The Peres Paradox

If Shimon Peres were to enter the contest to determine the "World's Biggest Loser", would he win? Now that's a tough call. He's lost every possible election he's tried at win in the past 20 years...one after the other. Some of the easy ones that come to mind:

1991 Peres vs Rabin (Labor party chairmanship)
1996 Peres vs Bibi (Prime minister of Israel)
2000 Peres vs Katzav (Presidency of Israel)
2005 Peres vs Peretz (Labor party chairmanship)

In fact, the only time he ever managed to make it to the Prime Minister's position in Israel, is succeeding Rabin, after Rabin's murder. (Pretty lame, don't you think?)

The world loves him, yet for some reason, he's Israel's biggest loser.

Famous quotes from Peres:

"Why don't you go back to where you came from?"
(Peres yelled this at a Women in Green anti-Olso demonstrator in 1995. She was a concentration camp survivor. )

"What, I'm a loser?"
(Shimon Peres asks the Labor Party central committee, and they yelled back a resounding "YES!" )

"I think violence is the intervention of the past in the attempt to change the future."
(Speech at the Peres Center for Middle East Peace and Economic Cooperation, April 2001)

"Instead of dwelling in the history of the past, we have to look to the history of the future."
(Speech to American Jewish Committee, May 3, 2001)

Let's be fair -- do you know any other figure in Israeli (or world, for that matter) politics, who can truly insprire us to keep trying, and trying, and trying, no matter how many times we may stumble? Honestly, the only thing I've ever seen that can even compare to Peres is this

You missed a few losses. he lost to Rabin in 74 to head the Labor party, he lost twice to Menachem begin (77 and 81), in 88 he lost to Shamir.

He was Prime Minister in rotation with Shamir sometime in the 1980s.

Ah yes...you are correct. I remember in 86 the bus ads "There will be a rotation", vs. "There won't be a rotation". It drove everyone crazy trying to figure out who was putting out the ads.

In the end, it was just an advertising company showing how clever they could be.

Elections aren't everything.

The one that gets me is the "We have to look to the history of the future."

That really doesn't make any sense if you think about the statement.

Little Wolf: Of course it doesn't make any sense! Check out the link..its full of Dan Qualyesque type statements which are shocking to be heard from a Nobel Peace Prize Winner.

Then again, the Oslo Accords made no sense either.

Here is a web site that claims to have caused Peres to lose the primary election to Amir Peretz
www.shimonperes.net/davidrutstein.htm . The dude's name is David Rutstein, the Rabin murder guy, and he is after Peres big time. This stuff probably explains the post Rabin murder losses.
