Nefesh B'Nefesh is at it again!
Here's the thought process.
Birthright (Taglit) is supposed to create a connection for unconnected Jews to Israel and the Jewish people. Statistics seem to indicate it's working (duh, of course its working, who can visit Israel and not be affected or feel connected).

Israel's National Bird Chosen!
Over 155,000 thousand Israelies voted to chose Israel's national bird, which was announced yesterday.Only a few votes decided tipped the scales for the winning bird, the Hooppe, as Israel's national bird. (photo credit, Israel Fichman)
Israel's President Shimon Peres, who announced the winning bird said, "today more than ever we need green scenery, fresh air, and the beautiful, multi-colored birds that flock here." He added that "ornithology is one of the main assets of our small country." The president also remarked that 500 million birds pass through Israel's skies annually. "For such a small country, that's a world record," he concluded. (YNET)

Ehud Barak's hypocrisy
None of Barak’s sordid history, of course, has deterred him from pontificating against Olmert today, demanding that Olmert resign or suspend himself. Nor do the media seem to have noticed the incredible irony and hypocrisy in Barak assuming the mantle of Mr. Clean with regard to a matter involving illegal cash transfers and money laundering. What a surprise.
For background and details on the Barak money laundering scandal, here are a few articles from the time of the release of the 2000 Comptroller's Report:
- Mr Barak and the millionaire car dealer who funded his victory
- Barak party told it is under inquiry over its finances
- The Prime Minister and the Amutot

Mail to the States?

Muqatonomics: Israel's a Rich Country
The most prolific Orthodox Jewish blog on economic issues in the JBlogosphere is by far Orthonomics.Understandably, the majority of the issues she raises relate to economics in the United States -- so a service to all, I present a special Muqatonomics (tm) edition on the economics of living in Israel.
As my father-in-law loves to remind me, Israel is a rich country.
Everything costs more here.
Well, not exactly -- there's Jewish education which is still much more inexpensive here in Israel, but many more staples are more expensive.
What I'd like to understand is why an Israeli snack food, "Nish Nash", (known in Israel as "Nishnushim") is manufactured in Israel, sold in stores in Israel, yet costs 3 times more in Israel than via Amazon in the United States?!
In Israel -- the 300gm package costs 13.39 NIS in the store (and on the Blue Square WebSite, they have a special, buy one, get the second half price, but the 19 NIS minimum shipping boosts the price up, so we'll ignore the "special" for now...the identical equivalent if you want to see it yourself is נישנושים זעתר בייגל בייגל 300 גרם -- use נישנושים as the product loookup word)
In the USA -- on Amazon, you can buy 2 twelve-packs of the same product for $32.46 (using the $10 bonus coupon offer "BEIGEL05") and you are entitled to free shipping! $32.46 for 24 packs comes out to $1.35 (or 4.49 NIS at today's 3.32 exchange rate).
13.39 NIS in Israel
4.49 NIS in the USA
Why does it cost 3 times more in Israel?
Simple. We're a rich country.

Wow. I am stunned by the amazing strategic and tactical skills of our political and military echelons.
Israeli sources are saying that PA troops in the West Bank are now well trained and it isn't guaranteed that Hamas will immediately defeat them when the IDF pulls out and hands over "security".
Of course, the same source says that the PA hasn't really done anything real to fight terror and the terrorists (as we define the term, though in terms of PA troops attacking and killing Israeli civilians, they're doing quite fine).
(My sources say they are still poorly trained and aren't ready to fight Hamas if they actually wanted to).
While a minor (actually almost no) uproar was created when it was announced that the IDF will be moving one of its southern bases out of the Gaza missile range, they've now gone even one step further.
Welcome to Southern Lebanon in Southern Israel.
The IDF (and government) has decided that it can't defend the crossing stations as-is, so they are considering creating a buffer zone of a few kilometers (like we had in Southern Lebanon).
They will move the crossings EASTWARD, and create the buffer zone OUTSIDE of Gaza.
I almost feel sorry for the settlements that will now find themselves inside the newly created Gaza buffer zone. Almost, because who told those settlers to move there in the first place?
So there you have it, Ehud Barak has managed to truly redefine IDF doctrine from top to bottom, and it can be summed up in two words, "RUN AWAY".

Remembering US Memorial Day
Last night during dinner I told my 12 year old daughter that it was Memorial Day weekend in the United States, and that Monday (today) was memorial day. She asked what "memorial day" meant, and I said, it's "Yom HaZikaron" for the Americans, remembering those who fought, were wounded, and died in America's wars. She asked what they do in America to commemorate it -- here in Israel, it's an extremely solemn day, with a nighttime and morning one minute long siren blast across the country, public eateries are closed, movie theaters are closed, all radio channels have reserved music, and most of the country is united in pain, remembrance and comforting the families of those who fought for Israel.
It was difficult, almost embarrassing to tell my daughter that for the majority of Americans, Memorial Day is mostly about shopping sales and a long vacation weekend. While there are some memorial ceremonies, the vast majority of Americans do not attend them.
The least I could do this Memorial Day, as an Israeli-American living in Israel, was to spend a few minutes writing about the sacrifice of America's soldiers and veterans -- and their families.
So how would I Google search for a picture? The obvious choice for me would be Arlington Memorial Cemetery. I was looking for of a photo of the solemn, seemingly endless rows of simple tombstones of America's soldiers. Yet while searching for the perfect blog picture, the photo (pictured above) hit me first. Taken last year at Arlington, Mary McHugh lies before the tombstone of her fiance.
I don't think she's running out to a sale or barbecue.
Perhaps America needs a national moment of silence and a wailing siren similar to Israel. The beauty and serenity of Virginia’s rolling hills and awe inspiring views of Washington D.C. clash with today’s reality of national loss, where grief is raw and in your face. You step over grass sods still taking root over freshly dug graves. You watch a mother kiss her son’s tombstone. Two soldiers put flowers and a cold beer next to the grave of a fallen buddy. A young son left a hand-written note for his dad. “I hope you like Heven, hope you liked Virginia very much hope you like the Holidays. I also see you every Sunday. Please write back!”
Section 60 is not about a troop surge or a war spending bill or whether we should be fighting these wars at all. It is about ordinary people trying to get through something so hard that most of us can’t ever imagine it. Everyone I met that afternoon had a gut-wrenching story to tell.
Mary McHugh is one of those people. She sat in front of the grave of her fiance James “Jimmy” Regan, talking to the stone. She spoke in broken sentences between sobs, gesturing with her hands, sometimes pausing as if she was trying to explain, with so much left needed to say.
Later on, after she spoke with a fellow mourner from a neighboring grave, I went over and introduced myself and told her I was photographing for Getty Images and had brought my family on our own pilgrimage to the site. I told her we had been living in Pakistan for the last few years, how we had come back to the States for a few months for the birth of our second child.
Mary told me about her slain fiance Jimmy Regan. Clearly, she had not only loved him but truly admired him. When he graduated from Duke, he decided to enlist in the Army to serve his country. He chose not to be an officer, though he could have been, because he didn’t want to risk a desk job. Instead, he became an Army Ranger and was sent twice to Aghanistan and Iraq - an incredible four deployments in just three years. He was killed in Iraq this February by a roadside bomb.
Mary said that they had planned to get married after Jimmy’s four years of service were up next year. “We loved each other so much,” she said. “We thought we had all of the time in the world.”
After a few moments more, my beautiful wife, Gretchen, now almost 9 months pregnant, walked over with our two-year-old Isabella. Our daughter started climbing over me, saying “daddy” in my ear and pulling on my arm to come walk with her. I felt awkward and guilty about the contrast, but if Mary felt it too, she was nothing but gracious and friendly. I told her that I would forward her some photos of her from that day if she would like and she gave me her email address. We said our goodbyes and I moved on with my family through the sea of graves.
Later on, I passed by and she was lying in the grass sobbing, speaking softly to the stone, this time her face close to the cold marble, as if whispering into Jimmy’s ear.
Some people feel the photo I took at the moment was too intimate, too personal. Like many who have seen the picture, I felt overwhelmed by her grief, and moved by the love she felt for her fallen sweetheart.
After so much time covering these wars, I have some difficult memories and have seen some of the worst a person can see - so much hatred and rage, so much despair and sadness. All that destruction, so much killing. And now, one beautiful and terribly sad spring afternoon amongst the rows and rows of marble stones - a young woman’s lost love.
I felt I owed the Arlington National Cemetery a little time - and I think I still do. Maybe we all do. (John Moore/Getty Image News Blog, Memorial Day 2007)
If you don't appreciate the sacrifice of your country's sons and daughters, do you really deserve the shopping sale?

One To Go
In the space of a few minutes, I heard of two separate (religious) individuals (one type O in Israel, one type A in the US) in their 20s looking to donate one of their kidneys to complete strangers.
I've never heard of this before, so upon hearing this, and learning that (at least) one of the individuals learns in a B”T yeshiva, two thoughts immediately came to mind, either this is a disturbing new cult trend, or the guy is trying to get over some major psychological guilt feelings he has from his past and figures this will help.
I admit it could be they are truly altruistic, and they see this as a natural and obvious outlet for their altruism, but that simply wasn’t among the first thought that crossed my mind.
It all sounded so strange, I started to do a little research.
It turns out that there is actually a Kidney Macher in the Jewish Community. A young woman name Chaya Lipschutz, who she herself donated a kidney to a complete stranger, and now is working hard to get other people to donate kidneys too. And there is a non-profit Jewish organization that is also involved in this called Renewal.
However, I am still personally having trouble contemplating the concept that someone might willingly and voluntarily give up a non-renewable piece of his or her body to a complete stranger. I’m sorry if you all now think less of me, but I simply can’t get my mind around it, even if it is clear that they are saving the life of someone with their actions.
I’m also aware that some readers here will take exception to what I am writing after either donating or receiving a kidney themselves (or knowing someone that did), or because they see only the positive side to the story.
I will whole-heartedly agree that it is clearly an incredible mitzvah to perform, and you are clearly changing and saving the life of the recipient.
So let’s hear what you have to say, because my first reaction when hearing these stories was that something is wrong with these people, while the initial reaction of the person who told me the stories was only the highest of praise.
If you want to read about this (the subject, not the specific people that I heard about) in more detail go to the article on the Aish site.

Torah for Women
Sometimes people forget, but the women were standing around Har Sinai too! (I bet you didn't know that).
I wasn't sure at first if you call it a Yeshiva, a Seminary, a Jewish Center for Advance Learning, or a Midrasha (apparently Midrasha is the right term), but Nishmat definitely has programs for any Woman who wants to learn Torah.
Nishmat has been around for a while, but I recall they really gained attention when they started their Women's Halachic Hotline and program for Yoatzot (primarily women Halachic experts for women related Halachic questions - that makes sense to me).
This summer (July 1 to July 22) they are running a series of summer programs for all levels of Jewish women, from beginners to very advanced, and for all ages too. And of course they have their year round, regular post-high school programs, as well as full and part-time learning programs for adults.
The summer program also includes some "Israel Experiences" such as Shabbatonim and Tiyulim.
So all you women reading this blog, go check out Nishmat because this is your opportunity to really learn something.
And if you're a guy, have I got a Shidduch for you. (OK, that was totally out of place, but I couldn't resist.)

Hamas Secret Service
This newly released video from Hamas provides a rare (probably first time) glimpse into the way the Hamas Secret Service protects (or doesn't) Gaza Prime Minister Isma'eel Haniyeh.
This assassination attempt against Haniyeh, by PA forces, loyal to Muhammad Abbas occurred at the Rafiah Crossing -- and it appears about 4,5 minutes into the video. I'm amazed at the way things just drag on while the gunfire continues. Hopefully, the rest of their military is just as inefficient, but they are learning fast...

Olmert plays his "get out of jail free" card
The Prime Minister's Office announced Wednesday that Israel and Syria have launched direct negotiations in Turkey. This morning's radio talk shows, newspapers and TV news were all about Olmert's impending demise as Prime Minister. Elections talk was in the air, Tzippy Livni was ironing her suit, and it seemed absolute that Olmert would resign in shame, after the High Court of Justice rejected Tuesday Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's appeal against the State Prosecutor's request for a pre-trial deposition by Morris Talansky, the key witness in the corruption probe against the PM. (YNET)
Ynet has learned that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's associates, Yoram Turbowitz and Shalom Turgeman, have been meeting with senior Syrian officials in Ankara since Monday.
A dramatic statement issued simultaneously in Jerusalem, Damascus and Ankara said that "Israel and Syria have launched peace talks mediated by Turkey. (YNET)
Despite the spam mail circulating on the internet, in which Olmert requests your assistance to help retain his fortune, his latest tactic of using a "peace" deal with Syria is bound to make the peace-hungry Israeli establishment quickly forget about any wrongdoings Olmert may have committed.
5 hours ago, political eulogies were written for Olmert.
Now he's eying Noble Peace Prizes.

Arab Army returns to Gush Etzion
Makor Rishon reports that Defense Minister Ehud Barak has approved the opening of 2 "Palestinian National Security Forces" Police Stations in Gush Etzion, one in Sa'ir and one in the Arab village of Tekoa .Each station will have 10 "policemen" -- 5 armed with semi-automatic handguns, and 5 armed with fully automatic AK-47 Kalashnikov assault rifles.
The IDF spokesman responded:
"The opening of the Palestinian Police Station in Sair and in Arab Tekoa are approved within the framework of opening 20 Palestinian Police Stations in the Central Region. Their activies will be under the supervision of the IDF. The Tekoa station is not located on the Gush Etzion/Dead Sea road because the station is inside the village -- the policemen inside are only permitted to uphold public order within the village. The weapons are only for self defense from Palestinian law-breakers and for the policemen to carry out their duties"At this point, I would like to remind the Jewish residents of Gush Etzion, that many of the recent terror activities in the West Bank were carried out by these Palestinian Authority "policemen" (and officers) who were under the supervision of the IDF, and who were only supposed to use their weapons in "self-defense."
Some that come to mind:
The murder of Ido Zolden -- a resident of the settlement of Shavei Shomron, who was driving on road 55 toward the settlement of Kedumim in the northern West Bank on November 19, 2007 when terrorists in a passing vehicle opened fire, critically wounding him. Haaretz reminds us that "according to information released for publication Sunday night, the attack was carried out by three Palestinians, members of Palestinian National Security force.
Not far from Gush Etzion, Ahikam Amihai and David Rubin were killed in a terror attack on Friday, December 28, 2007 when they were hiking near Hebron. Again, Haaretz informs us that The terrorists who carried out Friday's shooting attack near the West Bank city of Hebron, killing two Israelis, were both employed by the Palestinian Authority, according to information made public yesterday. They were all members of the Palestinian national security forces.
You can see in the picture above what the "policemen" look like -- they carry AK47's and are all members of the Palestinian Authority "national security forces".
Policemen? Soldiers? Terrorists?
Time to start wearing shachpatzim (bullet proof vests) again.

Urgent Email from Olmert
Got this by email a few minutes ago...
---------- Forwarded message ----------
Date: Tue, May 20, 2008 at 5:20 PM
Subject: urgent
To: Jameel Rashid <muqata@gmail.com>
From: PM Ehud Olmert
Greetings from Jerusalem
Before I introduce myself, I wish to inform you that this letter is not a hoax mail and I urge you to treat it serious. We want to transfer to overseas account (30,000.000 NIS) Thirty million New Israeli Shekels from a prime Bank here in Israel. I want to ask you, if you are not capable to quietly look for reliable and honest person who will be capable and fit to provide either an existing bank account or to set up a new Bank a/c immediately to receive this money, even an empty a/c can serve to receive this money, as long as you will remain honest to me till the end for this important business trusting in you and believing in God that you will never let me down either now or in future.
I am PM Ehud Olmert, presently the Prime Minister of Israel. Potentially in the course of an audit next week, it will be discovered that I have a floating fund in an account opened in the bank in 1990, in which I regularly deposited envelopes full of cash. I discovered that with the audit next week, if I do not get this money out urgently it will be forfeited for nothing.
The official owner of this account is my wife Aliza, a great artist and a resident of Jerusalem, who unfortunately never had any art skills, and it shows it what she produces.
While we would have claimed that the deposits were for artwork, no one believes that any more, as who would actually by her crap. No other person knows about this account or anything concerning it - yet.
The total amount involved is Thirty million New Israeli Shekels only [30,000.000.00 NIS] and we wish to transfer this money into safe foreigners account abroad. But while I know many foreigners who give me money, I don't know any foreigner who will keep their mouth shut; I am only contacting you as a foreigner because this money cannot be approved to a local person here, but to a foreigner who has information about the account, which I shall give to you upon your positive response. I am revealing this to you with believe in God that you will never let me down in this business, you are the first and the only person that I am contacting for this business, so please reply urgently so that I will inform you the next step to take urgently.
At the conclusion of this business, you will be given 40% of the total amount, 50% will be for us while 10% will be for the expenses both parties may incurred during this transaction. PLEASE, TREAT THIS PROPOSAL AS TOP SECRET.
I look forward to your earliest reply
Best Regards,
PM Ehud Olmert

The Closing of Volozhin; Jewish Urban Legend?
Cross-Posted to DovBear
In May 1988, looking for a donation, the Lakewood Cheder School sent me a copy of the book, "My Uncle the Netziv" -- written by R' Baruch HaLevi Epstein (author of the Torah Temima) and nephew of the Netziv. The book was adapted into English by R' Moshe Dombey and under the general editorship of Artscroll Mesorah Rabbis and Publishers Nosson Sherman and Meir Zlotowitz. The book's jacket states, "This is the sort of book that cannot -- and should not -- be put down."
I enjoyed the book at the time, and found the life and times of the Netziv to be an interesting read. A few months later the Lakewood Cheder School sent me a bizarre letter (pictured at left) in which they sincerely apologized for sending me such an offensive book. They insisted the book not be read -- and they even offered to refund any donation I may have sent them.
Why was the book recalled and banned? What was so terrible in the book that caused such a radical reaction from Lakewood? The recall letter was rather vague about what was wrong with the book, but as a teenager I realized if they were recalling the book, it was worth keeping.
There are a few possibilities for the ban, but in my opinion there are 2 primary reasons.
1. Background into the closing of Volozhin
2. Women and Learning. (I wont address this point in this post).
Concerning "worldliness" of the students of Volozhin, and the value of secular education at Volozhin, R' Epstein writes:
Anyone with eyes in his head could see that the students of Volozhin were quite knowledgeable in secular studies: they took an interest in science, history and geography and knew many languages. In fact, those students who desired to pursue these disciplines succeeded in learning twice as much as any student at a state institution. In Volohzin, Torah and derech eretz walked hand in hand, neither one held captive by the other. It was the special achievement of the Volozhin student that when he left the yeshiva, he was able to converse with any man in any social setting on the highest intellectual plane. The Volohzin student was able to conquer both worlds -- the world of Torah and the world at large. A well-known adage among parents who were trying to best educate their children was, "Do you want your child to develop into a complete Jew, dedicated to Torah and derech eretz? Do you want him to be able to mingle with people and get along in the world? Send him to Volozhin! (page 204)R' Epstein debunks the story that college and Volozhin could not mix, by stating -- in direct contradiction to the chareidi myth -- that the Netziv explicitly agreed to the introduction of secular studies to Volozhin at the 1887 Petersburg Congress, by incorporating the study of mathematics and the Russian language within the framework of the yeshiva program. The amount of time and part of day when these 2 subjects were to be taught was left entirely to the discretion of the Rosh Yeshiva. This continued for 5 full years prior to the yeshiva's closing in 1892. (pages 207, 208)
So what did college have to do with the closing of the Yeshiva? Assuming we accept the premise that the yeshiva was indeed closed over something connected to "secular studies", R' Epstein explains what was actually proposed, which caused his uncle to close the yeshiva.
On the twenty second of October 1891, the Minister of Education certified a system of changes to be established in the Volozhin Yeshiva, four of which struck at its main life-giving arteries and imperiled its existence. They consisted of the following:The point of the maskilim, who pressed the issue in the first place to the Russian government, was to close the yeshiva -- and in the week of Parashat Bo, 1892, the yeshiva was closed.
1. The general studies program shall take place between nine o'clock in the morning and three in the afternoon.
2. There shall be no [yeshiva] studies at night at which time the yeshiva building shall be closed.
3. The entire study program shall be no longer than ten hours per twenty four hour period.
4. The Rosh yeshiva and all the instructors shall possess an educational degree.
The result of all this was that during the winter months no time at all would remain for studying the Talmud. Even in the summer, considering that the general studies program would finish at three in the afternoon followed by lunch, only minimal time would remain for Torah study. The students would also be exhausted from 5 or 6 hours of general studies, and thus the best hours of the day would have been wasted.
It is clear that these conditions, capped by the impossible demand that every single teacher from the Rosh yeshiva down to the instructor of the lowest shiur, have a degree, left my uncle with very little choice. "Under these conditions what do I need the yeshiva for and for what does the yeshiva need me? This will no longer be a yeshiva but a school. Aren't there enough schools in this country already? (pages 206-207)
R' Epstein's version of the story leaves little room for misinterpretation. The Netziv was not anti-secular studies, the students of Volozhin studied (at least) mathematics and Russian within the scope of the Volozhin curriculum, and the closing of the yeshiva was due to the outrageous order reducing yeshiva studies to a bare minimum (or none), with secular studies taking up the vast majority of the students' time.
While the majority of this posting is based on the actual book "My Uncle the Netziv", I came across some additional sources and good additional reading material as well:
Sources:
My Uncle the Netziv, Chapter 13, "An Act of Satan", pages 206-209.
Additional Reading:
Founding (1803) and Closure (1892) of Yeshivat Etz Hayyim of Volozhin. Michtavim Blog, Menachem Butler
"Haskalah, Secular Studies, and the close of Yeshiva of Volozhin in 1892", YU Torah, by Dr. Jacob J, Schachter
In closing, I must quote from Menachem Butler's post about a newly researched twist on the entire story...
Professor Shaul Stampfer of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem discusses "The Closing of the Yeshiva of Volozhin" [Hebrew], in his Hebrew-University-dissertation-turned-volume, Ha-Yeshivah ha-Lita'it be-Hithavutah (Jerusalem: Merkaz Zalman Shazar, 1st ed., 1995; 2nd ed., 2005), 208-250, with an appendix to chapter eight published in the updated (2005) edition on pages 251-266, including a half-dozen never-before-published correspondences from newly available sources from Russian government archives (and he reprints a [Russian] document on page 253), in Hebrew translation, pointing that the closure was related to "in-fighting" (my wording) amongst the administration of Yeshivat Etz Hayyim, rather than simply a disagreement over the government inclusion of secular studies into the institutional curriculum.

8 Seconds at an IDF Checkpoint
Location: Chawara IDF Checkpoint, Road 60
IDF Unit: Nachal Brigade
Situation: Routine checks on Palestinian population for weapons.
The following is based on a radio interview this morning on IDF radio (Galei Tzahal) between the checkpoint commander and Radio interviewer, Razi Barkai.
The checkpoint commander is a 22 year old officer from the Nachal Brigade -- his unit took over the checkpoint for the first time yesterday. Corporal Michal Ya'akov, from the IDF military police is also assigned to the checkpoint. The checkpoint commander said the following incident lasted 8 seconds.
Start your clock now
A "16 year old" (that's about how old he looked) Palestinian approaches the IDF checkpoint.
1 second
Michal notices "he seems very nervous...was looking from side to side....his shirt looked bulky."
2 seconds
He goes through the metal detector and it beeps. Michal asks what is under his shirt.
3 seconds
He raises his shirt, displaying 3 pipe bombs strapped to it.
4 seconds
Michal yells out, "Explosives in the Checkpoint", and all soldiers immediately follow the protocol for a terrorist at the checkpoint. The checkpoint commander, about 10 feet away, instinctively chambers a round into his M16 and aims it at the youth's head.
5 seconds
Michal yells at the Palestinian youth to keep his hands high over his head.
6 seconds
His hands waver.
7 seconds
He lowers his hands towards the pipe bombs strapped to his chest.
The checkpoint commander fires, shooting the terrorist directly in the head.
8 seconds
The terrorist starts to fall to the ground, with his hands still reaching for the pipe bomb. Checkpoint commander fires another 3 rounds into the terrorist's head -- taking special care not to shoot at the body of the terrorist, but only the head, to prevent the pipe bombs from exploding.
Final Result; One Dead Terrorist. No injuries to IDF soldiers. No terror attack against Israelis.
Eight Seconds; it could have ended very differently.
For an article with slightly less accuracy than the above post (based directly on the radio interview with the checkpoint commander), here's the way YNET reported it.

Seeing through the Fog
Yet every time I see this friend, she has a huge smile on her face and tells me how God is in the details of everything and how fortunate they are that their son's injuries were so minor.
"He only broke his leg and his jaw...and his jaw is wired shut, but it's all for the best."
She thanks me when I put up posts on my blog that could strengthen one's faith, and tell me to ignore cynical commenters. I saw her the other day, and again with this huge smile on her face she tells me, "You can't imagine what a miracle it was that my son was hit by a car and broke his jaw..."
I smile back and say, "I'm glad he's getting better."
But then she adds, "No, you don't understand, if he HADN'T been hit by the car, and broken his jaw, he wouldn't have had a CAT scan, and then we wouldn't have found out about the tumor in his head! Thank G-d it's operable, but can you imagine if we didn't find it now...?"

The Lost Sandal - 1000 days have passed.
40.2 percent of the Gaza evacuees are still waiting for lots on which to build their new homes.
43% - 586 families - have received housing lots and can now [May 2008] start construction.
Ex-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and the Israeli government promised that the resettlement process would take up to two years, and promised on the SELA eviction website [though not anymore] and in paid advertisements that there was a "solution for each settler."
The blatant callousness of the Israeli government and of Disengagement supporters who do not spend every second of their days trying to help the solve the refugee problem they created is simply mind-numbing.
One thousand days have passed.
Helping children cope is a new book, "Eyal's Sandal," written by Ruth Etzion, previously from the Katif community of Morag and illustrated by Sarit Stern. A young boy, Eyal loses a sandal when playing on the sand dunes near his home in Gush Katif. His faithful sandals always waited as a pair for him while he played in the sand dunes, so it can't be far. However, the Disengagement dashes his hopes to find his lost sandal, as he and his family are removed from Gush Katif and his sandal.
The book poignantly describes the difficulties in living in Gush Katif prior to the Disengagement, the trials of a child trying to come to grips with a difficult future, "Abba, are the same soldiers who I love so much going to be the ones throwing us out of our home?"
Despite it all, the book ends optimistically. Even if your family didn't go through the Disengagement, this book is a must for every Jewish family to understand what their fellows Jews went through, and are going through today.
I translated the Hebrew from a page of the book -- the Hebrew rhymes and is extremely well written. My translation does not rhyme and is for those who can't read Hebrew at all...

Eli Cohen: Our Hero in Damascus
Today's Hebrew Date marks 43 years since the death of Israel's Master Spy, Eli Cohen. In his last letter to his wife (pictured at left) he writes:"My Dearest Nadia, dear family,
I write these last words in the hope that you will always remain together. I request from my wife that you forgive me, take care of yourself, and provide a good education for our children. The day will come when my children will be proud of me, and you dear Nadia, you are permitted to remarry another man to be a good father for our children. In this matter, you are completely free [to marry whoever you wish]. I beg you not to mourn what has happened but to look towards the future. I send you my last kisses. Please pray for my soul.
Eli"
From the Eli Cohen Memorial WebSite:
"One of the most memorable and daring attempts to infiltrate Syria, which at the time controlled the Golan Heights and frequently shelled the Israeli settlers down below is that of Eliahu ben Shaoul Cohen an Egyptian born Jew.This movie trailer is based on Eli Cohen's life and death, "The Impossible Spy"
Eliahu ben Shaoul Cohen, worked as a Mossad agent in Damascus, Syria under the alias of Kamal Amin Ta'abet from 1962 until his exposure and execution on May 18, 1965. Cohen was able to supply considerable details on Syrian political and military matters because of his strong interpersonal skills and abilities to build close ties with business, military, and Ba'ath Party leaders, and Syrian President Amin el Hafiz. He was hanged in Martyr's Square with the television cameras rolling for the entire world to see.
Eli was privy to secrets of the Syrian elite including those of national security. Eli was considered to be named the Syrian Deputy Minister of Defense. He was the only civilian to receive private tours of military installations, even being photographed in the then Syrian controlled Golan Heights with high ranking Syrian officials looking over into Israel.
As a result Eli sent highly informative reports back to Israel detailing the Syrian water deviation project and each and every one of the outposts on the Golan, including tank traps designed to impede any Israeli attack.
Eli's influence on Syrian officials helped Israel beyond measure. Eli suggested that the Syrians plant trees on the Golan near each of their fortifications. Based on the eucalyptus trees, Israel knew exactly where the Syrian fortifications were.
Two years after his death, in June 1967, the intelligence Eli Cohen provided enabled Israel to capture the Golan Heights in two days as part of Israel's victory in the Six Days War.
Eli Cohen was the greatest Mossad agent Israel has ever known. He was greatly admired by all, including the Syrians. His deeds fed and are still feeding the imagination and fantasy of many. He is a hero who sacrificed his life for the sake of Israel, his fellow Jews, his children and his family.
Hashem Yikom Damo, May G-d Avenge his Death.

Israeli Survivor
Over 46% of Jewish Israeli households watched the final moments of the show to see who the winner of "Survivor" was last night at 11:30 PM (something like over 1.3 million people)
The show doesn't deserve to be written about, I will just make 2 points.
The winner of the show, "Naama" Kesari left a few month old infant to participate in the show for over 52 days. She also left her dying father...and he in fact died not long after she returned home to Israel from the "Caribbeans Island" where most of the show was filmed. (It was reported through the season by different newspapers that the contestants weren't really "alone" on a deserted island, and in some pictures one could make out homes in the background)
I can understand men or women who have to leave home for business trips, but to participate in a reality TV show leaving a baby at home and a dying father? What sort of woman throws away the last few months of her father's life or the importance of being with her child, to participate on a TV show for a chance to win a jeep and a few thousand dollars?
The judges (the losing contestants) voted her as the best survivor, throwing out a nasty lawyer "Dan" who lied to everyone left and right to get to the end. It's not surprising that he is already talking about going into politics in Israel.
Is this trash TV program a reflection of Israeli society? A group of fellow citizens who had "gone overseas, split into groups, run around in bathing suits, plotted, lied, avoided showers and put snakes and ticks in their hair" -- along with eating snakes and killing chickens for fun? (Haaretz)
Who is in the Knesset today? Liers, theives and political prostitutes, many who abandoned their party platform of the Likud to carry out the Disengagement -- throwing close to ten thousand Jews out of their homes. Their reality continues every day, with unemployment at over 50%, and more than 90% without permanent housing solutions. They were democratically thrown off the island into shark infested waters that continue to harass them daily.
While the finalists of Israeli Survivor many not be Kadima's politicians of tomorrow, Shimon Peres and Ehud Olmert's government need to stop treating the State of Israel as a reality show.
I guess we've survived worse.

More Cults?!
We've seen the Burka women in Ramat Beit Shemesh, we've heard about Eliyahu Chen, and now..."Megirot."
Kudos to MominIsrael for translating this story on Erev Shabbat and posting it. I never would have found the time. YNET and others have said this for a while (over 2 years ago), but I guess Makor Rishon got around to it now.
Next on the cult list: Agel and the Fly-Lady.
Shabbat Shalom.

Questions on my mind
Question: President Bush is currently visiting Israel, snarling up traffic in all directions. He came with an entourage of dozens of cars, trucks, jeeps, and 6 helicopters. How did all this stuff get here?
Answer: Galaxy C-5 transport planes landed at Ben-Gurion airport last week. Here's are some pictures of what this massive plane looks like.

Hah. They call this a landing. Crosswinds? El-Al pilots laugh at cross winds...
Question: Where was yesterday's rocket attack in Ashkelon launched from?
Answer: The remains of Dugit -- A settlement destroyed and evacuated during the Disengagement, 8.08 miles (as the missile flies) from the Shopping Mall in Ashkelon.

Party On?
Should Israel's leadership have gone to Ashkelon to comfort its residents or convened an emergency session with the IDF on how to provide minimal security for Israel? Or should they have continued, "business as usual" with the dinner, heaping lavish superlatives on George Bush and the United States insisting "the party must go on?"
Driving home, I listed to Shimon Peres' speech last night at the dinner party over the radio. Despite his initial mention of the terror attack, his speech was rosy and euphoric. Not mentioning Israel's missing soldiers in Gaza and Lebanon, Peres glowed as he addressed world leaders. VIPs and wealthy businessmen. The crowd cheered and clapped with his every mention of Sederot, the IDF, and America's friendship, specifically that of George Bush. There was only one statement that left the crowd strangely silent, "We have not lost our will for peace."
No one clapped, no one cheered.
The more the daily reality of Palestinian terror and violence contrasts with Shimon Peres' view of Middle East peace, the more his resolve and ideology is strengthened. It's almost Messianic. Sedeort? Ashkelon? Suicide Bombers? Gaza?
Forget yesterday. Ignore today. Let's look for tomorrow.
Dreams can be achieved through pragmatism yet the Peres dream for peace is based on fantasy.
While Peres and Olmert continue to party, the rest of us are mourning the dead and praying for a full recovery for our wounded.
Party on? I'll pass.
24 year old Adi Afgin, has requested that people pray for the recovery of his wife and 2 year old daughter who were both seriously wounded in yesterday's rocket attack in Ashkelon.
His 2 year old daughter's name is "Ta'eer bat Avital" and his wife's name is "Avital bat Penina"

Invitation: laying cornerstone for A NEW JEWISH TOWN IN SHDEMA
For all those that want to know how Jameel knows about the cool events that no one else know about. You hereby are all notified in advance of this cool event.
Invitation: laying cornerstone for A NEW JEWISH TOWN IN SHDEMA
BETWEEN HAR CHOMA AND EASTERN GUSH ETZION
When: tomorrow -- THURSDAY MAY 15th, 2008
You -- and also of course President Bush and his entire entourage -- are cordially invited to the laying of the cornerstone to a new Jewish city "Shdema". Shdema will be built on the exact location where the IDF army base "Shdema" used to be. The Shdema army camp was abandoned by the IDF and by the Israeli government as part of Olmert-Livni's plan to build an Arab city there. Shdema is located south of Har Choma, on the new Eastern Gush Etzion- Jerusalem road. Only an insane government that has no qualms abandoning its citizens to Arab terror can come up with such an outrageous idea as building the enemy new cities in strategical locations, thus endangering the lives of Jews in Jerusalem and Gush Etzion.
Even if you cannot come, please help by faxing this invitation STRAIGHT to President Bush's hotel. Fax number is below.
PROGRAM for THURSDAY MAY 15th, 2008 (details: 0505-500834 – 0505-777254- 02-9961292- 0505246770)
* Leaving from Kiryat Arba-Hebron at 8:30 am, Efrat southern gate at 8:45 am, Tekoa main gate at 9:00 am,
Har Choma (from police station) at 9:00am.
* Laying of Cornerstone by MK Prof. Arieh Eldad and the Rabbi of Nokdim. Tour of Shdema. Painting and cleaning of abandoned buildings. Lectures by Rabbi Sharbaf from Hevron and Attn Elyakim Haetzni.
* Approximate return: 1:00pm
FRIDAY MAY 16th: TOURING SHDEMA AND SURROUNDINGS
8:30 am bus will leave Kiryat Arba. 9:00 am bus will leave Efrat
Thanks: to Women in Green and other groups -- for organizing this appropriate and moving event!
Please fax this invitation directly to President Bush at his hotel. He needs to feel that many people are inviting him -- the whole Israeli public, in fact.
FAX NUMBER OF US PRESIDENT GEORGE BUSH'S HOTEL IN ISRAEL - 2 numbers: 02-6208880 02-6208882 -- IF BUSY, TRY AGAIN, hotel desk operates 24 hours a day so perhaps try late at night
IF FAX LINE SEEMS NOT TO BE WORKING, CALL THE KING DAVID HOTEL 972-2-6208888 AND REQUEST THAT THE FAX-LINE BE CHECKED.
YOUR FAX'S FIRST LINE SHOULD READ: "PLEASE DELIVER THIS FAX TO YOUR GUEST, US PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH"

Asia Times Ranks Israel as the Happiest Country!
I will admit, I don't fully understand how their research determines the "happiness quotient" using graphs that plot fertility rate versus the suicide rate of 35 industrial countries (the proportion of people who choose to create new life against the proportion who choose to destroy their own.)However, they conclude Israel stands alone, positioned in the upper-left-hand-quadrant, or life-loving, portion of the chart. עם לבדד ישכון -- Am Livadad Yiskon; Israel dwells alone among the nations....
Explaining their rationale, the Asia Times states:
In a world given over to morbidity, the state of Israel still teaches the world love of life, not in the trivial sense of joie de vivre, but rather as a solemn celebration of life. In another location, I argued, "It's easy for the Jews to talk about delighting in life. They are quite sure that they are eternal, while other peoples tremble at the prospect impending extinction. It is not their individual lives that the Jews find so pleasant, but rather the notion of a conventional life that proceeds uninterrupted through the generations." Still, it is remarkable to observe by what wide a margin the Israelis win the global happiness sweepstakes. The funny thing is, if you would tell this to any Israeli on the street, they would laugh in your face (but at least they would laugh). In the proper tradition of Jewish humor deep-rooted in cynicism, we may not be the happiest country, but we're definitely one of the most cynical (we'd still give you the the shirt off our back)
Enclosed is a photo montage of some 60 years of Israeli cynicism...
Warning: Baby on board [intel inside?]Finally...request for mercy from parking police that the car is a loaner,
and the original car (getting fixed) is permitted to park here.

Deciphering Samaritan
On Thursday of hol haMoed Pesah, my family and I joined Jameel for a trip to the Samaritan community on Har Greizim, where we were given a fascinating tour of the Samaritan museum, and got a glimpse of a Samaritan synagogue. You can see some of the videos and photos that Jameel shot here and here.
My kids were curious about what was written on the various signs and inscriptions in the synagogue. I figured that if I took the time to sit and decipher them, I might find some interesting things. I wasn’t disappointed. It occurred to me that others might be interested too, so I’m sharing them here.
To interpret the text, I used this document ( a proposal for inclusion of the Samaritan alphabet in Unicode, accepted a few weeks ago), written by Michael Everson and Mark Shoulson. (Mark Shoulson, by the way, is an expert in Samaritan and Klingon – he is Assistant Director of the Klingon Language Institute, and once translated sefer Yonah into Klingon.)
First, let's take a look at the inscriptions above the doorway of the synagogue. (Click on the picture to see a higher resolution image.) These are verses from the Torah, placed above the doorway in accordance with the Samaritans' literal interpretation of the commandment "וּכְתַבְתָּם עַל מְזֻזוֹת בֵּיתֶךָ וּבִשְׁעָרֶיךָ" ("And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house and on your gates") [Devarim 6:9 and Devarim 11:20]. The “mezuza” above the outer entrance contains two psukim, the top one in larger letters, and the lower one in smaller. The two verses are Shemot 25:8, and Shemot 20:20, both of which turn out to be good illustrations of the differences between the Samaritan text of the Torah, and our own Masoretic Text. For both verses, I show the Samaritan version as it appears on the synagogue’s “mezuza” above labeled as ש, and the Masoretic version below labeled as מ. The differences in the Samaritan text are highlighted:
- “Mezuza” engraving above outer entrance, top:
ש ועשו לי מקדש ושכנתי בתוככם
מ ועשו לי מקדש ושכנתי בתוכ ם
[שמות כ"ה:ח']
- “Mezuza” engraving above outer entrance, bottom:
ש ובמקום אשר אזכרתי את שמי, שם אבוא אליך וברכתיך
מ בכל המקום אשר אזכיר את שמי, אבוא אליך וברכתיך
[שמות כ':כ']
My 13-year-old daughter astutely pointed out that the difference in 20:20 is probably a subtle reflection of the Samaritans’ belief in the centrality of Har Greizim.
- Stylized golden flame design beside outer entrance:
שמע ישראלI found this particularly interesting. This is exactly the same sort of text-as-artwork design one often finds in modern Jewish synagogues – with the twist that this uses Samaritan paleo-Hebrew script instead of modern Hebrew. (Image at right added by Jameel.)
- Golden menora plaque [“mezuza”?] above inner entrance:
מנורת אור
[?]
Now let's see what's on the synagogue's bulletin board. (Click for a higher resolution image.)

- Bulletin board, top right [chart]:
פסח
[?]
חושך
ארבה
מצות
These seem to be decorative, Pesah-related words superimposed over the chart, which I suspect is a schedule for the korban Pesah.
Also, get a load of the Samaritan letter samekh (or singaat, as they call it) in the word "פסח" ("Pesah"). It looks like a hieroglyphic bird, or one of the letters in Dr. Seuss’ On Beyond Zebra. (See here, particularly the letter glikk [U+E635] J )
- Bulletin board, bottom right:
[סמל מדינת ישראל]
…
חג שמח וכשר ]באותיות אשוריות]
…
This appears to be an official letter of holiday greetings from an Israeli government ministry. At the top is the official emblem of the State of Israel, and in the text of the letter, most of which seems to be in Samaritan script, you can see the words “Hag sameah v’kasher” (“A joyous and kosher holiday”) in modern Hebrew letters.
- Bulletin board, top middle:
שנת
3646 = ישראלי
5767 יהודהי
1428 ישמעאלי
2007 נוצרי
This lists the numbers of the current year (or last year, actually) on the Samaritan, Jewish, Muslim, and Christian calendars, respectively. The Samaritan year is shown here as 3646. They date their calendar from the entrance of the Israelites into the Land of Israel at the time of Yehoshua; as opposed to the Jewish calendar, which is dated from the creation of the world. Note that the Samaritan year is labelled as "ישראלי" ("Israelite"), and the Jewish year is labelled as "יהודהי" ("Judahite").
This one is a little weird. Firstly, why do they need a sign to remind people what year it is? Secondly, if they actually do need this, well, then they probably should update it to the current year already…
- Bulletin board, bottom middle:
ש את החג המצות תשמר, שבעת ימים תאכל מצות כאשר צויתיך
מ את חג המצות תשמר, שבעת ימים תאכל מצות אשר צוית ך
[שמות ל"ד:י"ח]
Note, once again, the variations in the text (Shemot 34:18).
- Bulletin board, top left [beside red circle]:
הערב
I imagine this had been put up once about an event some evening, which had appeared below it. I have no idea what the big red ball with lines is supposed to be.
- Bulletin board, bottom left:
ערב שבת החג המצות:
6:22
This one seems to be zman knissat Shabbat for the previous Shabbat. We would call it zman hadlakat neirot, except that the Samaritans don’t light Shabbat candles, of course. But why do they call it Shabbat Hag HaMatzot? Shabbat was Pesah (using their nomenclature); Hag HaMatzot didn’t start until motzaei Shabbat. Hmm…

The following post is in response to "I'll Call Baila's" superlative praise for the Israeli "dude shemesh" (solar hot water heater) ...
Erev Shabbat at the Muqata residence.
One by one, the kids shower, and get ready for Shabbat.
Plenty of time...always plenty of time. (Read the link if you haven't seen the story before)
[insert Jaws shark attack music here]
10 Minutes before Shabbat, I'm the last to take a shower. It's late, but I can make it....and then...there's no hot water left.
Not even lukewarm. Nothing.
The "Dude" was on for hours, but 7 kids will empty out your hot water supply quick enough.
We tried the "Gush Katif Always Available" hot water system.
Alas, it caught fire.
I climbed into our attic to see why there was no water pressure and saw smoke coming out of the "new and improved always available water system" -- I spent the rest of the day on oxygen in the emergency room.
Needless to say, that was disconnected.
And maintenance is part and parcel of the dude. Following is my personal list of possible problems with your dude...
1. The most common of all is the "Guf Chimum" -- the heating element. Israel's water supply is based on "hard water" -- our water supply is rich in minerals, specifically calcium. The problem with calcium is that when heated, it bonds with metal, causing all sorts of problems. The electricity based heating element in the dude dies every 2-3 years and needs to be replaced.
Its programmed to die on Erev Shabbat, usually in the winter, and usually when you have lots of kids around -- the more kids who need showers, the more likely it is your dude's "goof chimum" will die when you need it most. To replace it, you need to remove the old one...which requires all the water in your dude to come splashing out. Of course, your dude is probably in the attic -- and my house doesn't have a concrete floor under the dude -- just rafters and plaster, so I need to be careful that the water doesn't damage the plaster (and cause the whole floor/ceiling to collapse).
While I personally don't recommend replacing a guf-chimum on your own, here's a short video for the very brave (or foolish). Keep in mind; replacing it may cause your dude to leak, and then you'll need to completely open it up again to fix the leak... While I consider myself rather handy, I try to avoid dealing with the dude.
2. The Thermostat. Mounted underneath the dude -- these have a life expectancy of 3-5 years and can cause 2 problems. It can die, and not allow your dude to heat any water. Or, it can die and allow the dude to heat itself up as hot as possible. Without a fail-safe pressure valve on your dude, it could explode (see #3)
3. The Dude Split. The life expectancy of a dude is 10-15 years. The seam of the dude may start to leak, giving you an early indication to quickly replace your dude. The longer you wait -- the more dangerous it gets. A neighbor of ours was lucky. He went into his attic to examine his dude, and a minute after leaving the attic he heard a massive explosion upstairs. Outside his house, neighbors thought a bomb went off -- also because of all the smoke coming out of the roof tiles -- but it was steam. The dude exploded due to a faulty thermostat and a small split in the dude seam (and a possible broken pressure valve). My neighbor benched gomel in shul, having narrowly avoided getting burned to death by the exploding dude.
4. The Leaker. The seals around the dude's feeder and exit pipes (cold water going in, hot water going on) erode over time and need to be replaced. Similar to replacing the guf chimum, this requires draining the entire dude.
5. The Deep Freeze. When cold winter nights hit Israel and its around 1-2 degrees Celcius (or 32-35 degrees Fahrenheit) outside, if you don't leave a small trickle of hot water running, your dude's solar heating "koltim" (outside panels) run the risk of freezing...and exploding.
So, while it sounds like a great idea, these hot water boilers are rather high maintenance....and extremely inconvenient when they break down on Erev Shabbat.
There are other solutions, like the "heat water as you go" gas system...and some claim to have miracle systems which keep calcium/lime from accumulating on the guf chimum.
I don't believe in miracles. Well, not if they have the word, "dude" in them.

Merry Naqba
Yesterday [Sunday], two hundred left-wing activists and Israeli Arabs marched on Sunday from the Jerusalem Theater square to the Nature Museum on Emek Refaim Street in the capital marking 60 years since “Naqba Day", or “catastrophe” of Israel's inception in 1948. (YNET)
This past Friday, Naqba activists led protesters from Nazareth towards the deserted ruins of the village of Suffurriye – today's Zippori.Across the road, a peaceful group of Israeli volunteers from the "If you will it" organization were enjoying a Yom Ha'Atzmaut picnic, yet their raised Israeli flag raised the ire of the Naqba marchers.
The situation quickly deteriorated into a full scale Naqba riot. The police claim that the demonstrators wild incitement seeking provocation caused the riots. However, the rally attendants, including Hadash Chairman MK Mohammad Barakeh said that the riots were caused because the police did allow the rally-goers to properly disperse.
Northern Region District Commander Shimon Koren, Brigadier Zohar Dvir and 3 other police officers injured, as well as a few Arab demonstrators, including Balad’s MK Wasil Taha (pictured above). [YNET]
Just one thought; I'm very thankful that this isn't Israel's "Naqba" and the Arab's "celebration." I doubt they would have let us live long enough to commemorate anything. Israel's Old City of Jerusalem from 1948 to 1967 is a perfect example of what would have happened...
The Purple Parrot came up with a much better name for her Naqba post, "N Na Naq Naqba"...(where every day is Naqba day.)

Ani Iparon Redux; "I am a pencil"**
Thanks RafiG for the following anecdote (and hat-tip to DE for pointing it to me)
Standing for the TzfiraFor information on the Ani Iparon -- "I'm a pencil" sem girl statement, see AirTime's post here.I just heard (second-hand) this great Yom Ha'Zikaron anecdote about standing for the siren...
Introduction: the Hebrew word for siren is tzfira
This American seminary girl was returning to Israel from her Pesach trip home to the USA (visiting her family). She happened to return to Israel on the night of Yom Ha'Zikaron, though she knew nothing about that.
Anyway, so she is in the taxi on the way to Jerusalem from the airport. The taxi driver stops the taxi and says, "tzfira". The clock strikes 8 and the siren begins to wail. They stand outside of the taxi, and the sem girl starts shuckling and says the Bracha of "Al Sfiras Ha'Omer" and counts that days Omer.
After that she recounts how beautiful it is that in Israel, they sound a siren to announce the Sefira and everyone counts at the same time.

What the heck is going on in Lebanon?!
- I told him about Iraq's invasion of Kuwait (he missed that one, but then again, the NY Times didn't appreciate its significance the first day either).
- He told me about some big event in Russia back in August, 1991.
- I tagged him back this past Wednesday, and told him about Hizbollah's military coup in Lebanon.
- He tagged me back on Friday, that Lebanon had fallen. Well, almost...but it's only a matter of hours to days before Lebanon is entirely under Hizbollah's control.
The Lebanon Star reports from Beirut: Lebanon's governing coalition, the March 14 Forces, accused Hizbullah of staging a military coup against the state and said that Hizbullah's arms have become illegitimate after they were used against their fellow Lebanese citizens. "Hizbullah's claim that its arms were only targeted at Israel have proved false and invalid in the past two days, which witnessed the uses of such arms against the Lebanese people," the statement said.
Despite the dire warnings on the United States of America Embassy website in Beirut;
As stated in the current Travel Warning for Lebanon, the Department of State continues to strongly urge that Americans defer travel to Lebanon and that American citizens in Lebanon consider carefully the risks of remaining. In a crisis situation, American citizens are responsible for arranging commercial or private means of transportation to depart Lebanon. American citizens wishing to depart Lebanon are urged to do so, keeping in mind that options are currently limited.
Major roads to Beirut International Airport remain blocked, and there is only limited airline service at present. Violent clashes in several areas in and around Beirut have been reported, and it is still not known when the airport road will re-open and normal air transport services will resume. The main road to Damascus remains blocked.
American citizens wanting to depart may wish to consider chartering private watercraft to Cyprus. Until such time as travel services out of Lebanon become available, the U.S. Embassy urges American citizens to ensure they have an adequate supply of food, water and other essential items and to remain safely inside their homes. Americans are encouraged to review their travel plans following resumption of normal air services.
the embassy website claims that it's still business as usual...sort of.
The U.S. Embassy remains open for business; however, Nonimmigrant Visa processing has been suspended except under special circumstances. American Citizen Services and Immigrant Visa processing are functioning normally. American citizens are urged to avoid the airport road and any other areas where demonstrators are gathered, and to monitor the local media for information regarding the security situation.
Of course, nothing could be worse for Israel than the timing of Lebanon's take-over by Hizbollah, than the current (and latest) Olmert scandal -- which is paralyzing Israel from effectively preparing for the new reality. The only message the government could send out was far from reassuring...
The latest upheaval in Lebanon found its way to the government meeting Sunday, as Military Intelligence chief Major-General Amos Yadlin briefed the ministers on the ongoings across the northern border. Israel, said Yadlin, must be prepared for the power shift in Lebanon: "Hizbullah's use of weapons inside Beirut send a very different kind of message… We have to be pragmatic, but there is no need for hysteria."
Vice Premier Haim Ramon added that "we have to realize that Lebanon is a Hizbullah state. Everything happening there is their doing… The country is ruled by the Hizbullah and the reigning government is meaningless, its fiction."
Internal Security Minister Avi Dichter reiterated, "Hizbullah maintains its hold on Lebanon, without the responsibility of running matters of state. This creates a real difficulty for Israel, which can't work against the (emanating) regional terror."
"We are constantly briefed on the situation in Beirut, and since Israel may be affected by what is going on over there, we are somewhat concerned… Israel, however, cannot lead the international response (to the events), which is why we are still refraining from any official move." (YNET)
The Middle East has definitely just taken a new turn for the worse.

A prophecy fulfilled?
במדבר ל"ג:נ"ה --
"And if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the Land from before you, then those of them whom you allow to remain will become spikes in your eyes and thorns in your sides; and they will harass you upon the Land in which you dwell."

The Laundry Man
Who, exactly, is Morris Talansky, and whose interests does he represent? Well, among other things, Talansky is an ordained rabbi, with semicha from YU, and he served once in a pulpit position in Portland, Oregon. He later went into business, and became embroiled in many conflicts and lawsuits with his various associates. These conficts are marked by allegations of violent threats and extortion, and a review of the court records paints the picture of a shady loan shark that seems to be a character right out of an episode of The Sopranos. From the New York Times:
At least two of the lawsuits involving Mr. Talansky contain allegations that he or people he enlisted made threats in the course of collecting debts or resolving business conflicts.
He sued one of his accusers, Richard Penzer, for libel in 1995 in state court on the grounds that the accusations had jeopardized Mr. Talansky’s longtime job raising money for Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem. The case was settled three years later, when Mr. Talansky accepted $60,000 and a one-line apology from Mr. Penzer.
Initially at odds with Mr. Talansky over a real estate deal, Mr. Penzer had sent donors and officials associated with Shaare Zedek letters in 1994 asserting that Mr. Talansky had threatened him "with the expressed goal of extorting money".
Court records include a sworn statement from a police file, dated January 1992, in which a Long Island man said he had met Mr. Talansky one night at Scores, a topless bar in Manhattan, and tried to help him collect a debt from Mr. Penzer.
"He began to tell me about how he took a devastating loss of approximately $2.8 million in a real estate deal that went bad," the Long Island man, Michael Sciotto, told the police. "He was swindled and he described it as a setup."
The statement continued, "I told him I would talk to Mr. Penzer and see if I could shake him up a little and possibly could get Talansky’s money back."
In another lawsuit, Mr. Talansky sued a man who he said promised him "substantial interest at low or no risk" on a $300,000 loan he made in 1998 to the Forgotten Woman, a retail chain that went bankrupt three months after his loan.
After much litigation, the defendant, Frederick Schulman, prevailed in court on the fraud counts but also made a counterclaim accusing Mr. Talansky of sending "thugs" to collect money from him.
Mr. Talansky replied that he had sold the right to collect part of the debt to a third party and could not be held responsible. The judge rejected Mr. Schulman’s request for summary judgment on the extortion charge, but said he could pursue it in a trial. The parties eventually settled, according to a lawyer in the case.

Using the "New Jerusalem Foundation" as a conduit, Talansky has been funneling money to Olmert for nine years. But Olmert isn't the only policitian Talansky has helped out: Over the last two decades, he has made generous financial contributions to the campaigns of Mayor Rudy Guilianni (Republican, 2000), President George W. Bush (Republican, 2003), Senator Edward M. Kennedy (Democrat, 1992), House Speaker Thomas S. Foley (Democrat, 1994) President Bill Clinton (Democrat, 1995). An equal-opportunity contributor, indeed.
In her written logs of Olmert's payments from Talansky, Shula Zaken, Olmert's personal secretary (recently placed under house arrest), refers to Talansky as "The Laundry Man".
So Talansky is a colorful charcter indeed: A money-laundering loan-shark Orthodox rabbi who uses thugs to "shake up" his creditors, who meets with his business associates in topless bars, and who took on the role, for nearly a decade, of Ehud Olmert's patron.
But there's more to Talansky than this, much more.
Morris Talansky is a founding partner, and a major shareholder, of ImageSat, an Israeli company that rents out access to spy satellites and their high-resolution images -- often to governments, for purposes of military intelligence. ImageSat is enjoined by an agreement with the Israeli Defense Ministry from selling access or data to Arab states at war with Israel, or to the "rogue states" of Iran, Cuba, and North Korea. However, Talansky and his group of fellow shareholders are anxious for a quick return on their investment, and are less than happy with these pesky restrictions. They have attempted to skirt the ban on sales to Iran by negotiating a deal with notorious Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez, a close ally of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad. Chavez is a radical Marxist and anti-American, and like Ahmedinejad, has called for the destruction of Israel. Talansky's associate and fellow ImageSat shareholder Stephen Wilson began negotiating a large-scale deal with Chavez in 1999, and even moved to Venezuela in 2001. By 2002, he secured Chavez's interest in a multi-million dollar deal with ImageSat for spy satellite access.
But to the chagrin of Wilson, Talansky, and their fellow investors, ImageSat -- together with its parent companies, Israel Aircraft Industries and Elbit Systems -- balked at the deal for obvious security reasons. Enraged, Talansky and friends filed suit against ImageSat, in a bid to force them to provide Chavez with the spy data.
In the lawsuit, the investors also charge ImageSat with blocking similar lucrative deals they tried to make with Angola and Russia, also countries closely allied with Israel's enemies.
So while Talansky was fighting to circumvent Israel's security restrictions on ImageSat, he was also giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to Israel's Minister of Industry and Trade, Ehud Olmert. It will be interesting to see whether the ImageSat conflict plays any role in the current investigation and expected indictment.
To call Talansky a hilul Hashem would be a gross understatement. As an orthodox Rabbi who, at best, operates in the gray zone of the law, he is certainly an awful embarrassment. But Talansky is far more than just a loan shark with a yarmulkeh: He is a man who does not hesitate to place his own narrow financial interests over the interests of Israel's security and the survival of his fellow Jews. It's very easy to understand why Olmert chose the patronage of such a like-minded person.
* The media seems a bit confused about whether to refer to this organization as "The New Jerusalem Foundation" or "The New Jerusalem Fund". See here for details.

Between Two Worlds
Now that busy season is over for me, I can do things like post to Jameel's blog when he's not paying attention - woo!
But I'm really here to tell you that y'all would appreciate this post by Stam entitled Between Two Worlds. Excerpt:
Growing up in two schools with very different outlooks on this issue has left me a little confused. On one hand i do feel its important to observe/celebrate these occasions, but with the "yeshivish" world so against anything "Tzioni" (including Bamba) I feel that by caring, i'm doing something "wrong". The Gush Katif/Shomron situation was similar. Nothing was mentioned in the BY high schools or seminaries, while the "Tzioni" schools shared the news and kept their students updated. We were in Israel and didn't even have a clue about what was going on!Wherever I am, my blog turns towards Eretz Yisrael טובה הארץ מאד מאד
I remember finding a poster when I was in seminary that said "Yehudim Lo Migrashim Yehudim". I took it to my Aim HaBayit and asked her what "migrashim" meant. She looked at the poster and then she looked at me and she said "we stay out of this, throw that away".

Israel's Youngest Fallen Soldier
Israel's Ministry of Defense houses the "Izkor" Remembrance Project Web Site, which documents every single soldier to have died for Israel. Following is the story of Nissim Gini, wounded in the battle defending the Old city of Jerusalem on May 27th, 1948, and he succumbed on the following day, May 28th, 1948.
This is his story (translated by me) Nissim Gini, son of Miriam and Yitzchak, born in 1938 in the old city of Jerusalem, where he lived his entire short life from beginning to end. He learned in school till the Israeli War of Independence in 1948 and Siege against the Old City of Jerusalem interrupted his routine life.
When the battles started, he volunteered, as did his young friends, to defend his city and birthplace -- and demanded a position [in the army]. Without telephones or wireless radios to communication between military positions in the winding alleyways, he was given the task of being the communication "runner" between positions -- which he did with adult responsibly and faithfully amidst hailstorms of bullets and the thundering of bombs.
He requested a handgun in case he be faced by an Arab solider, but his request was rejected. On the 27 of May, 1948, when one of the Jewish positions fell, he was seriously wounded, and he died a painful day later on the 28th of May, 1948, the 19th of Iyar, 5708. He was buried in the Old city.He was ten years old.
The youngest to fall in Israel's battles.
His name is inscribed on the monument at the Har Herzel military cemetery for the victims of the battle for the Old city of Jerusalem, and he was reburied on Har HaZeitim, the Mount of Olives.

Memorial Day: Mourn, Comfort and Remember
I pulled over to the side of the road, turned on the car's hazard lights, got out and stood next to my car under the dark sky. Other cars also stopped, their driver's got out, and we stood silently listening to the siren.
So what do you think about during the siren? Once upon a time, I used to say tehillim to myself to honor the memory of the IDF soldiers who fell defending Israel. Yet the one minute siren is so short, many more thoughts last night reverberated in my head.
The first time I heard the siren in wartime was when the scuds fell in January 1991; wearing a gas mask and watching TV reports of where the Iraqi rockets landed....were they chemical or conventional warheads?
Sirens in Tzefat during the Lebanon war 2 years ago when Hizbollah Katyusha rockets landed around the clock, scorching the Galil.
A terror attack in Hevron's Mearat HaMachpela this past sukkot.
Soldiers who died fighting for Israel -- so many funerals in the past 17 years. Some soldiers I knew personally, some I admired from afar, others were fellow members of Kitot Konenuyot, the counter-terror units that respond to terror infiltrations.
And then there are the civilian casualties. Israel's Memorial Day also commemorates the victims of Arab terror; the bus bombings, stabbings, shootings, infiltrations, kidnappings, hijackings...the rocks and Molotov cocktails as well. Friends, neighbors, and strangers killed and wounded -- at the wrong place at the wrong time.
All those thoughts packed into instant.
The siren's wail ebbed away.

Front Runner: Tzippi Livni
With Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's chances of political survival diminishing by the hour, the White House Staff has reportedly been instructed by President Bush and Condoleeza Rice to treat Israel's Foreign Minister Tzippi Livni as Olmert's replacement. (Scoop here in Hebrew)This doesn't bode well for Israel.
My esteemed blogging colleague, Likud analyst par-excellence Professor Ben Chorin has said of Livni, "Tzippi Livni -- whose utter lack of charm, grace and charisma is occasionally mistaken for intelligence..."
Adding more credence to Olmert's demise, PA head Muhammad Abbas believes that the negotiations with Olmert are going to end up having been a "big waste of time". (YNET)
I'll drink to that.

Bypassing the Gag-order; Olmert Scandal #237
Two leading newspapers in Israel have already broken the order and have printed some of the details surrounding the investigation.
However!
Since this blog is hosted on a US server via Google, I will now break the gag-order and show you the many as yet unpublished details of the investigation (which have been confirmed as accurate by Israel Channel 2 Radio, Army Radio and others)...
Presenting; the investigation against PM Ehud Olmert, scandal 237...
NY Post: May 6, 2008 -- A Long Island mogul is at the center of a sensational bribery scandal that could bring down embattled Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, The Post has learned.
Millionaire financier Morris Talansky - who runs an investment firm out of his tony home in Woodmere - allegedly passed money to Olmert while the politician was mayor of Jerusalem in the '90s, sources said.
In a highly unusual move, Israeli authorities have barred the country's media from publishing Talansky's name - revealed now in The Post - saying it could hamper their investigation. Israeli media has referred only to the involvement of an "American businessman."
Talansky is apparently set to sing to Israeli authorities about his alleged role in the scheme, sources said.
"It looks serious, and it looks like they have a state witness" in Talansky, one source said.
Talansky - a philanthropist and political contributor to everyone from Rudy Giuliani to Bill Clinton - is in Jerusalem, where he has an apartment, preparing to head to a closed-door court hearing as early as today, sources said.
The 75-year-old was earlier questioned about the alleged scheme almost immediately after arriving in the country for Passover, and he implicated Olmert, sources have said.
It was unclear what the alleged payments to Olmert were for, but sources said they involved hefty amounts of cash.
Talansky repeatedly appears - sometimes under the nickname "The Laundry Man" - in the logs of financial dealings kept by Olmert's longtime aide, Shula Zakan, a source said.
Olmert was grilled by investigators Friday. He has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
The allegations are only the latest in a string of woes for Olmert, who has battled past charges of government corruption and questionable personal business practices.
"But this time seems very serious, and it seems eventually, we don't know if it will be days, weeks or months, in the end, he may not be able to continue to be prime minister," one source said.
A man answering the phone at Talansky's multimillion-dollar mansion in Woodmere yesterday said, "He's not available."
Talansky lists himself as CEO of the Global Resources Group, a self-described financial-investment firm.
Additional reporting by Kieran Crowley
The best take on this so far is from Olmert's people themselves; They claim the investigation and scandal emerged because of the doings of the "enemies of peace" (ie, rightwingers).
Just as Olmert was about to reach a "historic" deal with Syria and the Palestinians, someone has to go ahead and dredge up these silly claims and petty crimes. Currently on YNET in Hebrew...will get it in English soon.
Developing story/scandal.

Learn To Shoot
Like most Rapid Response Teams in the Judea region (not to mention other special security forces), I’ve done some training at the Caliber 3 shooting range.
Let me tell you, compared to most IDF training bases, this place is heaven. Soda machines, bathrooms, running water, concrete floors, and ceiling netting (for shade). You couldn’t ask for a nicer outdoor range. (And if you’ve only shot in an indoor range, you’re in for a surprise, it’s a completely different experience).
Anyway, the owners of the Caliber 3 Shooting Range have opened up their training services to the general public.

They are offering a special 2 hour package for tourists visiting Israel (or you wanna-be settlers in Beit Shemesh).

The package includes explanations of the security situations Israelis face, examples of different anti-Terrorist techniques, and of course the fun part - Shooting pistols and machine guns.
The program is open to individuals, groups, and families. You can see from the photos on their site that everyone is having a great time.

Of course they’re having a great time. They shooting M-16s and Glock pistols.

Why do you think half the people on the RRTs join up in the first place?
So head on over to their website and learn first hand what it is like to protect a settlement and fight a terrorist.

How Much Would You Pay for Art?
Ha’aretz claims that their probe indicates that the current Olmert investigation revolves around Olmert using his position to help promote his wife’s artwork and art career.
I’m not much of a modern art critic, but how much would you pay for these, and would you really want them in your house?
(Gads, I don't even want to see it on the blog!)
My wife has another theory.
Forget million dollar discounts on Cremioux. This involves a much better way of buying financing a candidate. Buy the politician's wife’s artwork in exchange for favors. (And we're not talking pennies here).
And seriously, after looking at those two samples of her work, can there be any doubt in anyone’s mind what the buyers were really buying for all that money?
You read it here (actually hopefully on JoeSettler) first.

Finally.
Despite having been annoyed at many of Uri Orbach's columns lately, I fully endorse the latest "nusach" of the prayer for the welfare of the State of Israel. (Translated here)

Reminder: This Shabbat -- Shlissel Challa
This Shabbat -- the one right after Pesach is when many Jews bake "Shlissel Challah" -- Challah in the shape of a key (or a key baked inside the Challah). It's considered a segula for all sorts of good things...
Orthomom (remember her?) found all the sources last year:
1. Based on "Pitchi Li Achoti, Ra'ayati..." ("Open up, my darling..."--Shir HaShirim 5:2), on which the Medrash states "Pitchu li petach ke-chudo shel machat...," (cf. Shi HaShirim Rabbah 5, s.v. "Kol Dodi Dofek") = something like "Open your hearts (in teshuvah) like the eye of the needle, and I (God) will open the rest like [a very largeJosh Waxman in the parsha blog also had more on the subject.
opening].
2. According to Kabbalah on Pesach the gates to heaven were open, and following Pesach the lower gates are shut, and it's up to us to open them again, therefor on the 1st Shabbat we put the key on the challah to show that through the mitzvah of Shabbat we are opening the locks [original source?].
3. In the desert the Jewish people ate from the manna until after Pesach upon entering the land (with the bringing of the Omer, see: Josh. 5:11), at which point the ate from the produce of the land, and became dependant on their livelihood for the first time (now they had no manna). The key in the challah after Pesach is a request the God should open the Sha'arei Parnasah (gates of livelihood). Alternatively, the manna began to fall in the month of Iyyar, and this Shabbat is always Shabbat Mevarchim Iyyar.
See: Sefer Ta'amei HaMinhagim, pp. 249-50.
See: Encyclopedia Judaica, vol. 6, pp. 1419-20 for a photo of a shluss challah (and other "special" challot). It seems (from both of the above sources) that the minhag was to bake the key on top of the challah not inside (a la the old jail break trick).
But the source I'm familar with is from the Sefer Ta'amei Minhagim that says it's based on the pasuk, 'יפתח ה' לך את אוצרו הטוב את השמים לתת מטר ארצך בעתו'

Anyway - we bake a key into the challah. Much easier that braiding the dough into a key.
Shabbat Shalom!
PS: Hat-tip to CK from Jewlicious for the Challah Hu Akbar graphic (apparently :)

Every Person Has a Name
From Rabbi Natan Slifkin (Zoo Torah)
In lieu of an essay, I thought that I would refer you to two fascinating stories of zoos that hid Jews during the Holocaust.
One is the Artis Zoo in Amsterdam; you can watch a brief video about its rescue of Jews.
The other is the Warsaw Zoo, whose rescue of Jews has been novelized in a fascinating new book by Diane Ackerman, "The Zookeeper's Wife"
"In both accounts, the unique features of a zoo made it possible for the very brave zoo directors to successfully hide people in the grounds -- both accounts are extraordinary stories of ingenuity and bravery amidst the darkness."
And this video's from Jewlicious -- the siren this morning in Jerusalem, and how everything just stopped.

Special Israel 60th Birthday Junk Food Edition
Hey. You got your peanut butter in my chocolate. No, YOU got your chocolate in my peanut butter.
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups?
Guess again. In honor of Israel's 60th birthday next week, Osem is creating a new version of the Israeli Classic Bamba Junk Food -- Bamba with creamy chocolate nougat inside.
Sorry people, it sounds totally gross.

Extremist Attack Ehud Barak
For more great posts, visit JoeSettler
The Shabak again failed to protect a minister in the Israeli government as extremists managed to reach Defense Minister Barak and physically assault him (and curse him too).
Something must be done against these radical extremists. Laws must be passed. Those kippa-wearers should be ashamed to walk the streets.
This kind of violence will lead to murder.
Have we learned nothing from the Rabin murder?!
What?
What was that you say?
They weren’t extreme Right-wingers?
They were secular members in good standing of the Left-wing Labor party?
Oh. Well.
In that case it was just a party debate. Barak was never in any danger.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF BAY AREA JEWS BEING SO FRIGGIN' CLUELESS YOU WONDER WHERE THEIR HEADS ARE
[Guest-post by B.O.T.H. http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/ (file this under news of the weird).]
There's a notice on Indybay (SF Indy media) calling for anti-Israel Jews to volunteer for direct action and get arrested on behalf of the Palestinians.
http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2008/04/28/18495604.php
Contrary to what you might think, there is no coven of Neturei Kartaniks here - unless they are very well hidden. The organizers and their intended volunteers are from the segment of Jewry which can best be described as "Jews of convenience". Meaning that they only admit to being Jewish if they can use it against Jews or against Israel. Jews who give plausible deniability to anti-Semites and supporters of Hamas and Hezbollah. Decorative Jews.
Here is part of the notice on Indybay:
Calling anti-Zionist and non-Zionist Jews and those in solidarity with the Palestinian Liberation struggle!
There is growing enthusiasm and support for an action to confront celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the founding of Israel.
In honor of 60 plus years of Palestinian resistance and against the siege on Gaza, there is a critical need for fierce Jewish dissent with these celebrations.
We need 60-80 Jews to take arrest and as many Jewish & non-Jewish Palestine Solidarity activists as possible to participate more broadly.
The action will include visual and creative resistance and direct action.
We have a date, time and a plan and we are hoping that you will join us.
Sounds chirpy, doesn't it? Kinda like the glee-club is throwing a party. Almost makes ya want to send them a beer keg. In which case, it is probably a good thing that they tell you where to send the keg. It continues:
It is critical to attend a planning meeting for details: the next planning meeting will be Wednesday, April 30 at 522 Valencia St., SF.
Orientations will be Sunday, May 4th from 12noon to 2pm in the East Bay and from 7:30 to 9:30pm in SF — it is critical to attend an orientation in order to hear the plan, location, and meeting place and time (please e-mail below for date and location).
Please e-mail BAnakbaorganizing [at] gmail.com with your name, phone number, participation interest, and how you heard about the action. Someone will call you about participating in the action.
Now, if you're reading this, you're probably wondering "surely they aren't that meshugge? Surely they don't think that this wins them any kind of cosmic brownie-points?
Sorry, but yes they are that meshugge, and yes they do indeed believe that this wins them bucket-loads of cosmic brownie-points. This is the Bay Area we're talking about; the place where 'if it can't be solved with wheat germ and tofu, it's gotta be a Zionist plot'.
---------------
On a related note, one of the pro-Palestinian organizers in the Bay Area recently moved here from Minneapolis St. Paul - Perry Bellow-Handelman. She was very active there in Jewish Community Action, gay organizing, and boycotting a major corporation because of it's labour and environmental sins.
I guess we now also import our Israel hate. We're so friggin' lucky.
Here in the Bay Area, being pro-Israel counts as a dangerous eccentricity. Or a perversion on par with being a smoker or a chicken strangler.
