Now that Yom HaAtzmaut is over, here are a few pictures of what we did that day.
A time honored tradition of Yom HaAtzmaut is the IDF demonstrating to the public all sorts of technology and armor.
Some say this is a haughty, show-off attitude of "secular" Israel believing in it's own military might, without attributing our military success and acumen to help from G-d. (כוחי ועוצם ידי עשה לי את החיל הזה)
Personally, I look at it as the realization of the bracha we say daily,"אוזר ישראל בגבורה" -- we thank G-d for girding Israel with strength.
So our kids play in and around tanks (yes, I'm sure that's an awful militaristic message for impressionable kids), and the combat soldiers help paint faces of kids with camouflage.
And kids get dressed up as soldiers...

This proud soldier shows off his handiwork...
And here I am in my award-winning Rachel Corrie pose in front of an armored D9 bulldozer.
But wait...it's almost the end of the week, and I haven't yet made my recommendations for who to vote for in the JIBS!
The preliminary list I came up with is...
Jack's Shack
Rabbi Without A Cause
PsychoToddler
Chana, The Curious Jew
Jewbiqitous
The Renegade Rebbetzin
Hirhurim
Orthomom
JoeSettler
Ask Shifra
SerandEz
Life in Israel
DovBear (for best Jewish anti-establishment)
But then I realized to make this list official, I would have to list a name next to each category, and I have no time to do that...
Hmmm. What to do?
I will attempt to be brave and say do NOT vote for Hot Chanie (though whoever he/she is will probably torment my blog now). The reason not to vote for her is that she's in the same group as Kasamba, and I think Kasamba's a much better blog!
Fine. Maybe I'll go through the JIBs later and write a longer post, and try not to leave anyone off it. In the meantime...get and and vote!
Wherever I am, my blog turns towards Eretz Yisrael

Great photos J. Too bad I forgot to bring our camera to Chomesh!!!!
Hehe...lots of fun, the JIBs! It's so sad that Kasamba is no longer posting, but I voted for her anyway.
I LOVE the pose. And here, I could have sworn you look different in person. :)
"Rachel Corrie pose" hahahahaha
If you want to take voting advice from a man who wears WHITE SOCKS with oxfords be my guest, just don't ask him for fashion tips!
HUGS!
HC
PS What is a Kasamba anyway? One of those sefardi drum thingies?
You seem I did make the JIB recommendation list.
Now go out and vote for me!!!
Ezzie - I mean you.
I am deeply wounded. I was going to use the proceeds from my JIB to pay for much needed luxury items. Now that I'm not on your list, I'll be forced to keep my day job, which I am studiously avoiding while writing this comment.
Oh well.

Too bad the IDF wasted so many resources and tarnished their image with those stupid black uniforms while trying to stop us from reaching Chomesh at the same time as you were getting your pictures taken.
What do you have against Daf Yomi?
Besides for the snub, I'd agree with most of your list, especially Rafi and Psychotoddler.
Over 13,000 participated in the march to Chomesh http://yeshanews.com/?id=54613
and the IDF refused to allow busses in to take them out, forcing the paricipants to walk over 10km in the dark. Some were even forced to sleep after the IDF refued to allow the chartered busses in to take them out.

We were there. See www.dailychallenges.blogspot.com. Sorry I don't have any photos.
(Note, the pictures above are not my kids!)
Of course not. Your kids have big yellow smiley faces.
What!
No Rachel Corrie after pictures too?

Joe - I'll send you that one by email...not for the blog :)
Jameel-
thanks for the support! We're way behind in our bracket, and kind of reveling in it.
Also, on the topic of having your kids play on tanks: I grew up in an area where there are huge military demonstrations once a year. We always went as kids, had a great time, and didn't turn out at warmongering hawks.

I was going to praise the post, but then I saw that you don't like my blogs.
thanks for the plug.
It was obvious those were not your kids. they do not have that Muqata yellow your family is famous for...
"Personally, I look at it as the realization of the bracha we say daily,"עוזר ישראל בגבורה" -- we thank G-d for girding Israel with strength."
That's אוזר with an aleph! You would think that a guy named Jameel would know the difference between an aleph and an 'ayin :)
"Rachel Corrie pose" Niiiiiice.
Did you do a choking gas chamber victim pose when you visited Auschwitz?
Right on! That's exactly what I was thinking! But what can you expect from a colonialist mega-oppressor like Jameel?
Please remove the photo and text referring to Rachael Corrie or face legal action.

Bite me.
Legal action? For what? I didn't even call her "St. Pancake" as she is referred to on hundreds of other blogs.
