

How Many Times Does it say "Moshe" in the Torah?

Rav Chaim Kanievsky [son of the reknown "Steipler" Rav] tells student: Computer can't be trusted for anything, not even on a simple word search.

A Torah scholar approached R' Chaim and asked him how many times the word "Moshe" appears in the Torah. On the spot, R' Chaim (known to be an amazing Torah Scholar with a phenomenal memory) replied, 414 times. His student replied that to the best of his knowledge, the word Moshe appears 2 additional times.

R' Chaim smiled and replied that his student must have checked via a computer, and the 2 additional times his student was thinking of, were instances where the word was spelled the same way as "Moshe" but had different nikud (punctuation) [thereby a computer would have grouped them all together for a total of 416 instead of 414].

Points to ponder:

The green highlighted sub-heading claims that R' Chaim said, "Computer can't be trusted for anything, not even on a simple word search" R' Chaim never said anything of the sort.

This article can be read in many ways, depending on your hashkafa:

Computers are a stupid waste of time; can't rely on them for anything (assumes: Chadash Assur Min HaTorah -- anything new is forbidden)

Computers can be of great value, need to tweak them to ensure they do proper word searches with Nikud/punctuation (ie, Bar Ilan University researcher)

R' Chaim Kanievsky is smarter than a computer (Artscroll Hashkafa)

R' Chaim Kanievsky is one of the greatest Torah Scholars of our time with an outstanding memory. Newspaper sub-headlines that imply that computers are stupid and can't be relied upon for word searches, are written by idiotic editors. (my thoughts)

Your thoughts?

Enough! Arafat's Nobel Peace Prize stolen!

If this doesn't bring in multi-national troops to Gaza, I don't know what will.

Enraged Fatah leaders on Saturday accused Hamas militiamen of looting the home of former Palestinian Authority chairman Yasser Arafat in Gaza City.

"They stole almost everything inside the house, including Arafat's Nobel Peace Prize medal," said Ramallah-based Fatah spokesman Ahmed Abdel Rahman. "Hamas militiamen and gangsters blew up the main entrance to the house before storming it. They stole many of Arafat's documents and files, gifts he had received from world leaders and even his military outfits."

Abdel Rahman said the attackers also raided the second floor of the house and stole the personal belongings of his widow, Suha, and daughter, Zahwa. "They stole all the widow's clothes and shoes," he added. "They also took Arafat's pictures with his daughter."

I think we should start an on-line petition to give the Palestinian people, Shimon Peres' Noble Peace Prize as a replacement.
