Na Naq Naqba Sameach!

As the Arab world gears up for violent "Naqba" (catastrophe) demonstrations against Israel, it's time to put things into perspective.

Naqba Day is commemorated on May 15th, the day on the Gregorian calendar following Israel's Creation on May 14, 1948.

Israel extended its hand in peace to the neighboring Arab countries. On May 15th, the day after Israel announced it's creation, all the Arab countries surrounding Israel declared war on Israel and attacked.

Despite the overwhelming military force of the Arab states, the fledgling Jewish State won the war. Hence the Naqba...the great "catastrophe" of the Arab world.

Had Israel lost the war, there would be no Naqba, and there would be no Jewish State. For the second time in a decade, the majority of the world's Jewish population would have faced annihilation.

Our survival is their catastrophe. Had there been no Naqba, the Jewish people would barely exist today.

So while the Arab world violently commemorates their failure to destroy Israel in 1948, we should and we must celebrate the ongoing existence of the Jewish State.

Naqba Sameach.

Naqba Week for Israel's Left

I don't recall so many catastrophe's for Israel's left wing, as this week.

First, Judge Goldstone recalled his damning report on Israel. Elder of Zion sums up the Left's reaction nicely:
Mondoweiss has, by my count, no fewer than 13 posts about Goldstone in just the past two days. It is almost as if the anti-Israel crowd is going the first three of the five stages of the Kübler-Ross model of grief:

Denial: Goldstone didn't really retract, and Israel still targets civilians in what must be the most ineffective attempt at ethnic cleansing in history.

Anger: Goldstone's U-turn is hurting the progressive, hate Israel movement

Bargaining: “The judge only comments on one small part of the report, which I take as an implication that the rest of the report stays intact and he is still in support of that.”

All we have left is depression and acceptance. Depression will come, but it won't be blogged, as anger is their driving emotion. Acceptance cannot come, because as long as Israel exists in any form, these hateful lunatics - who happily publish the most ridiculous rumors of Israel arming Gaddafi - will never accept any possible defense for its existence.
The second Naqba was the murder of Israeli Peace activist and actor Juliano Mer-Khamis in PA controlled Jenin. By Palestinians.

The third and perhaps most painful Naqba, is the loss of the NIF's primary funding from their Sugar Daddy, the Ford Foundation.

Losing so much funding will definitely have a dampening effect on the ability of NIF-funded organizations to fuel lies to Goldstone-like reports, and will take a bite out of the local "progressive Zionist" anti-Israel campaigns.

A side Naqba is the start of the trial against Hamas Terrorist, Dirar Abu Sisi, who the left has been claiming is an innocent engineer.
Dirar Abu Sisi gave Israeli intelligence 'valuable information' that led to the attack on arms smugglers in Port Sudan, Sudan, a source told Kuwait newspaper Al Jarida reported Thursday. According to the source, Abu Sisi passed along the sensitive information to Israel during his remand since he was abducted by a train in Ukraine last month.

The source also told Al Jarida that Israel also received valuable information on smuggling routes and cells operating from Sudan, through Egypt, and to Gaza, from a number of southern Sudanese refugees who have migrated to Israel. (JPost)
It's all narrative anyway. One person's Naqba is another's sigh of relief.

A balanced article managed to slip through the sharp claws of Haaretz's editorial staff, and I'm recommending it for all: Israel's left needs to wise up to Middle East reality: How would the left have reacted had Juliano Mer-Khamis been murdered by Jews?

Naqba Sameach!

Merry Naqba

Once upon a time, the Arabs of Eretz Yisrael annually commemorated the "Naqba" ("day of the catastrophe" / annual day of defeat) on May 15th, the day after the English date of Israel's declared independence in 1948. These days, it seems that the Naqba celebrations have been changed to directly clash with Israel's Yom Ha'Atzmaut (Independence Day) which is commemorated based on the Hebrew day (5th of Iyar).
Yesterday [Sunday], two hundred left-wing activists and Israeli Arabs marched on Sunday from the Jerusalem Theater square to the Nature Museum on Emek Refaim Street in the capital marking 60 years since “Naqba Day", or “catastrophe” of Israel's inception in 1948. (YNET)

This past Friday, Naqba activists led protesters from Nazareth towards the deserted ruins of the village of Suffurriye – today's Zippori.

Across the road, a peaceful group of Israeli volunteers from the "If you will it" organization were enjoying a Yom Ha'Atzmaut picnic, yet their raised Israeli flag raised the ire of the Naqba marchers.

The situation quickly deteriorated into a full scale Naqba riot. The police claim that the demonstrators wild incitement seeking provocation caused the riots. However, the rally attendants, including Hadash Chairman MK Mohammad Barakeh said that the riots were caused because the police did allow the rally-goers to properly disperse.

Northern Region District Commander Shimon Koren, Brigadier Zohar Dvir and 3 other police officers injured, as well as a few Arab demonstrators, including Balad’s MK Wasil Taha (pictured above). [YNET]

Just one thought; I'm very thankful that this isn't Israel's "Naqba" and the Arab's "celebration." I doubt they would have let us live long enough to commemorate anything. Israel's Old City of Jerusalem from 1948 to 1967 is a perfect example of what would have happened...

The Purple Parrot came up with a much better name for her Naqba post, "N Na Naq Naqba"...(where every day is Naqba day.)

Naqba Sameach!

Today marks the "Naqba" day!

Those who were upset by the creation of the State of Israel on May 15, 1948, annually commemorate "The Naqba" (The Catastrophe) on May 15th.

Let's examine how an Israeli newspaper, "Yediot Achronot" attempts to cover the same event on their Hebrew and English websites.

I will translate this word for word, so you can accurately compare it to YNET's "translation"

Arab Students commemorate Naqba Day at the Hebrew University

Tens of Arab students arrived at the Hebrew University Mount Scopus campus with the intent of hold a commemoration ceremony of the "Naqba". The students arrived wearing black shirts and kafiyas and screaming, "With Spirit and Blood we will redeem you Palestine"

Opposite them, Jewish students arrived, some from the organization "If you will it", and disrupted the when they tried to hold a moment of silence, by singing songs about the Land of Israel and Jerusalem. Police are at hand to secure both sides.
The way YNET translated the article into English is as follows:

Jerusalem: Jewish students disturb Nakba cemmemoration

Published: 05.15.07, 14:19 / Israel News

Jewish students sang the Israeli national anthem and other nationalistic hymn at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in a deliberate attempt to disrupt a ceremony organized by Arab students to commemorate Nakba day, the day on which the State of Israel was established.

Arab students arrived at a location on the Mount Scopus campus wearing black T-shirts and shouting, "With our blood with our soul we die for you Palestine." (Lilach Shoval)

Questions for the objective reader:

Why is the headline in Hebrew start with the news event about (Israeli) Arab students at the Hebrew University commemorating the birth of the State, while the English edition gets straight to the point: "Jewish students disturb the Naqba Commemoration" Now that certainly puts things into perspective right way! The Jews dared to sing "nationlistic" songs, disturbing a peaceful Arab event.

The English version ends off with (presumably, as a result of the provocation of the Jews), Arab students arrived at a location on the Mount Scopus campus wearing black T-shirts and shouting, "With our blood with our soul we die for you Palestine." While in the Hebrew version, the Arabs started off their demonstration with the screaming...

Why the English edition is so Anti-Israeli, while the Hebrew edition gives a much more Pro-Israel version of the event?

In addition to the "moment of silence" in the Palestinian-occupied cities today, other noteworthy Naqba commemorations included:

9 Palestinians killed in Fatah-Hamas clashes in Gaza

Palestinian-Launched Qassam Rocket falls in Sderot

Israeli lightly injured in Palestinian stone throwing attack

IDF forced to open fire as two Palestinians terrorists approached Gaza fence

Gaza: Lecturer abducted from Islamic University

We wish a Happy Naqba to all the readers and visitors of the Muqata blog, and remind you that tomorrow is Jerusalem Reunification Day, Yom Yerushalayim, as Israel celebrates the 40th year of liberation and reunification of Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the Golan Heights.
