Pop Quiz: "A Jewish and Democratic State"

The news over the past few days has been about Israel requiring newly naturalized citizens to swear an oath accepting Israel as a "Jewish and Democratic state".

The oath has raised a tremendous amount of criticism from those on the political left.

Apparently there is a lot of confusion and misinformation about the term. We've put together this pop quiz to see what you know about Israel as a "Jewish and Democratic state".

We will be displaying the results (and supplying the right answers) in a few days.

Please respond only once as this isn't a poll to convince anyone that you have the majority on your side, it's a poll to see what everyone knows.

This is silly. Regarding question 1, how can you know who coined the phrase? It appears in the Basic Law, but who knows when or by whom it was originally phrased? Question 2 is also silly; founded according to whom? The DoI definitely says Israel is a "Jewish state" but it also enshrines many democratic principles and promises equality to all its citizens, which at least leaves options 2 and 3 open to interpretive possibility. And 5 is just pure editorializing.

It is called historical research. The earliest known usage of the phrase in writing.

If Ben gurion said it in 1953, and its written in the basic laws passed in 1972, then Ben gurion coined it. If the reverse, then the basic laws coined it.

What if it's in the Basic Law, and we can find no record of it earlier? Does that mean no one coined it earlier? Does that mean that the concept of a Jewish and democratic state did not exist earlier?

It's a silly question.

Yes, it means that nobody coined it earlier.

No, it does not mean that the concept did not exist before. It just means that the phrase was not coined.

For example, the phrase "friend with benefits" was coined by Alanis Morrisett in 1995. However the concept certainly existed long long before that.

So, we're just asking, for purposes of trivia, who was the first person on record to put together the words "Jewish and democratic state", in that order, and are not attempting to drawn any political conclusions from it? Okay, if that's what we're doing. That's not how I interpreted the question, however.

What are you planning to do with your "research", JoeSlime? Make more groundbreaking claims against Leftists/people who don't agree with you that nobody cares about save the few K-razies that follow your blog and posts?

What is meant by a "K-razy" ?

Vox - why are you so threatened by this question and this poll in general? It seems to really strike a chord with you. Some kind of insecurity ?

I don't find the question threatening so much as I find it sneaky. It's underhanded to try and equate an idea with the currently used phrasing of that idea, and assume that one has the same intellectual history and identity as the other.

Also, I'm a stealth jihadist.
