Jameel's Memorial Day in the IDF Reserves

Its been a while since I found the time to write a proper blog post about my IDF milluim reserve duty. While the majority of Israelis will be commemorating Israel’s memorial day and celebrating Independence Day at home, there are those who in the reserves who are working overtime in the IDF in the reserves, keeping the country safe.

This tour of service for 24 days has been rather eye opening…as we serve in a forward combat IDF outpost in the hills surrounding Hevron. We interact with Arabs and Jews, UN representatives, Left wingers and anarchists, the media…and settlers as well. What we really want is for the Shabbat weekends to pass quietly – a rainy weekend means that Leftists won’t go to the Susiya area and create disturbances with the Arabs against the settlers. When it rains, everyone stays home, and we can get some much needed rest.

There are young and old people in our unit from all walks of life in Israel. Secular and Religious, soldiers aged 23 to 57, single men, married men, fathers of large and small families, even grandfathers -- all arrived for reserve duty with the common goal of protecting Israel. We are here from all walks of Israel’s society…there are students, blue collar workers, lawyers, tour-guides, rabbis, teachers, engineers, hi-tech managers, and some are unemployed, in-between a myriad of jobs.

Reserve duty in our area -- a forward combat zone, means we guard our outpost encampment in multiple locations 24 hours a day, we patrol the roads, set up road checkpoints, man pillbox towers along roads, and are responsible for stopping terrorist activity in our area…but our primary objective is to keep the Jewish settlements safe from terror. This Memorial Day and Independence Day we will be working more hours than usual, protecting the multiple ceremonies and celebrations…so that Israel remains safe. When our 24 days are complete, another reserve unit will take our place – and their commanders are already hard at work planning for the most professional and effective security plan.

This past Friday night, those of us who weren’t on a security shift sat down for Shabbat dinner. Everyone participated, regardless of where their level of religious observance happens to be. Our deputy company commander spoke for a few minutes about the weekly Torah reading…we ate, and sang Shabbat Zemirot songs for over an hour….Ashkenazi melodies overlapped and intertwined with Sephardi tunes, as everyone sang together.

The IDF is the army of the people.

Before my reserve duty, I picked up a small 2 volume set of books by Rav Yosef Tzvi Rimon, that discusses Jewish observance issues in the IDF. Over Shabbat I had the opportunity to read part of it, and I found this story particularly meaningful.

Rav Rimon quotes a story from Chief Rabbi Lau’s book, “Light of the World” (Oro shel Olam), page 380, and Rav Rimon says he also heard the same story from many other people as well.

“A student in the Kol Torah Yeshiva in Jerusalem, approached his Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach and asked him the question: May I leave my Torah studies in the yeshiva to go [for a short visit] and pray at the graves of tzadikim (righteous people,) in the Galil (Northern Israel?)

Rav Auerbach answered, “It is better to say in yeshiva, and study Torah”

The student replied, “Isn’t there a time I could go to visit the graves of tzadikim? Doesn’t Rav Auerbach go and pray by the graves of tzadikim?

Rav Auerbach answered, “In order to pray at the graves of tzadikim, one doesn’t have to travel up to the Galil. Whenevr I feel the need to pray at the graves of tzadikim, I go to Mount Herzel, [the national cemetery for fallen IDF soliders in Jerusalem], to the graves of the soliders…who fell “Al Kiddush Hashem” for the sanctification of G-d.”

This Yom Hazikaron, Israel Memorial Day, I urge you to take a few minutes to honor the memory of the brave IDF soldiers who fell in battle in the creation and ongoing struggle for the safety and security of the State of Israel. There are also many, many wounded soldiers and victims of Arab Terror who are also remembered on this day…and we need to remember them and their families.

There are those in captivity who cannot celebrate this Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day. IDF soldier Gilad Shalit is held captive by the PA’s partner, Hamas, denied visits by the Red Cross in gross violation of international law.

Lastly, we must thank the IDF soldiers in the regular army and the reserves, without them and G-d’s help, we would be over-run by Arab terror and Islamic jihad.

Despite the difficulty, both personal and sometimes ideological, I am proud to be able to serve in the IDF this Israel Memorial day and Independence day. May our Independence merit the full redemption of our people and the ingathering of the exiles.

Chag Sameach!

Israel Memorial Day in Toronto

For Muqata readers (and others) in the Toronto area, a friend of mine, Cheryl Mandel will speaking at the Central Yom Hazikaron/Yom Haatzmaut ceremony on Monday April 19th at 7:30 pm at the Shaarei Shomayim Synagogue on Glencairn road.

Please pass this invitation on to your family and friends in the Toronto area.

Cheryl will be speaking about her son Daniel who fell in the line of duty in the IDF. I heard her speak 3 years ago:

Daniel "a.k.a. Mendel the Platoon Commander” was killed in battle in Shechem (Nablus) on “Yod Gimel Nissan” at 5am as he led his elite IDF unit in an operation to capture three wanted Palestinian terrorists responsible for the deaths of at least thirty and the injury of over one hundred and forty Israelis.

Despite Mrs. Mandel's calm and quiet demeanor, her determination radiates to all.

"The terrorists won when they killed Daniel, but I won't give them the benefit of another "win" by getting to me as well", she said.

It saddened me to hear her say that, "When Daniel was killed in the line of duty as an IDF solider defending Israel, we were no longer olim chadashim...'new immigrants'...as we joined the ranks of Israelis as families of fallen soldiers."

I hope that everyone loses their oleh chadash status, without having to undergo such personal tragedy.

She summarized by saying that part of the training her son Daniel underwent, was the 110 kilometer "trek" that IDF soldiers in the Nachal Palsar unit have to run. While her son was not the strongest, he was given the task of carrying the "mag"...the machine gun, which weighs around 25 pounds. Daniel's commander told him, "Mandel, carry it," and he did. It was a very difficult task to run with a "mag"for 110 kilometers, yet he successfully finished the trek carrying it.

Cheryl Mandel likens that trek to her own; G-d, our commanding officer gave her the task of carrying the burden of her son's sacrifice on her trek through life.

Just as her son successfully completed his trek, she hopes to continue living her life (despite the unexpected task thrown her way) and moving forward optimistically, building the Land of Israel.

As this important day starts, please take a few minutes to view the following video (with English subtitles) about this one solider. While there are 22,500 other families and each one has their own story to tell, I would like to present this one tonight about Daniel Mandel.

More information about Daniel can be found at this website, daniel-mandel.co.il including his family's contact information.

Israel's Memorial Day

Israel's Memorial Day (Yom HaZikaron) is a day which is tangibly felt unlike every other day on the calendar.

The seriousness of the day is almost overwhelming as we remember the dedication and sacrifice of those who fought for Israel's existence, as well as those who were killed by Arab terror attacks for simply being in Israel.

Every fallen soldier or terror victim is a world of sacrifice and pain to their family and friends, and there isn't a person in Israel who doesn't personally know of someone affected. They walk among us daily within their world of personal, quiet pain, having sacrificed the most painful of all so that a Jewish State can exist today.

A friend of mine, Cheryl Mandel recollected about her son, Daniel Mandel who was killed in the line of duty. The video is below, and the story is here.

I'll post more links throughout the day within this post. Check back later.

1:59 PM For those that read Hebrew (I don't have time to translate this), the following article is a must read -- last night's memorial ceremony at Binyanei HaUma...and the song "Vhee Sh'amda" was sung by Yonatan Razel, students from Merkaz HaRav, and IDF Officer Aharon Karov who was critically wounded in the "Cast Lead" operation.

Karov stated, Above all our disagreements, we are brothers. Our enemies do not discern between the rightwing or leftwing. They believe we are one nation, which we are.

This is the song performed by Razel before Pesach.

Saluting our fallen and embracing their families,

Jameel.

Memorial Day: Mourn, Comfort and Remember

The air-raid siren's blare last night at 8:00 PM found me as I was driving home on the mountain roads of the Shomron.

I pulled over to the side of the road, turned on the car's hazard lights, got out and stood next to my car under the dark sky. Other cars also stopped, their driver's got out, and we stood silently listening to the siren.

So what do you think about during the siren? Once upon a time, I used to say tehillim to myself to honor the memory of the IDF soldiers who fell defending Israel. Yet the one minute siren is so short, many more thoughts last night reverberated in my head.

The first time I heard the siren in wartime was when the scuds fell in January 1991; wearing a gas mask and watching TV reports of where the Iraqi rockets landed....were they chemical or conventional warheads?

Sirens in Tzefat during the Lebanon war 2 years ago when Hizbollah Katyusha rockets landed around the clock, scorching the Galil.

A terror attack in Hevron's Mearat HaMachpela this past sukkot.

Soldiers who died fighting for Israel -- so many funerals in the past 17 years. Some soldiers I knew personally, some I admired from afar, others were fellow members of Kitot Konenuyot, the counter-terror units that respond to terror infiltrations.

And then there are the civilian casualties. Israel's Memorial Day also commemorates the victims of Arab terror; the bus bombings, stabbings, shootings, infiltrations, kidnappings, hijackings...the rocks and Molotov cocktails as well. Friends, neighbors, and strangers killed and wounded -- at the wrong place at the wrong time.

All those thoughts packed into instant.

The siren's wail ebbed away.

Israel's Fallen Heroes - One Personal Story

As Israel's afternoon sun slowly sets over Jerusalem, we prepare to commemorate Israel's Memorial Day, "Yom HaZikaron" -- the day we remember the approximately 22,500 who fell defending the Land of Israel since the 1860s when the Jewish people created the early neighborhoods outside the old city of Jerusalem.

The families of the fallen are everywhere, integrated into our lives in Israel. While we live our lives day after day, often, we aren't even aware of those who carry this burden along with them.

Today, I heard Mrs. Cheryl Mandel speak about her son, Daniel.

Tonight, we remember those who fell defending Eretz Yisrael, and how through their sacrifice, we are able to continue living, building, and rebuilding our homeland.

Please remember them in your tefillot, learning, and positive actions.

Shavua Tov,

Jameel.
