News Updates from Israel - July 19

Midnight at the Muqata...signing off for now. A quiet night to all of Israel.

11:47 PM AP article about the Israel Censor

JERUSALEM (AP) — Here's some news you may never hear about Israel's war against Hezbollah: a missile falls into the sea, a strategic military installation is hit, a Cabinet minister plans to visit the front lines.

All these topics are subject to review by Israel's chief military censor, who has — in her own words — "extraordinary power." She can silence a broadcaster, block information and put journalists in jail.

"I can, for example, publish an order that no material can be published. I can close a newspaper or shut down a station. I can do almost anything," Col. Sima Vaknin said Wednesday.

Israel believes that as a small country in a near constant state of conflict, having a say over what information gets out to the world is vital to its security. Critics say the policy is a slippery slope not fit for a democracy.

10:53 PM Earlier this evening, a fully armed IAF F16i fighter jet developed a technical problem after takeoff, requiring the 2 pilots to eject. The pilots ejected safely and the plane crashed in a uninhabited field. No injuries. (One plane is a heck of alot of Israel Bonds...)

10:50 PM Rockets landing in Nahariya area. No reports of injuries

10:45 PM News from the Front; IDF orders all South Lebanese residents to move north of the Litani River. IDF army radio estimates that this applies to 300,000 to 400,000 people. By causing this migration northwards it prepares the ground for an IDF incursion into South Lebanon, and puts pressure on the Lebanese government in Beirut.

10:43 PM JTA: Israel supporters rally in Washington

About 1,000 supporters of Israel attended a solidarity rally in Washington.

Pro-Israel supporters, including members of the U.S. Congress, braved intense heat Wednesday to express their solidarity with Israel in the current conflict with Hezbollah and call on the U.S. government to support the Jewish state.

Speakers condemned Hezbollah, Iran and Syria and called for the release of three captured Israeli soldiers.

Speakers at the rally included Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Daniel Ayalon; Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.); Maryland Gov. Robert Erlich; Rep. Ben Cardin (D-Md.); Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-N.Y.); and the Rev. John Hagee, national chairman of Christians United for Israel.

The rally was sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington.

6:41 PM More Unity in Israel

Delek Group (TASE: DLEKG) owner Yitzhak Tshuva and his son Elad, 25, have rented dozens of expensive hotel rooms in Jerusalem to house impoverished families who fled the fighting in the north but cannot afford accommodation.

Dozens of families from Kiryat Shmona, Safed and Nahariya are being housed at the Tshuvas' expense at the Inbal hotel (formerly known as Laromme), the Sheraton Olive Tree Hotel, and the Plaza.

The billionaire, from real estate and energy, will also be donating money for air conditioning and televisions to be installed in bomb shelters up north.

The Tshuvas were moved by reports that dozens of families wanted to wait out the war in safer places, but lacked the wherewithal, including because businesses in trouble had not paid their salaries. The family is working with the municipal authorities and the press up north to locate needy families. (hat-tip LK)

6:31 PM Name of one of the killed IDF soldier released for publication: Staff Sergeant Yonatan Hadasi, 21.

6:30 PM Sorry for the delay...internet is slowing down.

5:59 PM: SandMonkey Blogger calls it as it is -- thoughts from an Egyptian blogger comparing the Israeli left to the Arab Left. (Hat-tip: Treppenwitz)

"But then I rememebrd that we- the majority of us anyway- don't want peace with Israel, and are not interested in any real dialogue with them. We weren't then and we are not now. The Entire peace process has always been about getting the land back, not establishing better relations. Even when we do get the land back, it's not enough. People in Egypt lament daily the Camp David treaty that prevents us from fighting. In Gaza they never stopped trying to attack Israel. In Lebanon Hezbollah continued attacking even after the Israeli withdrawel. And the people- the majority of the arab population- support it. Very few of us are really interested in having any lasting Peace or co-existance. I mean, if our left is asking for war, what do you think the rest of the population is thinking?

I think that the Israeli want peace with us because they don't want their lives disrupted. They don't want to have the IDF soldiers fighting in Gaza, rockets coming into their towns from Hamas or having to go to wars against Hezbollah to get their soldiers back. I think they want peace because they want their peace of mind. They view us as if we were a headache. We view them as if they are a cancer.

And this is why there will never really be any peace in the middle-east."

5:35 PM Two dead, not three as previously reported...and 12 lightly wounded in Natzrat.

5:34 PM Solidarity Rally In Phoenix, AZ (hat-tip Raquel from Phoenix)

Beth Joseph Congregation
will be joining shuls across the nation
for a night of united prayer and Torah learning in support of Israel
and our fellow Jews.

Wednesday, July 19th
6:55 PM
Beth Joseph Congregation
Phoenix, Arizona

"Responding to the urgent need of American Jews to do whatever they can in support of Israel and her people at this time, the Orthodox Union and the Rabbinical Council of America, together with the National Council of Young Israel and the Young Israel Council of Rabbis, have announced the convening of a nationwide Night of Prayer and Torah Study this Wednesday, July 19. While many congregations are already adding extra tehillim to their regular services, Jewish tradition places great value in having an entire community raising their voices in unison. With the expectation that several hundred synagogues will participate, many, many thousands of Jews will be united in their prayers at this time. The program's second segment will be Torah study, also a key means of spiritual support, for which study materials on relevant topics such as the mitzvah of pidyon shevuyim, rescuing captives, will be provided to the synagogues by the OU."

Please join us. May the merit of our prayers protect the Jewish people and our land.

5:19 PM Important Message from Jameel @ The Muqata:

Want to Help English Speaking IDF Soldiers?

Now's your chance!
Got a request through a blog friend to help keep English-speaking IDF soldiers in good cheer -- for those presently serving, and for those who just got called up with emergency call-up orders.

Whether you can get some kids in a school to write emails with warm wishes and encouragement, or if you want to write your own funny stories, jokes, or send pictures -- now is your chance to use your creativity to bring a smile to English speaking IDF soldiers.
While the original request is for one specific soldier from his wife -- if the quality is good enough, I could probably have it all printed into a booklet for a bunch of soldiers. Now's your chance - don't just use your creativity for blogging something entertaining -- go ahead and cheer up an IDF soldier!

Please send your submissions to me: muqata@gmail.com and please include in the Subject line, "For IDF Soldiers"

And...send this request on to other like-minded people, so we can create the most entertaining and worthwhile project done in the history of the jblogosphere.

Now's your chance to shine...and do a mitzva at the same time.

(And if this project works out well enough, I'll post the best stuff on a blog of its own)

Thank you all!

Tizku L'Miztvot -- may you merit other good deeds,

Jameel (I'm really getting sick of this name)

Good morning/afternoon Jameel - I am glued to your blog for day 7/8? - and have been using it as a source for internet friends/acquaintances who don't know any better than to listen to what they hear from the Western media.

YAWP! - LOL! Someday you can have a quiz of identifying marks of bloggers and we'll all know who that is!

The yawp definitely brought a smile to these lips.

I heard a great quote last night on FoxNews which I will paraphrase.

Remove Hamas and Hezbolla's weapons and you will have no more violence.
Remove Israel's weapons and you will have no more Israel.

Jameel--I passed along the email campaign info to the communications person at my shul. Hopefully you'll be getting lots of emails from people in Southern California (and my husband and I will be submitting our email later tonight when he gets home from work). :-)

Here in the U.S. they have organizations that help set up soldiers with email "pen pals." Usually the soldiers participating are young and unmarried and could use a little encouragement/support while serving abroad (I think their commanding officer signs them up). Is there a similar program like that in Israel?

Jameel @ The Muqata said...

Blueenclave: I believe it's the Pm of Lebanon

Milhouse: they all have rooves over their heads...but its far from somewhere to call "home". Many of the housing solutions are quite simply...miserable. I'll post more about that later -- family evicted from Gadid in Gush Katif...had their home hit yesterday by a Qassam rocket.

Fern: Don't know of any such penpal program...yet :)
