US Representative Shot...Fighting for her life.

The US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords from the State of Arizona was battling for her life on Sunday after an assailant shot her in the head and killed six others as she met with constituents in Tucson.

Reuters: The 40-year-old Democratic lawmaker was in critical condition and doctors were cautiously optimistic she would survive. The suspected gunman was in federal custody as investigators sought a motive in the rare shooting of a U.S. lawmaker and looked for a possible accomplice.

The suspect, identified as Jared Lee Loughner, 22, opened fire with a semi-automatic pistol at point-blank range outside a supermarket on Saturday afternoon. He was tackled by two bystanders after the shooting.

Among the dead were a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl. Twelve other people were wounded in the shooting rampage.
The Forward reports:

Giffords, 40, is a member of the powerful Committee on Armed Services, on the
Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Science and Technology. A
third-generation Arizonan, she is part of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog and
New Democrat coalitions.

She is a vocal advocate for renewable energy, particularly solar energy, and has said improving security along the U.S.-Mexico border is among her top priorities. She is also a supporter of Israel, and is considered a safe pro-Israel vote in the House.

Wishing her a speedy, and full recovery.

This is just terrible news!! However pointing fingers at Palin will not bring the dead back and cure the wounded. Instead of putting the blame on someone lets wait and see all the details....

Although it appears in the tag, it is not explicit in the post, Representative Giffords is Jewish.

Is she Jewish? I read that her mother was not Jewish. So when and where did she concert and if she did convert did her husband convert too? Somehow, I find that hard to believe.

She visited Israel and then embraced her Jewish heritage a la Reform patrilineal descent, speaking openly about the positive characteristics of Jewish women and Jews in general. And very vocal for old-fashioned Jewish values. For those of us who follow more halachic standards, she's certainly someone we would say we're proud to have associating with the Jewish camp.
