Prevent Swine Flu - Say "Asher Yatzar" (now, in ENGLISH)

After posting about this flier yesterday, issued by the NYC Board of Health -- in Yiddish, my good friend, Special Ed, found it for me in English as well.

Make sure your school, shul and workplace remind people about the importance of washing their hands with soap to prevent Swine Flu infection...and don't forget to say, "Asher Yatzar" -- print it up, hang it up, and stay healthy!

This has been a public health message from the NYC Board of Health....and the Muqata Blog.

Its Hashem who heals us. We must never forget it and in washing our hands we pay Him tribute for giving us the means to safeguard the lives that belong to Him. We live in this world until our work is done.

As I say:

Wash hygienically before you wash ritually.

On my desk sits a bottle of purell hand sanitizer. It kills germs without heating water. It should be used prior to ritual washing on Shabbat in frum households.

I think that wash our hands is good to prevent some disease, this is an habit that we have to do everyday before we take a lunch, but sometimes is difficult because we do not have the enough time.

The FluMist vaccine contains a living swine flu virus that is modified (attenuated is the medical term) in such a way that it only infects the nose and throat. There are two reasons for this: first, the H1N1 virus only becomes deadly when it works its way into the lungs; second, the nose and throat are cooler than the lungs and the FluMist virus dies under high temperatures. When the flu spray is administered in to the nose, it remains in the nasal area where the body begins to develop anti-bodies to it.

People tend to underestimate just how helpful simply washing your hands properly can be. I wonder what it will take for them to realize that the relatively mundane action is among the most effective first lines of defense we have against diseases.
