I really DONT hate Modiin
So, for the record, I really do NOT hate Modi'in.
In fact, here are some exclusive rainbow photos from last Thursday which I took while driving through Modi'in.
And of course, you can't go anywhere in Israel without seeing tens of thousands of street signs named like this.

Who hates mikvaot?
Israel has its share of problems with mikvaot as well. Kfar Vradim, a mixed secular-religious community is an example. YNETNEWS reports:
The Kfar Vradim Council has unanimously approved the construction priorities recommendations drawn up by a special committee, which rated the construction of a mikveh at the bottom of the list.I understand why a mikva would be of little importance to those who wouldn't use it -- but to say it shouldn't be there at all, and intentionally offend those religious residents who would use it...that's simply secular coercion. At the top of the list were a community center, youth sports center and a junior high school auditorium. A synagogue and the mikveh were rated last. The residents also rated their priorities on the construction of a council hall, an arts and culture center, a school gymnasium, etc.
The proposal was met with some reservations on the part of the Ofek faction. "I will vote in favor, though I'm making a great compromise," faction member Yaakov Ziv said. "It's no secret I'd rather see the mikveh out of the list."
The religious residents, however were outraged over the decision. "This is unfounded hatred, even anti-Semitism," chairman of the synagogue committee Perry Shahaf said. The secular residents even started a petition against any mikva in their community:"What’s happening in Kfar Vradim is pure secular coercion, pure racism," he added and noted they intend to fight the decision. "We'll get a mikveh eventually, even if we wait light years for it. The council head will be replaced and we'll get our mikveh to which we are entitled by law."
"Kfar Vradim is a secular and pluralistic community, but pluralism doesn't mean changing its secular nature. Religious residents may live amongst us but must not enforce their lifestyles on us."
The religious residents are planning on building the mikva from their own money now, in an existing structure, so that "public land wont go to 'waste'", but it seems some of their neighbors object to that as well. How is the existence of a mikva, "enforcing a religious lifestyle" on a secular community?

Eli Yishai - Decline
Surprisingly (at first glance), in very recent remarks, the Obama administration said that the obstacles to peace aren't Avigdor Lieberman, nor Eli Yishai, just the Likud party.
Pundits (besides Feiglin) mistakenly thought Obama meant Netanyahu. But they didn't understand that Obama is getting heavily involved in understanding the nitty-gritty of Israeli internal politics - and is intensely trying to meddle there.
Obama meant what was said. The Likud party, not Bibi.
As such, Bibi has been fighting his head off since them in trying to block the already delayed internal Likud elections - elections that will just confirm that Bibi is not taking the party where the party wants to go, and where the nation wants to go - just too close to where Obama wants us to go.
Already there are concerns that it will go so far as ballot boxes being corrupted to ensure a Bibi victory.
But this is a multi-front battle. And pressuring Bibi is only one tactic in Obama's arsenal. And unfortunately, but as expected, Bibi seems to be slowly caving in under the treats and pressures of the Obama administration.
As I mentioned, the Obama administration, after vitriolically attacking Eli Yishai, suddenly said that Yishai won't be an obstacle to peace. They believe that Eli Yishai is someone they can subvert to their side, for the right price.
And then yesterday, Eli Yishai received a personal invitation to visit the White House and meet with Obama - even Bibi hasn't gotten that, Bibi's had to go through the back doors and back rooms to get inside for meetings.
Eli Yishai has only one move to make here, if he is brave enough.
As disrespectful as it is, Eli Yishai needs to decline the invitation.
Eli Yishai needs to make it clear that Jerusalem will not be divided on his watch, and there is no point in even going to a meeting where the sole point is to discuss that very issue. Eli Yishai must not give even any semblance of legitimacy to the idea of even discussing this evil idea.
If Eli Yishai thinks he can go to the White House and leave personally untainted and Jerusalem undamaged, he is wrong.
Eli Yishai - do the right thing - decline the invitation (politely). If nothing else, perhaps Bibi will get the message that it is also OK to sometimes say "No".

Wednesday's Muqata Update
2. We've received information that some of our reader are unable to reach the Muqata blog, due to organizations who limit internet access. The following arrived today (IP address fuzzed out to retain their anonymity...).
Can you figure out why we're being filtered?
3. Razi Barkai on IDF radio this morning around 9:07 AM: "Why is there still a media blackout on the name of the State's Witness against Olmert & Co. in the HolyLand corruption case? Every single Israeli knows who he is."
4. Tomorrow (Thursday) is an important vote within the Likud. Central Committee members will be voting whether to extend their (already 8 year) term by another 2-3 years, or whether there should be elections now for central committee membership.
Netanayhu has turned this into a "Bibi vs. Feiglin" fight to the death, and he Netanyahu's imploring central committee members to postpone elections by years...maybe even indefinitely.
See what non-"Feiglin"-supporting MK's have to say:
"MK Miri Regev explained Wednesday why she would vote against the motion on Thursday. "The Likud party is the largest popular party and to my great delight Prime Minister Netanyahu instated the primaries in 1992. The Likud has a constitution. Just as one doesn't change the rules in the middle of a football game, on this case one should hold elections on their due date and not change the very rules we set ourselves."
MK Danny Danon is also opposed to the initiative and is scheduled to hold an activists' meeting on Wednesday evening ahead of the vote. "One doesn’t change the constitution in a democratic movement, only in extreme cases of war or a state of emergency. The opposition for the move is wide and stems from principals and not from a will to start a 'Netanyahu-Feiglin'-like street fight."
MK Yariv Levin has also announced he will not support the prime minister on Thursday's vote. "I am convinced that an ideological Likud party which is open and revitalized will bolster the prime minister and help him deal with the great challenges we face. Likud unity is not in question. We shall all be committed to whatever is decided and we will stand together ahead of our future struggles," he said. (source)
One should remember that the current Central Committee is over 8 years old, and many of the members are active supporters of the Kadima party, who abandoned the Likud when Ariel Sharon created Kadima.
The reason Netanyahu is scared of elections is because he doesn't want the tens of thousands of Likud members who are aligned with Moshe Feiglin voting for central committee members who would be hostile to Bibi's alleged far reaching plans for a Palestinian State with Jerusalem as its capital.
Anyone committee member who values democracy more than their seat and more than Bibi's attempts to rule the Likud like Kadima, should vote tomorrow in favor of immediate elections. This has nothing to do with Feiglin, and everything to do with Bibi's fear of democracy.
4. I'm off to Har Greizim now to see the Shomronim's Korban Pesach. Should be fascinating!
Regards,
Jameel

Punishing Success
But the Socialist contingent in the Knesset, Shelli Yachimovich (Labor) and Haim Katz (Likud) are threatening to tear all this progress down in one shot.
Socialist and liberals believe that the market is a limited size pie that gets sliced up accordingly. If one person makes too much, it comes at the expense of someone else, and it isn’t fair that any one person makes so much more than someone else.
Capitalists and Free Marketers understand that the market is not limited in size, and the goal is to create new wealth. And market forces determines salaries and value for labor done and wealth creation.
These Knesset Socialists believe that “excessive” (as they define it) profit taking is bad, and a Jerusalem Post editorial states in an attempt to justify this Socialist view and legislation that will put a relative cap on corporate salaries, that salary X "is a figure most of us would consider immensely more than sufficient".
Sorry Jerusalem Post, but who are you (or a bunch of socialists) to decide how much I think is enough?
The title of the editorial is “Caps for the fat cats”, but it can just as easily be called “Punishing Success”.
If this legislation goes through, we’re going to see 3 things.
(1) Executives will leave Israel for freer market where they can get salaries and bonuses that reflect the wealth they are generating – and Israel will lose as a result.
(2) Companies will find very creative ways to reward their wealth generating executives appropriately, so nothing will be changed in terms of the distribution of wealth.
(3) Companies will fire all their low salary employees and hire them back through third party agencies on limited contracts – probably at very bad conditions.
What this legislation does not do, and here is the real problem, is place salary caps on the average public-sector company employees in relation to the average Israeli’s salary for a similar job. That is where the real abuse of the Israeli public happens.
There is no reason that public employees, supported by our tax shekel should make so much more (and that’s before the perks and pensions) than the average Israeli in an equivalent job, is there?
In 2007 the average monthly salary was NIS 7,922, while the average salary for a public servant (paid for from our taxes) was NIS 11,786.
With around 100,000 public servants making NIS 3000 a month more than the average Israeli, that works out to 4 billion tax payers shekels a year extra taken from the pockets of the average Israeli!
While in 2008, employees of public-owned monopolies made 2.5 times the average Israeli’s salary.
But let’s take it a step further, did you know that the average MK, Shelli and Haim included, make around 3-4 times more in individual gross salaries than the average Israeli?
So to rephrase the Jerusalem Post, as public servants (with a lot of side-benefits and perks) their making the same salary as the average Israeli "is a figure most of us would consider immensely more than sufficient".
Wouldn’t you agree?
But Shelly and Haim aren't addressing their salaries.
Shelli and Haim are playing with wealth redistribution for everyone else and trying to legislate into law an attempt to stifle Israel’s free market in the name of ideological Socialist fiscal equality for all.
Let’s instead see more privatization, reduced personal income taxes, and cutting VAT in at least half for starters.
Socialism. Feh.
I saw an interesting related post here.

Obama's National Security Advisor's Joke
A Taliban militant gets lost and is wandering around the desert looking for water. He finally arrives at a store run by a Jew and asks for water. The Jewish vendor tells him he doesn’t have any water but can gladly sell him a tie. The Taliban, the jokes goes on, begins to curse and yell at the Jewish storeowner. The Jew, unmoved, offers the rude militant an idea: Beyond the hill, there is a restaurant; they can sell you water. The Taliban keeps cursing and finally leaves toward the hill. An hour later he’s back at the tie store. He walks in and tells the merchant: “Your brother tells me I need a tie to get into the restaurant.”
Funny? Insensitive? Anti-semitic? Miserly Jewish Merchant?
Is it appropriate for the national security adviser of the United States to tell jokes about miserly Jewish merchants?
Do you think he would have made a joke about an African American?
Or maybe, the audience's laughter was like that in, "Throw the Jew down the well" and Jones is simply a version of Borat?

Holy Holyland Corruption, Batman
The answer obviously, corruption.
As the police dredges through the sewers of Israel's past and present politicians, the scandal has grown to include other real-estate projects through the country, including "Tzuk Manara" near Kiryat Shmona and the Dead Sea Hotel district.
To date the following names have been publicized as suspects and/or connected to the case.
- R' Ovadia Yosef, Shas Spiritual Leader [source]
- Foreign Minister, MK Avigdor Lieberman (Yisrael Beiteinu) [source]
- MK Ruhama Avraham (Kadima) [source]
- past-MK Danny Naveh (Likud) [source]
- past-Prime Minister Ehud Olmert (Kadima) [source]
- Shula Zaken (Olmert's office manager) [source]
- Attorney Uri Messer (long-time confidante, senior Olmert aide) [source]
- Meir Rabin (Chareid Askan) [source]
- Uri Lupolianski (Former Jerusalem mayor, UTJ) [source]
- Yehoshua Pollack (former Jerusalem deputy mayor, UTJ) [source]
- Yaakov Efrati (former Israel Lands Authority chairman) [source]
- Dan Dankner (former Bank Hapoalim chairman and former Israel Salt Industries owner) [source]
- Eli Simhayoff (former Jerusalem deputy mayor, director of the Danya Cebus construction company) [source]
Additional names that have popped up as secondary connections.
- Aliza Olmert, wife of former PM, Ehud Olmert. Were her lame paintings sold for thousands, as a means of giving Ehud Olmert a cash infusion? Leading businessmen reportedly own her paintings, including Alrov tycoon and chairman Alfred Akirov, Dov Lautman, and Adv. Ram Caspi. [source]
- Supreme Court Justice Edna Arbel. She's good friends with Uri Messer's wife...and also owns a luxury apartment in the Holyland building monstrosity. [source]
Don't forget, there's the censored, media blackout on the State's Witness, reportedly a senior member of Israel law-enforcement or judiciary branches...I can't print this person's name yet, or provide any hints as to their identity.
Of course, everyone is innocent till proven guilty; except for Ehud Olmert.
Stay tuned - many more names to come...

Slandering R' Yuval Cherlow
I wanted to blog about Uri Tuval, the Associate Editor of Haaretz's Weekend Magazine "musaf" section. He used his personal Facebook wall to announce his views (which weren't really a surprise) about how career, combat IDF soldiers from the hilltop outposts aren't wanted in the same country as himself. Calling recently fallen IDF golani solider and officer, Eliraz Peretz, a "Fascist Jihadist," he managed to outrage many in Israel.
Due to heavy public pressure, he removed his entire Facebook account and apologized to Miriam Peretz -- the mother of fallen soldier Eliraz Peretz.
I wanted to write about BTselem's Information Director, "Lizi Sagie" who wrote a few choice thoughts about Israel.
“The IDF Memorial Day is a pornographic circus of glorifying grief and silencing voices.”
Sagie is an outspoken supporter of the alleged espionage IDF soldier/spy criminal Anat Kamm.
Sagie proposes making peace by means of destroying Israel and then by Jewish women ending all birth of babies so that these babies cannot grow up to be soldiers.
Again, due to public uproar, even BTselem couldn't [publicly] stomach her views, and she has since resigned/been fired.
Yet, I took a deep breath, counted to 10, and didn't publish these stories despite their importance.
And then, I saw an article written by R' Yuval Cherlow stating that Im Tirtzu's reports against the New Israel Fund, were considered "Sin'at Chinam" -- baseless hatred, and that the Im Tirtzu organization was splitting the nation by dividing everyone into a "good camp" and a bad camp."
Personally, I was infuriated when reading that article. Did he really think that Im Tirtzu's motives were that of "Sin'at Chinam"? That people have nothing better to do with their time than to run after the "New Israel Fund" simply because of baseless hatred?
Far from being my favorite center-left reporter, Ben-Caspit wrote a few months ago about the whole Im Tirtzu campaign against the New Israel Fund. He ended it as follows:
Personally, I think the campaign on Naomi Chazan's head was a mistake [putting a "horn" on her head and saying she was directly responsible for NIF]. It was not my style or was it necessary. On the other hand, the debate itself is legitimate [about NIF's funded NGO's aligning themselves with Goldstone, etc.]. Maybe even important. But my friends on the radical left, those that support the right to criticize, and say very difficult things, they simply cannot accept any criticism. They are not used to being criticized. In the bubble they live in, they would simply "delete" any criticism that was directed towards them. No more.
Caspit asks: The "Im Tirzu" organization was written about me twice in my columns because:
1. They sent me lots and lots of money and they gave me a penthouse in the Holyland building complex.
2. I am an undercover radical right wing agent for many years. I yelled "srak srak" (the bullets are blank when Rabin was shot). My Shabak code name is "Thundering Mercury"
3. I have a fetish for the right wing.
4. I thought the 2 reports published by Im Tirzu were interesting, based on fact, and worthy of public debate.
5. I received exclusivity by Im Tirtzu to publish them.
So I wondered, did R' Yuval Cherlow honestly believe that Im Tritzu's attack on the NIF was based on hatred? I was disappointed.
Today, I found out the reason...the article allegedly by R' Cherlow, was fabricated (by whom, I don't yet know).
R' Cherlow was asked about his article on the moreshet website:
Dear Respected Rav,
I read on the "Srugim" website that you came out very viciously against the "Im Tirtzu" organization. As someone who is an admirer of the Rabbi, I would like to understand your position.
Additionally, I read "talkback comments" that claimed the Rabbi receives money from the New Israel Fund. Is this correct?
Apologies.
Reply from R' Yuval Cherlow:
Shalom,
1. I have never said anything about the "Im Trizu" organization -- not for it, not against it, not directly or indirectly, not commercially, nor to the case at hand. Not one word. More than that, I don't come out against anything "viciously" under any circumstances, and I generally just describe by viewpoint. What was written [in my name] on the srugim website it an utter falsehood, and a lie. I would like to clarify that I am not claiming my words were taken out of context (I don't need to claim this because what was published in my name, was never said by me), yet I have never spoken a word about the Im Tirzu organization, and what is written on the srugim website is not connected to me in any manner, shape or form. One has to wonder what a man is to do when such lies are publicized.
2. The only thing I said to srugim was that the debate via "yizkor" (the politically motivated initiatives surrounding Israel's Memorial day for security forces victims of Arab terror) was in my eyes, inappropriate and it created debate on the single day we have unity.
3. I have never had any interaction with the New Israel Fund - not directly or indirectly, not commercially, nor to the case at hand. Additionally, I am not "funded" in any manner, shape or form.
I am humiliated by what has been published and I am unsure what to do about it, except
to express my pain as to where we have gotten to [as a society].
All the best,
R' Yuval Cherlow
Where do we go from here? Are we so polarized that we have no remaining common ground left?
I guard your national identity
I defend your children
I give my life for your family
and you spit in my face.
After you fail to kill me on the outside
you come to kill me from within
I haven't seen my mother for a month
not my children, my home, not my wife.
I always charge ahead
with my back to you
You sharpen the knife
And more than anything, it is this thought which burns my soul.
And you, how do you not understand
I am your brother, you are the enemy.
You hate me, while I love.
When I cry, you laugh behind my back.
You are after all, my brother
You are after all, my brother
I am the future
you are the past.
and the present between us is broken.
I go hungry for you, while you are a glutton and are sated.
When my throat is dry, you drink
my mouth is always sealed for your safety
yet you give me away to foreigners
I am your brother, you are the enemy.
You hate me, while I love.
When I cry, you laugh behind my back.
You are after all, my brother
You are after all, my brother.
May He who blessed our fathers, Avraham, Isaac and Jacob,
may He Bless the soldiers of the IDF
who stand to defend our country and the cities of our G-d
from Lebanona to the Egyptian desert
from the great Sea to the Arava, in all places
on land, air and sea.
I am your brother, you are the enemy.
You hate me, while I love.
When I cry, you laugh behind my back.
You are after all, my brother
You are after all, my brother.
You kill me
You are after all, my brother
You are after all, my brother.
Because your G-d that walks with you, to fight with you against your enemies, to save you, and let us say, Amen.

Which Arabs Are Shooting at Eilat Today?
A Katyusha rocket apparently fired at the southern city on Thursday exploded in the Aqaba industrial zone in Jordan.
There were no reports of injuries. The report was received by the Eilat Municipality from Jordanian sources.
Another rocket was fired, apparently a 107 mm one, and landed in the Red Sea. Jordan is on the look out for a third rocket. (YNET)
So...Who's Shooting at Eilat?
Egypt denies the shooting came from the Sinai:
"Security forces are patrolling the border with Israel, and the area is under Egyptian security control. This comes in addition to alertness of Bedouin residents of Sinai along the border that partake in the defense of the eastern border alongside Egypt's security forces. No extremist group can infiltrate the area in order to shake the security," an Egyptian source reported. (source)
A Jordanian official said there was a blast at an air-conditioning plant on the outskirts of Aqaba at around 7:00 am (0400 GMT) that did not wound anyone or cause much damage, and that the explosion was under investigation.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, denied that any rockets had been fired from Jordanian territory and said "we know of no rockets in Eilat." (source)
The IDF said it was investigating the source of the attack, stressing that there was no evidence to suggest either of the rockets hit Israeli territory, though everyone seems convinced that Eilat was the target.
I guess we shot the Katyushas at ourselves.

Israel Memorial Day in Toronto
Please pass this invitation on to your family and friends in the Toronto area.
Cheryl will be speaking about her son Daniel who fell in the line of duty in the IDF. I heard her speak 3 years ago:
Daniel "a.k.a. Mendel the Platoon Commander” was killed in battle in Shechem (Nablus) on “Yod Gimel Nissan” at 5am as he led his elite IDF unit in an operation to capture three wanted Palestinian terrorists responsible for the deaths of at least thirty and the injury of over one hundred and forty Israelis.
Despite Mrs. Mandel's calm and quiet demeanor, her determination radiates to all.
"The terrorists won when they killed Daniel, but I won't give them the benefit of another "win" by getting to me as well", she said.
It saddened me to hear her say that, "When Daniel was killed in the line of duty as an IDF solider defending Israel, we were no longer olim chadashim...'new immigrants'...as we joined the ranks of Israelis as families of fallen soldiers."
I hope that everyone loses their oleh chadash status, without having to undergo such personal tragedy.
She summarized by saying that part of the training her son Daniel underwent, was the 110 kilometer "trek" that IDF soldiers in the Nachal Palsar unit have to run. While her son was not the strongest, he was given the task of carrying the "mag"...the machine gun, which weighs around 25 pounds. Daniel's commander told him, "Mandel, carry it," and he did. It was a very difficult task to run with a "mag"for 110 kilometers, yet he successfully finished the trek carrying it.
Cheryl Mandel likens that trek to her own; G-d, our commanding officer gave her the task of carrying the burden of her son's sacrifice on her trek through life.
Just as her son successfully completed his trek, she hopes to continue living her life (despite the unexpected task thrown her way) and moving forward optimistically, building the Land of Israel.
As this important day starts, please take a few minutes to view the following video (with English subtitles) about this one solider. While there are 22,500 other families and each one has their own story to tell, I would like to present this one tonight about Daniel Mandel.
More information about Daniel can be found at this website, daniel-mandel.co.il including his family's contact information.

That Terrible Day
And there are good days in the army and bad days. And sometimes days that seem bad turn out to be good. And sometimes days that start off good, go bad.
Your first Shabbat out of the army, walking around town with your uniform and gun – good day.
Your first Shabbat stuck on the base when you expected to go home – bad day.
Getting stuck all day with kitchen duty – bad day, until you realize in retrospect how much fun you actually had – good day.
The day you spent without sleep and endless guard duties and other menial tasks – bad day.
Your first day in Lebanon – scary day, exciting day, fun day, long day, good day.
The day you kill your first terrorist on his way to murder Jews – great day.
Calling Jameel from Lebanon or Gaza to brag a bit - an even better day.
But there is one day that is marked by what my mother calls “that terrible day”.
He had enlisted with me. We weren’t close, we only occasionally spoke, but at a time that I needed some good advice and someone to talk to, he happened to have been there at just the right time, had the exact right thing to say, and the right advice to give.
The last time I saw him was in Jerusalem. He was across the street going in the opposite direction. I had gotten back from the latest mission, and I assume he was back from his. Time was short and we both wanted to get home for Shabbat, so we just waved to one another and continued on our way.
Back on the base I heard the news.
Just barely a week after I saw him, he was murdered by terrorists.
Till then, the army was fun and games. Life was fun and games.
But this was reality. This was a good person, who signed up to save Jewish lives and defend the Jewish people, and here he was, murdered by terrorists, not in combat, not in a fair fight, but in cold blood.
I remember the details of that day. I remember every conversation I had on the base. I remember where I sat, and where I walked.
I found a payphone and called my parents collect. We spoke all night. I don’t remember about what. I just know that we spoke. It helped. But it didn’t change anything.
My mother calls it “that terrible day".
I can’t give meaning to the day he was murdered and I can’t give meaning to his murder. He was murdered simply because he was a Jew. He was murdered simply because as an IDF soldier he represented the Jewish people and represented defending the Jewish nation.
It’s been years, and life has gone forward, yet there is still a hole from where he was ripped away.
I remember that terrible day. I remember it as "that terrible day".

Stranded by Volcanic Ash
I could have easily ended up there.
Yet even if that were the case, I wouldn't have worried. While it would have been unfortunate to be away from my family for Shabbat, I'm sure I would have managed just fine. The "hacnasat orchim" (welcoming, taking in of guests) of London's Jewish community is truly heart warming. I recall a Shabbat weekend I spent there when strangers invited me for Shabbat meals as I walked from Hendon to Golders Green.
This past weekend was no exception, as my work colleagues spent Shabbat with friends of friends, only meeting them for the first time on Friday afternoon, as they gladly opened their homes to fellow Jews, stranded travelers on their way home to Israel. Friends of mine spent this past Shabbat in Hendon, Golders Green, Stamford Hill, Finchley, and many other London suburbs.
And now, in a race against the ash cloud, my friends are taking trains, cabs and rental cars through Europe towards Spain and the Southern areas of the continent, to try and catch flights back home to Israel -- trying to make it home before Yom Ha'atzmaut.
Good luck people -- we're waiting for you!
Have a story about being stranded by the ash cloud? We'd love to hear it. Drop it in a comment or email us muqata@gmail.com

PS: What I found insane about this Iceland volcano story, was the weird connection between Israel and Iceland. Iceland's President's wife is Dorrit Moussaieff, born in Jerusalem to a wealthy devout Sephardic-observant Bukharian Jewish family. Moussaieff married Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, president of Iceland, on his 60th birthday in 2003 and became the First Lady of Iceland.
Wikipedia says: "She is probably the most significant Jew in Icelandic history."
Probably the only significant Jew in Icelandic history. Too bad she got that status by marrying out.
Yet hearing her on the radio this morning, speaking in fluent Hebrew was truly bizarre.

Official complaint regarding misleading travel advertising in the United Kingdom
Sir,
I would like to lodge an official complaint regarding misleading travel advertising in the United Kingdom.
On the official website for Britain's national tourism agency, "VisitBritain" (http://www.visitbritain.org), there is a listing under the title of "Visit Britain" for the "Northern Ireland Travel Guide."
http://www.visitbritain.us/
Might I suggest that the travel website "VisitBritain" should be renamed, "VisitBritishIsles"? Or perhaps it should be made explicitly clear that while England claims that Northern Ireland is part of"Britain", the self-determination of Northern Ireland disputes that claim.

Sincerely,
Jameel Rashid

King Felafel Wins US Robot Competition
Article Ant & Arutz Sheva report:
A team of teenagers from the Upper Galilee's Misgav High School has won the 17th annual Fire Fighting Home Robot competition in the United States for the second year in a row. They named their robot K.O.F. – "King of Falafel" -- to honor their favorite food in the contest held at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. (A7)
Misgav team, whose robot was called K.O.F. (King of Falafel – in honor of the students’ favorite food), competed in Sunday’s fire fighting contest in which its autonomous-controlled robot had to navigate a maze, extinguish a flame and return to the starting point in the fastest time. The coach of the team was Haim Driben and the students were Eyal Shifman, Ram Gerassy, Yuval Zach-Zlica and Zur Shental.
The K.O.F. team was one of six from Misgav High School, which has become a perennial contestant in the two-day event, which typically takes place in April, when the Oosting Gym is filled with large wooden mazes, posters, and multi-lingual students fiddling with their laptop computers and colorful, awe-inspiring robots.
This year, as was the case in 2009, the competition was spread over two days, with the RoboWaiter contest held Saturday and the fire fighting contest held Sunday. RobotWaiter, with its emphasis on socially assistive robotics, was co-sponsored by the Connecticut Council on Developmental Disabilities. The lead sponsor of the entire weekend was Versa Products Company, Inc., whose president and CEO is Jan Larrson, ’77.
The degree of difficulty in the RoboWaiter contest was particularly high, as the robots had to circumvent a chair, grasp a plate of food from a shelf, go around a grandmotherly figure and deliver the food to an older man seated at a table. None of the dozen or so teams that entered the competition were successful, though several came close. Both the chair and the grandmother took a beating, and the plateful of Cocoa Krispies frequently ended up on the floor.
“In spite of the unfortunate incidents, the spirit of the students was unbelievable and they really bounced back,” said Frank Reed, vice chairman of the council on disabilities. “They weren’t discouraged at all. They believe in themselves.” (Article Ant)

Britain: Kotel not in Israel
The Israeli tourist office has been criticised by the [British] Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for including images of the Palestinian-run West Bank in an advert for a holiday in Israel.
The advert for the Israeli government's Tourist Office stated that you could "travel the entire length of Israel in six hours".
Images shown included the Wailing Wall and the Dome of the Rock – the oldest Islamic building in the world, built in the seventh century. The area in East Jerusalem is at the centre of a dispute between Palestinians and Jews, with more than 500,000 Jews living in the disputed territories.
A reader complained that the printed advert featured a photograph of East Jerusalem and said it misleadingly implied that it was part of the state of Israel. The ASA said that the advert featured various landmarks that were in East Jerusalem which were part of the Occupied Territories.
It ruled that the advert breached truthfulness guidelines and ordered that it not be used again, adding: "We told the Israeli Tourist Office not to imply that places in the Occupied Territories were part of the state of Israel."
It said: "The ASA noted the itinerary image of Jerusalem used in the ad featured the Western Wall of the Temple Mount and the Dome of the Rock, which were both in East Jerusalem, a part of the Occupied Territories of the West Bank.
"We noted the ad stated 'You can travel the entire length of Israel in six hours – imagine what you can experience in four days', and 'Visit now for more itineraries in Israel', and considered that readers were likely to understand that the places featured in the itinerary were all within the state of Israel.
"We understood, however, that the status of the occupied territory of the West Bank was the subject of much international dispute, and, because we considered that the ad implied that the part of East Jerusalem featured in the image was part of the state of Israel, we concluded that the ad was likely to mislead." Read the rest of their drivel, here.
I'm sure Gush-Shalom is drooling over all these attacks on Israel. Its probably one of their activists that complained to the British ASA in the first place.

iPad Banned from Israel
According to the ministry, "the iPads sold today in the U.S., only match USA Standards for Wi-Fi modem transmission power."
"Israel's Wi-Fi standard is similar to the European standards," the ministry explained, "while the American standard allows for a lower power transmission. The Wi-Fi transmission component is preventing certification of the iPad in Israel. Remember, Israel and Europe has not yet begun marketing the iPad."
The Ministry of Communications contacted i-Digital, Apple's representative in Israel, requesting to get all the information about the device to confirm its certification for Israel.
To date, it is that known that a number of customers who brought iPad into the country have asked to return it abroad.
The Ministry of Communications reported that they are not currently considering a "manhunt" for the iPads that are waiting for the proper permits.
However, the second-hand market of Apple products on the Internet is growing following the launch of the iPad. The WINWIN Site published dozens of messages advertising iPads for NIS 4,000. Some of the offers have noted the iPad they are selling is "straight out of the box."
