Yeshiva High School Students refuse to give journalists crash photos

The Pnei Chever Yeshiva High School is 1200 meters (about a mile) from where Assaf Ramon's F16 crashed on Sunday, and many students managed to film and photograph the f16 crash.

Reporters from all over descended on the hapless students, offering thousands of shekels for the exclusive photos.

However, not even one student acquiesced to the lure of money -- instead, they turned over all the photos and videos to the IDF who are investigating the crash.

Kol HaKavod.

Sounds like that's a yeshiva with quality education.

Exclusive Muqata update from a student at the Yeshiva: Some kids took photos with their cellphones and were offered a hundred shekels or so per photo, but the student who knew what he was doing, and used a digital camera was offered 2500 per photo. The army used his photos to decide where to search.

Haredim remember and mourn for Assaf Ramon

by Lurker

Assaf Ramon z"l and his mother Rona, at his Air Force graduation ceremony a few weeks ago

The article from the Tzofar website about which Jameel wrote in the previous post is incredibly revolting. However, people should not mistakenly assume that this sick article represents the overall haredi attitude towards the tragedy of Assaf Ramon z"l. Because it most certainly does not.

In fact, the very reason why that website put up that disgusting article, was, in their own words, to "warn about sycophants, masquerading as 'Haredim'". In other words, they are trying to attack the very positive, warm, and sympathetic attitude towards Ramon and his family, that has been seen in the haredi community over the last two days.

In particular, they are angry about this wonderful, heartwarming article in Ramon's memory that appeared on the haredi website B'Hadrei Haredim. The article speaks of the importance with which Assaf Ramon treasured his Jewish heritage, as did his father Ilan z"l.

Even more than that, the haters at Tzofar are furious about the campaign that has been launched throughout the haredi community by the same website (B'Hadrei Haredim), for people to learn mishnayot in Ramon's memory. This is a traditional Jewish mourning practice, that represents an effort to contribute "extra points" in heaven for a beloved person who has passed away. Even the usually haredi-bashing Haaretz wrote about this:
An ultra-Orthodox Web site dedicated to studying Mishna in memory of Israel Air Force pilot Capt. Assaf Ramon was set up on Sunday.

The "Behadrei Haredim" Web portal devoted its headline to the initiative, which represents a small breach in the official Haredi policy of distance from Israeli national tragedies in general and in the army in particular. People who respond to the memorial effort will commit to study all six books of the Mishna, as is customary in times of mourning.

The manager of Behadrei Haredim, Rabbi Dov Povarsky, said the strong response to the initiative shows that "the Haredi public, really all of it, identifies with and is pained by the death of Assaf Ramon. As opposed to the rabbis, who carefully weigh how such a move would be interpreted, we don't make such calculations. We are Internet journalism that grows from the bottom up and expresses the public's true feelings."
As Jameel said, "unfortunately along with the crazy riots in Jerusalem, the Chareidi population looks worse and worse on a daily basis". Often, however, this negative image is a distortion of the truth, perpetrated by a minority of low-lifes in the haredi world. The despicable people at Tzofar would like to distract us from the outpouring of love and sympathy for the Ramon family that the haredi community has shown, as have the Jewish people as a whole -- and instead focus exclusively upon the sinat hinam spewed forth by the miscreants at Tzofar and their ilk.

Let's not let them do that.

Ungh. Chareidi Website Spits at IDF Casualties

I'm not a Chareidi (Ultra-Orthodox) apologist, though I will admit to understanding their viewpoint better over time.

I volunteer with Chareidim within the scope of Hatzala/MDA EMT response to accidents, and the vast majority my interaction is positive. Hatzala has volunteers from all walks of life in Israel; Chareidim, national-religious, and secular. Male and even female volunteers (previously, that used to be taboo). Even Muslim, Druze and Christian volunteers.

But this post isn't about Hatzala. Its about this revolting Chareidi website that promoted this message concerning Assaf Ramon's tragic death.

The headline and byline reads:

Does the IDF casualty who didn't learn Torah, have a place in the "world to come?"

In order to warn about sycophants, masquerading as "Chareidim" -- and to enlighten our brothers who have gone astray, we must tell the truth. One only earns a place in the world to come, by learning and strengthening the Torah...

Hopefully, this website that so blatantly spits in the face of those who defend the country, is not representative of the average Chareidi worldview in Israel.

Unfortunately along with the crazy riots in Jerusalem, the Chareidi population looks worse and worse on a daily basis.

Volunteering is alive and well in Israel

"Abba, when you come tonight, make sure you wear your MDA uniform."

My oldest son called me up last night on my way home from work, "ordering" me to wear my Magen David Adom uniform to our community's "Volunteer Appreciation Evening", where the local town council thanked all the volunteers of our community.

I told my son that adults didn't have to come in uniform, and I wasn't showing up in an MDA volunteer capacity anyway -- but it was a nice idea for teenagers to come in uniform.

Volunteering in Israel is crucial for the success of our society. Volunteers fill in the huge cracks that are missing in government services. Perhaps when Israel is a richer country, people will get paid to do these jobs. Till then, the spirit of volunteering is what keeps Israel running on a daily basis.

Hundreds of volunteers packed our local high school; teenagers in their gray Fire Department uniforms, blue and white MDA uniforms, Bnei Akiva "tilboshot" shirts. Adults from the welfare department, Mishmar Ezrachi civilian police volunteers, Hatzala and Magen David Adom first responders, the fire department, our local police, our Hevra Kadisha burial society, ZAKA, Kitot Konenut (IDF First Response Counter Terror Units) and others.

Certificates were given out to some. Everyone got a nice key chain. Someone asked me, "Why didn't you get a certificate?" I told him I don't need one, or want one.

Thinking about it some more, the best possible "certificate" I could get -- was that my 2 oldest teenagers were also present last night. They also volunteer for Magen David Adom and our local Fire Department and spent much of their summer vacation riding ambulances, administering first aid to people in need, learning advanced first aid courses, and dealing with fires/extricating people from car crashes.

To see them in their uniforms last night with their friends, was more valuable than any certificate I could possibly receive. Knowing that we've managed to convey the importance of volunteering, is an immense source of pride.

A certificate goes on the wall and fades with time.

Children carrying on our legacy transcends everything.

UNFIL - Not so impartial

Granted, that's nothing new. It isn't the first time that UNFIL has covered up for Hezbollah and their ilk. It turns out that they knew about this week's rocket attack as much as ten days ago. They didn't think it important to tell Israel. See, that might be construed as taking sides, and well we couldn't have that. Source

Second JBlogger Conference - my thoughts

Yesterday was the second JBlogger Conference -- hosted by Nefesh b'Nefesh and powered by WebAds.

The venue was different than last year's conference -- and took place at Beit Avichay in downtown Jerusalem.

I attended for 2 primary reasons.

1. I was subtly coerced into being on a panel about "Defending Israel." Honestly? I would rather not be on a panel or overtly draw attention to myself. Yet I was persuaded that it was more important to present ideas for defending Israel, than to worry about my semi anonymity. Its difficult for me to even judge how well the panel went over. I'm glad I got a few laughs out of the crowd, but the atmosphere seemed a bit too formal. Did anyone think my presentation had value? You'll have to let me know.

2. Social Networking. The more important reason to attend is to meet and see all those people from around the JBlogosphere that I rarely see. I'd much rather have an evening with almost no workshops and panels, and just have the opportunity to chat and hang out.

Its always a pleasure seeing David Bogner, so while I didn't feel the need to "be a better blogger" as was the name of his workshop, I attended anyway.

David Horowitz from the Jerusalem Post spoke well. He was entertaining -- and while constantly patting the JPost on the back, I won't complain. Their review of my panel and blog made me blush.
Introducing one particularly hotly anticipated workshop, "Defending Israel through social media tools," Yishai Fleisher of the Kumah blog said that "if the printing press made us all readers and Xerox made us all publishers, then the Internet made us all journalists."

Fleisher lauded the Internet's power and potential. "We now have the ability to reach people around the world in an instant," he said, adding that "it's important that bloggers remain opinionated - objectivity is not the holy grail; subjectivity is what it's all about."

The workshop Fleisher hosted featured Ashley Perry, an adviser to Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, along with prominent bloggers Carl of the Israel Matzav blog and the anonymous "Jameel" of the Muqata blog, two of the most referenced and respected pages among the online Jewish community. (JPost)

Ron Dermer spoke as well - WikiPedia claims that Dermer "is regarded as the most influential advisor to current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu."

Dermer inadvertently mentioned the Muqata as well - by crediting "the blogger" who broke the story about the photoshopped pictures in the Second Lebanon War by Reuters photographer Adnan Hajj. The Muqata blog was the first blog to mention the second doctored picture from Reuters (the first one we discussed here...)

Therefore, the logical question I asked was if the Israeli government wants our help to "Defend Israel" through the JBlogosphere (and we gladly help), why can't we get GPO Press Credentials? I was surprised that so many people applauded the question. Dermer promised he would take care of it. To help him with his promise -- if you are a serious blogger, drop me an email and I'll put together a request list to him.

Benji Lovitt was pretty funny -- I liked his line that, "You have to be careful what you write on facebook and twitter. For example, last week, I put up a status and everyone now thinks I'm gay. I wrote, "I'm very excited the HOT guy will be here soon." HOT guy -- you know, the cable company? Maybe I should switch to YES..."

It was fun seeing all these people I rarely get a chance to see. Professor Richard Landes, WestBankMama, Gidon, MominIsrael, Ruti, Baila, A Soldier's Mother, RivkA, Lurker, DoubleTapper, Bad4Shidduchim, CK from Jewlicious, Rafi G, Safraknit (I like the new name :) Elms in the Yard, My Shrapnel, The Big Felafel, Yisrael Medad, Shilo Muse, the IDF Spokespeople The Sandman, and many more. [will add links and more names soon].

Food was not as good as last year. Wish I had more time to chat with people. Overall, had a great time. The downside for me was getting beeper messages in the back during one of the presentations, of all the news that Assaf Ramon's F16 had crashed. I live blogged it -- while waiting for the official permission to publicize the details.

Ebay making Aliya to Israel!

Finally - now you can get that collector gefilte fish 6-jar set you've had your eye on for years.
Online auction company eBay Inc. (Nasdaq: EBAY) has cleared the way to open an office of PayPal in Israel, the company's online international money transfer and payments unit. Leumi Card VP Oded Zahavi will run PayPal Israel.

Although eBay has a Hebrew-language site eBay Israel with product prices listed in both dollars and shekels, as well as a search function for popular items, Israeli buyers have only limited options for paying through PayPal. They have to open an account using an international credit card, but they cannot withdraw money accumulated in the account because PayPal has no agreement with Israeli commercial banks. Shame on the Media

8:16 PM Rona Ramon, mother of fallen IAF pilot Assaf Ramon shocked IDF officers who arrived at her home to deliver the news of her son's death.

When the IDF officers arrived, Rona had already been called by news reporters asking for her feedback.

This is exactly the reason the Muqata blog refused to report the name of the pilot prior to receiving permission from the IDF censor.

News agencies and blogs that reported Ramon's death prior to the removal of the media blackout (and the family's notification), should be ashamed of themselves.

IDF and MDA Forces responding in South Hevron Hills

6:35 PM Released for publication. In a tragic IAF F16 air crash in the South Hebron hills, Assaf Ramon the son of Ilan Ramon's -- Israel's first astronaut was killed. Ilan Ramon was killed when the Space Shuttle Columbia exploded on re-entry.

JPOST:

IAF commander Maj.-Gen. Ido Nehushtan and head of the IDF Manpower Division Avi Zamir personally went to Rona Ramon's house to deliver the news.

News of the crash and the identity of the pilot resonated widely throughout the IDF and particularly in the Air Force where Ilan Ramon was a legend.

"This is shocking," said one senior IDF officer.

The cause of the accident was under investigation and was complicated by the large crash scene. Officials said that the debris was spread over a large piece of land near the settlement of Pinei Hever.

Ilan Ramon became the first Israeli in space aboard the fatal mission of Columbia which exploded during its reentry over Southern Texas in 2003. Ramon was a colonel in the IAF and before joining NASA he held a number of staff positions at the branch's Tel Aviv headquarters.

Assaf Ramon announced his plans to follow in his father's footsteps shortly following the Columbia tragedy. In 2006 he enlisted in the IDF and successfully passed the IAF's grueling examinations and trials for the prestigious pilot's course.

Assaf was the valedictorian of his class which graduated in June. Several months ago, during a routine training flight in a Skyhawk A4, Ramon encountered a technical failure when the engine suddenly died. Instead of injecting, like protocol dictates, Ramon, together with the flight instructor, succeeded in restarting the engine and safely returning to base.

6:24 PM Any Blogger posting information about the security incident in the South Hevron Hills is in direct violation of the IDF censor.

6:22 PM
IDF Censor continues tight blackout, yet the details keep showing up on Israeli websites, only to be deleted within seconds due to the sensitivity of the report.

6:01 PM
IDF Military censor forbids publication as of now. Details soon
