I really DONT hate Modiin

While I have posted in the past about problems around the city of Modi'in (and its email list), someone mentioned to me in passing that I must really hate Modi'in.

So, for the record, I really do NOT hate Modi'in.

In fact, here are some exclusive rainbow photos from last Thursday which I took while driving through Modi'in.

And of course, you can't go anywhere in Israel without seeing tens of thousands of street signs named like this.

And usually, those streets are always next to the Begin, Jabotinsky, Herzl, Ben-Gurion and Dayan ones ;P

Let me make this simple for you:

- There are irreligious people living in Modiin. Some of them post to one of the local Anglo email lists.
- The moderator of one of the email lists has specific rules. If you think they are being applied unevenly, posting to your blog is an exercise in futility.
- Normal occurrences (e.g., a principal having no objection to a student putting on t'fillin at school) will never be reported by the press. Abnormal occurrences will be. In fact, the fact that such occurrences are even reported testifies to their abnormality.
- Barely-suppressed gloating over a sefer torah falling down is very strange behavior for a Jew.

You obviously have a chip on your shoulder against some of your fellow Jews. Denying it won't convince anyone otherwise. It's most unbecoming.

Anon,

Actually, it's next to Yosef, Shimon, Levi, Yehudah, Yissachar, Reuven, Ephraim, Menashe, Binyamin, Dan, Naftali, Gad, Asher (No Zevulun, it would be confused with "Emek Zevulun" elsewhere in the city), Rachel Imenu, Sara Imenu, and Rivka Imenu, among others.

Yoni, let's make this real simple for you:
The only one who seems to have a chip on your shoulder is you.

Take a chill pill. Most Israeli communities have religious/secular difficulties to one degree or another. It's part of living here. It's really not necessary to get defensive because Modiin has its share of religious secular difficulties/overzealous Anglo internet list moderators/ unfortunate accidents involving a sefer Torah.

Hi Yoni R.

Lets chill for a second. First of all, I DONT have a chip on my shoulder, and I posted this rainbow post because I thought they were cool photos from within Modiin.

If you think that Christmas caroling by Jews is normal in Israeli Jewish cities...then that's your prerogative.

Posting about a hostel for autistic children in my humble opinion is important for parents of kids like that, EVEN for parents like that in Modiin. I found it ridiculous that the moderator has such a narrow focus on "only" in Modiin, that he rejected that message. If you had kids who were autistic and you lived in Modiin, I'm sure YOU would want to know. But hey, he's not the only wacked out moderator I've encountered since then.

-If you think the tefillin story is not news worthy, then it sounds to me you're hyper defensive, and G-d forbid I would gloat over a sefer torah falling down anywhere.

Re-read the posts. They weren't all posted the same week...but spread out over a long time.

And by the way -- they were sent to me to be posted by Modiin residents!

But that's a different story.

Seriously, I have some great friends in Modiin, I don't hate the city, and this was more of a jokish posting. Sorry you took it seriously.

Jameel: See? Now you're just like Jim Jones. You tell a joke that doesn't go over well, and you have to apologize for it.

First of all, Abbi and Jameel have to decide between themselves if I should "take a chill pill" or just "chill".

Jameel,

I'm sorry if you thought I was getting defensive. (OK, I'm not sorry per se, but it wasn't my intention.) I write emphatically as part of my job, so it's sometimes hard to turn off (especially when I'm sitting at work).

I don't think that Christmas caroling is an appropriate activity for Jews anywhere (although I do enjoy listening to Maoz Tzur when being harmonized by "'Tis the Season" - try it with a friend; it's beautiful). But there are kooks in every town.

I also get frustrated by the moderator's rules. However, if you read them, he specifically says that things which would be approprate for a broader list (such as Tachlis, if it even still exists) are not relevant for his. I don't agree with it, but I also don't put in the time moderating the list.

I didn't say the t'fillin story is not news worthy. I said that the fact the it made it to the news strongly indicates that it is not a normal thing, i.e., not indicative of the way things normally go; an isolated incident.

The only reason I took it seriously is because I've seen some of your other posts, and I had gotten the impression that you have a thing against Modiin.

...this was more of a jokish posting...

Kind of like telling a joke about a Jew selling a tie to a thirsty Taliban in the desert.... :-)

Abbi,

I completely agree with you. That's along the lines of what I was pointing out to Jameel.

Yoni: So like I wrote at the top of my post -- I'm *really* have nothing against Modiin!

re; (although I do enjoy listening to Maoz Tzur when being harmonized by "'Tis the Season" - try it with a friend; it's beautiful).

Much to the consternation of my wife, I do that routinely every year :-)

Thanks for the great photos, just round the corner from my house (As well as Yoni's).

To the best of my knowledge, the Carol story was a hoax, someone posted it on the Modi'in list to get a response (which he got), I don;t believe that the caroling ever happened or was ever really planned.

With best wishes for a Merry Lag B'Omer and to all a good night

Street names: apart from all the Nahal this and that which can now be found in all of the newer towns

Indeed, the initial posting about the Christmas carols was a hoax. Time to time there are postings on this list whose intention is clearly just to get a rise out of people. It's actually quite funny. I'd be more than happy to share them with you as they come up. And no, they are not posted by me.

However, I agree with you regarding the overzealous moderators. That post about the hostel for autistic children should have been approved.
