12:10 AM From a friend on facebook:

Surreal story from Eli Birnbaum in Tekoa:
Erev Shabbat in Tekoa (like most places) is a contradiction of tension and relief. This time the arrival of Shabbat was accompanied by warning sirens for a missile attack. Surprise and unbelief “Missiles here in the Judean desert?” Before we can really grasp what was happening, there came the resounding boom of an explosion echoing in the hills reflecting the shock in our faces. The security van careens through the streets calling people to find shelter. Within minutes another siren warning. This time prayers are halted . “Quickly under the shul,” someone commands. Within the confusion we grab our children and grandchildren in our arms and climb down to the open area under the synagogue which affords more protection. We all move quickly in the darkening evening finding space on the floor . I hold one of my grandchildren talking to him softly . He thinks it is a great game. We begin to sing and wait for the next boom.

It was at that moment that my son Pinny’s cell phone rings. As a member of a search and rescue team it is not uncommon for him to get calls even on Shabbat. But this call was different “Shabbat Shalom” . It is a familiar voice with a very distinct accent. “ Pinny, its Muhammad, what do I do? What’s happening? I heard your sirens”. There is real panic in his voice.
At first this may not appear to be an abnormal situation, but Muhammad is an acquaintance/friend who happens to live in the Arab village of Tuqua which the army will only enter in large numbers. Pinny quietly explains that we were being rocketed from Gaza and the best thing he could do is to remain in doors and stay away from windows. Muhammad thanks Pinny profusely apologizes for calling on Shabbat “ Shabbat Shalom Pinny – B’Emet todah!”. So this Friday night , a “Palestinian Arab” called a “Jewish Settler” for help regarding a rocket attack from Gaza – Surreal!

12:01 AM Today in Beer Sheva, a 73 year old man collapsed while running for shelter during an Air Raid Siren, due to a barrage of rockets fired at the city.  Magen David Adom medics attempted to resuscitate the man, but he was declared dead. (source)

Many of the Arabs in smaller villages in Judea and Samaria have some roots here. They live in Arab towns named after ancient Jewish towns that existed here long ago. For every Tekoa there is a Tuqua. For every Michmash there is a Muchmas. It is uncanny how many such pairs of communities exist here. Gaza is a different situation. About 80% of the Arabs there are from Egypt and were headed there in 1948 when King Farouk sealed the border. The most common last name in Gaza City is Masri meaning Egyptian. One day it will be arranged that they finally can return to the place from whence they came at the turn of the 20th Century when they came here looking for high paying jobs provided by the Old Yishuv. G-d willing that will be soon, maybe this week. Amein.

Joe,
Please advise your readers in Israel NOT to rely on GALGALATZ "TZEVA ADOM" announcements via the Internet as there is a 5-20 second delay compared to real-time radio on 91.8 FM.
Thanks for your great reporting! Kol Hakavod!

There was a huge boom in petach tikva now but NO sirens. Don't believe what they say. Our moked said PT was not in danger so no sirens were activated. Don't know who said there were. It's not true.

Jameel @ The Muqata said...

AnniePT: It could be that someone in PT heard it coming from an adjacent neighborhood...

I do know that it was very clearly relayed to me.

Thanks for the updates. What happened to posts between 615 & 725?

Dov Bar-Leib said...

yes, Jameel. There was some info earlier about three grads or Fajirs headed for Gush Dan and only two of them were intercepted by Iron Dome. One landed somewhere. I now know that it was in Gush Dan. I happen to know more exactly where, but it would be irresponsible to say exactly. Yet, you erased what you had written for the time frame mentioned above by Jewish Freak. Thanks for all that you are doing.

anneinpt said...

@Jameel 7.30 pm: it could be someone in PT heard the sirens from Tel Aviv or the environs. That happened to me this morning when I (and many others) heard their sirens and then a distant boom. But tonight the boom was so loud I nearly had a heart attack (חס ושלום), it took me hours to stop shaking.

Which of course brings home so clearly what the southern residents have had to live with for years. I don't know how they haven't all gone crazy from fear. I so admire their courage and steadfastness.

My city's moked's explanation, that they don't activate sirens if there's no direct danger to the citizens, makes sense of course, but on the other hand it would be nice to get a bit of a warning before Iron Dome activates over my head!

If it happens again I hope to be calmer, knowing what's going on.
