Unfortunately you can probably see the same thing in Tel Aviv.

that's an awesome picture.
I've never seen a big pork sign in Tel Aviv.
Though for Rosh Hashana there were some New Year's eve parties.

near the tachana mercazit in Tel Aviv there's a big store that says they're the number on retailer of pork in Israel.
Where did you find this picture?!?!?

You can see signs like this in Israel, but they don't have a big "Happy Passover" greeting and Magen David next to it.

Got it by email this AM from a friend.

to be clear.. after further clarification using the photoshop zoom tool, it was determined (by a trained dutch scientist) that the photo is NOT a fake.

Last year I saw a newspaper ad from a local grocery that had the big Happy Passover sign right above the "SALE...Rye bread!" sign. too funny!

How do you know that the pork isn't kosher?? And even if not I am sure it's Kosher for Pesach it's got no Chametz in It.

Anyways for that price maybe I will buy me some, it sounds like a good deal - Where is this store??

Jameel, I wanted to know if you and some other J-Bloggers would be interested in a campaign. There is a certain Palestinian blog that is attempting to feed the world lies, propoganda, and hate to a very willing audience. At this time, only me, the husband, and a few other people are standing up for the Jews and Israel. We are being attacked, being called Nazis, and the usual names. But, here's the rub. The blog belongs to a Palestininan, who happens to also be a reporter, and her hatred is more subtle. She's never direct in her attacks and always loves to beat around the bush when she asks people like us to back off from commenting. But, her supporters or "followers" are very up front and vicious in their belief of these lies. They don't know the facts and actually swallow and believe every accusation that is thrown at the Jews by the Palestininians. I'm trying to counter-attack with facts. It's actually resulted in a few genuinely interested people asking to know more information and really want to get the facts and interact in positive dialogue. I believe that it is our duty to get the truth out. I was just wondering if you were interested were something of a J-Blogger "blitzkrieg". Email me or something if you're interested.

You don't see signs like that in my neighborhood.

I'm not surprised, not any more than I was from seeing a huge Menorah in a non kosher restaurant, not any more than seeing a chicken that wasn't slaughtered by a shochet with Happy passover next to it.(it's just as treif)

Jameel @ The Muqata said...

Pragmat: What bothers more than that, is that I remember a milchiks restaurant ad in Teaneck, 10 years ago during the summer:

Make this the BEST 9 Days, ever!

The 9 days got you down? Can't have any meat?

We have a special offer this week at our milchik's establishment...

rockofgalilee said...

9 Days specials are standard in Jewish grocery stores in the US. There are always ice cream sales.

very funny.

oy -

I'm pretty sure the pork contains kitniyos... so unless you're sephardic...

sadly enough, i know too many jews who wouldn't find anything wrong with this.
but i love the irony.

Hysterical! I just posted my own take on this, with a tip to you and to one other blog where I saw it.

Just to note, I don't see how this is "sad" at all, since I can't imagine that the store actually intended to market pork as one of their Passover specials. They probably just put a "Happy Passover" logo on all their posters/ads this time of year, and this one was just an amusingly inappropriate one that nobody caught.

Jameel @ The Muqata said...

Elie - Did I write anywhere that this was sad?

I didn't write any caption at all!

Elie said...

Didn't mean to imply you did - but a few of the commentors above used that word or otherwise implied that they thought this ad was intentional. And it certainly would be very sad if people were really shopping for pork specially for Passover. But I don't think that was the metzius here.

That's hysterical and probably very typical. That should be sent to Jay Leno, for his Headlines in the News bit.

Pragmatician said...

Make this the BEST 9 Days, ever!

Sure kills away the spirit of the 9 days, but I must admit it's clever marketing!

bec said...

elie,
i think people find that it's "sad" since the establishment is pretty clueless on this. it was probably an oversight on their part, true, but as someone who has been invited too many times for pizza and obviously not-kosher for pesach meals by jews who either didn't know much about pesach or chose not to keep anything, i find it to be a sad illustration of a larger issue.
