IDF Sign of the Times

Dear Member/Resident/Visitor/Terrorist:

Due to the game [world cup] -- this gate (shin gimmel) is closed!

Urgent matters will be dealt with during the half-time break.

Thanks!

The Gate (Shin and Gimmel)

Additional explanation: The gate to any IDF base, settlement, kibbutz, moshav, etc is a called by the intials "shin gimmel " -- which stands for "Shaar Gader - שער גדר", the gateway of the fence.

Wherever I am, my blog turns towards Eretz Yisrael

Rachak: Well, I hate the World Cup, so I chalk this up to the patheticness of the game.

WBM & TafkaPP: Yes, a smile/chortle is definitely warranted this morning. (But its less than a guffaw...still looking for something guffaw-evoking)

It's probably better off. The Shin Gimel makes more trouble than it's worth.
Btw - Why are there always 2 people at a Shin Gimel?

In case Comment sense manages to get past the first one.

They should just do what we did in KBY. From 12:00 - 2:30 am, the gate was manned by someone from the Yeshiva. From 2:30 - 5:00 (until the Kibbutz people came back on duty), it was left opened.

Can I correct?

Shin-Gimmel originally stood for Shomer Gdudi, battalion watchguard. Nothing to do with gate. Just sort of slipped into common usage.

YMedad: Actually, Wiki has it listed as Shoter Gedudi.
