Judging Others. The Movie.

David Bogner has written some excellent posts recently about the importance of not judging others. This past shabbat, we were short 2 for a minyan, and asked 2 secular teenagers complete with body piercings (all in the head zone) if they could help us complete the necessary 10 adult quorum needed for our minyan. They enthusiastically helped us out -- in fact, they were thrilled to participate.

A reader sent me this video clip, and its a perfect example of why we shouldn't judge others based on externals. It should be an important message to us all.

I can't believe you even find this clip funny. I thought it was really stupid, especially from someone who is apparantly familiar with the situation in Israel and how important it is to 'judge someone' on the basis of their clothing. How about you make a video of yourself next time, walking on to an Eged bus with a Palestinian flag. I'll laugh at that one.

anonymous - If you didn't find it humourous...I won't judge you either. Feel free to suggest an alternative!

I used to organize a minyan at work. Do you know who were the most reliable attendees? Those who weren't frum who were saying or who had said kaddish.

Perhaps I was supposed to arrange the Minyan. It was payback. Before my father was married he wasn't frum. When his mother died and he was stationed in Fort Dix, he said that the Orthodox soldiers always made sure that he had a minyan.

So years later it became my (and my brother's) job to give others the opportunity that others had given our father.

Um, you were joking about that video sending an important message about not judging by externals, weren't you? On one hand, sure, it was funny to watch- but on the other hand, it was really stupid and mean of that guy to scare people that way- he's lucky the cops didn't pick him up!

RR: Yeah, it was a joke. Tried to find something a bit lighter, since the current situation is so tense.

People I think Jameel might be using this movie as a metaphor.
Change your appearance, and all of a sudden, your not worthy, not frum, not employed, not this not that...

The shooters of the Video were lucky not to get actually shot, they showed a gross insensitivity to peoples fears and anxietys, but never the less I dont believe Jameel was wearing the stocking- well not this one any way.

and I found it funny.
(some won't for good reason)

but i also saw the message.

comedy - a fine line.
Boring - never challenging it.
