There can't possibly be two billion idiots watching the World Cup...can there?

As I wrote yesterday (World Cup, Who Cares), "The Mondial" is a freaking waste of time. Someone wrote to me yesterday -- "Two billion people can't possibly be wrong"

Guess what? They are.

Wherever I am, my blog turns towards Eretz Yisrael

Given the origins of athletic competition in Greco-Roman religion, should Jews pay attention to any "sport"?

In the interests of full disclosure: remember the kid who was picked dead last to make up the team in playground games? I'm not him. I'm the one who was left standing around after they picked him.

the statistics going around: 1/6 aussies called in sick to work today, the morning after a late night watching the soccer.

LOL. Here in the USA we prefer our exciting baseball games. Strike, foul, foul, ball, ball, strike. Woohoo!
Thanks for the link to Neharot. I don't need a translation (and yes I do have American guilt about not making Aliya, thanks for pointing it out Trep ;) ). I am not sure they will still be doing trips in July but I look forward to reading about your adventures. Any other bright spots in the Golan/Gallil w/o kids?

Why are you so insecure about the World Cup that you feel the need to keep posting about not liking it?

Sim: Baseball - been there, done that. *yawn*

Drop me an email and I'll send you more info about stuff to do.

Jeffrey: Well, we do have the "Maccabiya" where your question gets asked every few years. Israel's big on sports, but even bigger on spectator ones (blah).

Sarah: Exactly - pathetic. Could be an Onion headline; "Mondial Finishes -- Global Productivity Soars 800%"

DCDI: Ah....the insecurity.

Let's see...as I relax back into the couch. It probably all started way back in 1983. I was all excited about the upcoming World Cup. I went out and purchased pennants, soccer balls, posters of my favorite players...everything was set.

However, my older brother's girlfriend started laughing at me saying that soccer was stupid and for wimps. She said ice-hockey was so much more interesting.

Since then, I have these insecure feelings about the World Cup...and I could never watch a game without feeling insecure. It took years of therapy, but I was told that if I expressed my anger towards the rest of the world through my blog, I could be cured...and voila!

Does that work for you? I'll be back bashing it again tomorrow

;-)

In 1983 - the next World Cup was some three years away.

DCDL: I could have gotten the year wrong.

In any event I just mentioned this to my sister, and she was shocked I had forgotten about a previous incident.

My dad didn't attend my kingdergarten graduation ceremony because he was too busy watching the World Cup. I guess I buried that latent memory far into the recesses of my mind.

Thanks for bringing it up.

Don't think they let you graduate kindergarten if you can't spell the word.

Jameel;
HooYa that was so good I sent it to Hubby(who is probably too busy watching Siberia vs Moldovia to see it)
Your brothers girlfiend is right- Hockey is the sport of real men; and vampires- lots of blood flying about.

Simpsons eh?

Finally, something worthwhile on this blog. :)

That was hysterical! Yep, low scoring games and ties, what a great sport! LOL

I think Krusty's remark said it all :-)

You know what's funny? Americans aren't into soccer (though I did kind of like the MISL- remember that?) but I read that more kids there play soccer than Little League baseball. How did that happen?

It's just a game, like the World Series, right?

Muse- you want to know what it is- check out my post.

The Simpsons? Woohoo!

I explained to my kids that mondale was the guy who lost to Reagan, and anything that is boring and can't hack it in the US is exciting to the rest of the world.

Funny clip, but I have to admit that the guys playing soccer are better looking than the football players were back in America...especially since you couldn't see them at all because of the ton of protective clothing. And baseball, the most boring of all sports to watch...
